I'll keep my eye out bunny. Yeah I never got that whole never wash your jeans thing. Although I personally think its gross to say not wash your jeans for 6 months or so, scientifically a study was done and the jeans themselves were no more bacteria filled than if someone hasd not washed them for a month. Guess its all relative. Being a neat-freak germaphobe though I think a month is all I could push lol.
Is there a way to not blow out the crotch? I go through multiple jeans a year. Btw: The whole "BUT YOU CAN'T WASH THEM FOR A YEAR!!!" thing is total bullshit. Doing so will only result in your precious denim wearing down MUCH quicker because it's softened by all the grime rubbing off you. Seeing a year-old, $200+ destroyed pair of jeans with crotch blow-out that the owner considers "well-worn in" and proudly posts on the Internet never fails to crack me up.[/QUOTE]
Find a friend with a sewing machine/get one yourself and patch 'em up good (on the inside) before they actually blow out!
I usually patch them as soon as they start to tear. I was thinking of taking all my jeans to a tailor and having patches put in after I buy them. Maybe it will wear with the denim.
@uh oh I've also been thinking about (p)re-inforcing my next pair; definitely before they start to tear! The Big John Rare comes in a bag made of the very same denim and canvas as the DUNGAREES (there, I typed it), although patching unworn 15.5oz pants with the same, brandnew 15.5oz denim might be a bit drastic (yes, I realize there are crazy people out there that actually wear 32oz denim, and most likely without ever washing it)...
I have no idea about denim weight and all that shit. I pretty much only wear Levi's 510's and wash them often. I think denim colorwashes get better over time with washing. A few pairs I own are like 10 years old and have been through heavy BMX abuse, but I've never blown out a crotch. What the hell are you guys doing?? The one pair even had the leather tag disintegrate right off (too much washing on those haha).
Never had it until I started wearing pants that fit more snugly, and I still wear 'em a size large instead of nuthugger "Oh they'll stretch a bit"-style. It's all about the cut. Slim tapered definitely IS NOT ideal for biking; more room in the thighs & crotch->MUCH less abrasion & wear.
@bunnyboy 510's actually are super slim. For me it's the best for biking really, keeps from getting caught in the chain and on other things. maybe levis are just strong in that area.
@evom I was riding a broken, abrasive saddle, so come to think of it that might have also been a contributing factor... Duh. New saddle now, I'll report back in a year. I don't think you wear these in, they look like THEY would wear YOU down. "Yeah, the skin between my thighs and calfs is permanently creased now. It's scar tissue, actually."
haha, oh! my seats pretty low, so pedaling while sitting isn't really doable. Only ever sit when im coasting or resting.
I reckon you just posted that for shits & giggles, because I surely won't spray my fine Japanese denim with some expensive Australian chem shit that's probably just glorified Febreze. Ironically, they even link to that Heddel's article which clearly says you should wash your jeans, because
I still only wear Acne Max Cash these days. Cannot find any other pair of black jeans with the same fit.
Thanks for the read Roger! I had no idea this forum had a denim thread. Shows how much I pay attention. I’ve been fading a few things over the years, mainly a pair of Iron Heart 555’s and a type ii. Those are the furthest along. I’ll post pics sometime.
Yeah, definitely an interesting read. It really does a nice, succinct job of explaining Japanese quality through Confucianism. I bought a pair of Samurai jeans when I was in Osaka several years ago. They are unlike any American made jeans I've ever had - very hard-wearing, and only now beginning to fade on the tops of the thighs. I think part of it is that they're a heavier weight denim, so I rarely wear them in summer. But I feel like they'll probably last the rest of my life, regardless of how much I wear them. I had them hemmed at Self Edge and the guys there were pretty stoked to see a pair of Samurai - apparently they can't carry the brand, and it sounded like nobody in the US can import them, due to Levis copyright infringement or something. I'm not sure about the truth of that, but found it interesting.
