So I have a handful of various cassettes just sitting around because I've never really had a proper cassette player or sound system to play them on. This was the only thread I could think of to ask. Can you guys recommend a decent cassette player to me? Painting/casting toys while listening to a tape is almost an out of body experience.

I have an old vintage Onkyo TA2000 that is still working wonderfully after so, so many years. I would peruse Craigslist for anything from Onkyo, Pioneer, Marantz and the ilk. They all produced very solid machines that still provide after so many years. Assuming you aren't looking for a boombox, etc. If that's the case I have no opinion on the mater.

i'm on an exmortus fix at the moment.
these guys would have been my high-school-self's wet dream.
a perfect mix of power (think stratovarius, symphony x) and thrash.
great album when you just want some awesome shredding.
lots of lyrics about battles and typical power metal stuff,
but they have a couple lovecraft inspired tunes (from the abyss, crawling chaos)!

    little sidebar...
growing up in the east l.a. area in the late 90's early 00's, power metal was huge for anyone that listened to metal.
kinda weird thinking about a bunch of us hispanic kids rocking out to a bunch of scandinavians singing about vikings and shit,
but it's just one of those things, like us and morrissey haha.
so it's really cool to see these dudes come out of that same area/scene!

No argument here. I also think Unnatural Selection is a damn fine thrash album. Exmortus shreds....fact. Ride Forth was a favorite of mine last year, looking forward to hearing some new material from those guys.

When it comes to modern thrash, these crazy fuckers simply do not get enough attention, and its a damn shame !

    lich king are pretty awesome!

psychosomatic is the purest definition of modern thrash imo, although they've been around since the late 80's lol

^ hey, I listened to that album a couple of times this week as well ! The excerpt in the newest issue of Decibel from the book on Noise Records had a lot to do with my revisiting of this classic.

Also been on a Savatage kick lately....

    New GWAR album incoming!

Apparently if anyone here is attending Warped Tour this summer, you can pre-order the album via GWAR's merch tent.

    can't freakin wait.

Can't get enough Droid lately. From Ontario, Canada with a good sci-fi prog thrash vibe, reminding me of DBC and Voivod ( is it possible to be from Canada and not be influenced by the mighty Vods? )

    Plus this on repeat...

some technical thrash from the legendary watchtower

    bonus!
this reminded me of a couple of straight up technical metal bands i used to listen to in high school!

    spiral architect

power of omens. this was my favorite band in high school. alex arellano, the drummer, was/is fucking amazing. like nothing i had heard before or since. it's seriously like drums falling down the stairs, but amazing lol. it's hard to believe that it's one person hitting all those cymbals, toms and snare

This gem popped up on my Pandora station today on the ride home from work. Needless to say my cruising speed increased by about 10mph and I wanted to charge into battle on a giant wolf and spear everyone to death. It was a good time.

I can't see Dio now without thinking of an interview i read once, which i think was in Vice magazine, the interviewer decided to get on Ronnie's nerves on purpose (i cant remember the reason). There were a few stipulations for the interview, one of which was not to ask him about Black Sabbath. So, amongst other things the interviewer kept asking about the Sabs and also kept calling him 'Rodney' on purpose. I think he also made reference to his short height a few times as well . . .

'Rodney' James Dio, haha. The interviewer got thrown out the room by one of Dio's body guards as i recall.

^ I met RJD as a teen, real cool dude. A few friends and I went to a radio station where they were taping an interview with him. I remember it being very late at night/early in the morning here in San Diego after a concert, and he took the time to sign everybody's shit and take pics with fans. I do recall being blown away by how small of a man he was...how could such a massive voice come from such a little guy ?!?
