Sorry Isaac, I have to ask. Not being American, I don't really have a frame of reference I guess, but is this a real test you are doing?

This confusion over geography is very..... confusing.

I didn't want to give it away in the title and was hoping to get a few answers before I let people know the reason behind this poll. Lately I've been extremely fascinated with the "Mandela effect" and simply wanted to see where people remember the statue of liberty being located.

Guess I still don't really understand, thought maybe this was for a study you were conducting. Frankly I think the whole Mandela effect you mentioned is a load of bunk, mostly perpetrated and passed on by the internet. Yes, people's memories can be flawed, that is hardly a breakthrough, nor is someone's insistence that they are 100% absolutely right about ______. And a lot of it is just ignorance (i.e. lack of knowledge) on the subject matter; which is fair enough, but again, doesn't constitute a universal condition. I think naming it after Mandela, which really has nothing to do with anything, is a bit bizarre too.

Sorry if this sounds harsh - not the intent - not trying to sound hypercritical of you or the question, just the researcher in me, and my tendency to evaluate critical thinking. :)

Guess we will see what this poll shows.

Many people clearly remember it being on Ellis Island and some even recall entering the torch portion of the statue but that isn't possible because it's been closed off for the past 100 years.

It's actually called the Mandela effect because a lot of people remember Nelson Mandela's death being in the 80's. They even recall seeing his funeral broadcasted on the television.

Right, I get that, but what I mean it has nothing to with the man himself (and as such would normally be applied by naming convention). You could just as easily call it the Pikachu effect/the Statue of Liberty effect/the Luke-Vader effect/whatever, but none of those things help to define the condition.

As for random people recalling something that average persons know did not occur, see above, I dunno. People think the moon landing was a Kubrickian fantasy. Others claim aliens built the pyramids. Maybe lizard people are running the world? Who am I to disagree??

Would James Earl Jones qualify as a random person that rrcalls something that did not occur? I mean he was the voice of Darth Vader after all..

See, that case I put entirely at the hands of the media. It is only the repetition of the phrase from secondhand sources that people will then associate with it - especially those who have never seen the film. And as for James Earl Jones himself, he is fallible as much as anyone, so he could of course pick it up from other people saying it, asking him to say it, etc. There is no way I would expect a man or woman to remember a line exactly from one piece that they performed 30 years ago, that's pretty silly. And messing up one word in entire phrase, where the gist of it is exactly the same, that is pretty forgivable, and not relatable at all to misclaiming falsehoods as truths.

You have a good point there, when he says that he read the dialogue there's a piece of paper and it only shows "I am your father" in handwriting. The word "Luke" or "No" are nowhere to be seen so we just go by what he says he read from the dialogue.

My first thought was ellis island. Feels like info from a famous movie or something.

I know the Bernstein bear topic was the hit one last year. Trippy stuff some of it.

I thought this had something to do with that fat fuck Christie and the NJ government shutdown. Because the media reported this morning that the shutdown is causing beach closings and the Statue of Liberty is closed. I did a double take when they said that because I know the Statue of Liberty is in NY and run by the US Parks service not NJ. I mean maybe the ferry from NJ to it is closed not the park itself.

So I thought this poll was related to media stupidity.

Yes, lots of people remember it being on Ellis Island and have even taken pictures in front of it while on the island. Those pictures they took are now missing the statue like it just disappeared from the shot. Definitely trippy!

If anything this "Mandela Effect" (FFS internet ) is a symptom of the human mind's fallibility, predisposition for manipulation & boundless stupidity. Not exactly news or mysterious. But yeah, quantum mechanics because Gwyneth Paltrow's severed head!!!1!!

Everybody knows that the Statue of Liberty is no longer on Liberty Island ever since David Coperfield made it vanish back in 1983. This is a trick question. Fake news

I Hear what you're saying, I was a skeptic at first too but then did some research and found some compelling evidence that was hard to deny. It's easy to brush something off that doesn't comply with your beliefs but apparently challenging our minds isn't for everyone. Maybe I'm a bit more open minded or simply just crazy but I'd like to think otherwise.
Thanks for your input either way it was extremely useful. :|

    Funny guy.
But seriously, according to our reality it's always been on Liberty Island.

I could fill a page just with the claims of misremembered Star Wars alone. You remember that Biggs scene? Yeah, well some people do. And then there was 'A New Hope' in the opening crawl. The list goes on....

Not to mention GL's incessant fiddling with the OT sure didn't help matters.
