In the case of Spongebob, I was thinking the same thing. Yes, he's a popular character and a long time street art favorite with many fans so using his likeness can equal $, but he did seem to start popping up everywhere around then. Maybe it's because those who watched him as children were becoming teenagers and starting to buy their own clothes in 2013, perhaps what you said @infiniteneeya, or some other Spongebob milestone, anniversary, etc, but yeah, I couldn't care less about Mishka but they weren't alone in it. Although it's not for me, the coolest pieces from the spongebob revival that I know of are the Secret Base X-ray toys.

For the last 5 years Nickelodeon reached out across the entire world to push Spongebob in every way they possibly could. It wasn't about artists looking at the property, it was the property seeking out artists. I think it's pretty cool.

I love Spongebob so the push to put out a bunch of pieces from a bunch of companies was amazing for me, same for Simpsons which is also a big love. Moschino slayed me with their Spongebob collection! Took me forever to track down all the pieces I wanted though, since it was all fairly pricey when it released.

 

This niggaz brand still has half the followers of the one me and my ex started on insta and made that shit about me yo no wonder he was workin.
