Yes, we do mind, Grace! I think everyone's excitement has nailed my feelings already, but wow, this guy is pretty amazing. Even more happy to see him than Dustman, to be honest. As much as I would love to see OMB take on some of the [many] as-yet unexplored licenses, there is still a lot to tap from the wonderful well of Spectreman, so this Bakular is very welcome. I really like his take. It is quite different in its own right, and retains all of that Oohashi-san charm and whimsy. He really has such skill with imbuing these pieces of plastic with character and personality. Hard to say (on my monitor at least) whether the base is white or a light pink. but the paint colours are wonderful. This is just plain good toys, folks. Now to just sort out the international pipeline!
Fresh from the Ohashisan Studio! "Later this month" .... hubba hubba! Not as "insecty" as Marmit's Parababies, so it's less creepy with more cuteness. I'm glad the tail is painted p.s. Ok, group effort.... SQUINT and think... Bell Pepper Zunou monster!!!!
how he pulls off some of his brushwork details, ill never know.. Looks great. Cant wait to find out what else will be released with him.
Oh man those lovely gold teeth, green and black highlights, wing detail, all on milky white vinyl. I haven't been this excited for a Butanohana release since Zazahn! Its doubly so with the whale reissue! Translated the page to english and the bottom says "Also Spectreman will be sold in the near future". I hope so I missed Spectreman's initial release and flippers want ridiculous money for him.
It's amazing to think he hand paints in all the detail. The teeth alone would drive me bonkers! I wonder if the whale is going to be cast in a new mold?
GAMAKUJIRAAAA!! One of the few left on my list but sadly I don't have the cash right now for toys. Congrats to other Buta fans who can finally score one of these elusive little gems. At least now there are more out there so hopefully I can grab one down the line.
I sure appreciate the spontaneity and the technical mastery you need for a good airbrush paint. The crude application are the charm of sofubi. But concerning the hand paint applied with brushes, I am not more impressed than that. Having painted a lot of 25mm RPG miniatures, I cant see why this is impressive. Please enlighten me if I am missing something... I hope the Spectreman release will be a variation !
I don't know anything about painting, but guessing maybe hand painting a run of 100 toys is a bit different than your referenced hobby painting experience....Buta's runs are larger than a lot of other indie-type toy makers as far as I know. Just taking a guess, maybe someone else can chime in on airbrush vs hand painting. Interesting topic IMHO.
Wonderful to see the new group. Those lagoon green and aqua colors are so nice. I just noticed that Bakulars wrinkled tummy are a second pair of teeny arms!
Excited about this batch as well! Certainly most excited about the Gamakazam and Gamerot reissues. Both are great colorways for two of his most sought after sculpts. I am glad I get another shot at those two after foolishly passing them by several years ago.
Are we talking about technique or about patience and dedication ? Painting a whole run needs indeed a lot of patience. And it can be tedious, I understand that. But if he doesn't have patience, I guess a painter should try another job... But technically speaking, I don't find painting teeth that hard. It's like the amazing pupils of the Nags . That made me laugh hard. The spontaneity needed for a neat and subtle airbrush painting is something else to my opinion. I already tried and you need really good equipment and really know what you're doing (and you've got to have taste ). But of course Bakura has 4 arms. That was the choice of Masudaya to put only one pair. We are now familiar with this shape and the additional arms on the torso are a nice addition. It lightens the overall appearance. If you compare the Masudaya & Awesome Toy versions, you really see how 2 more arms really complicates the sculpt. The blue eye is also a nice tribute to the Masudaya one. I like that.
^^^Oh yes, I did know he has four arms, but I thought Mr. Ohashisan's only had two at first glance . I have the CCP versions (with and without parasite) and the Marmit parababies. No Masudaya or Awesome Toy versions yet. I'm hoping Mr. O will follow-up with a parasite version so I can have matched sets! Gamerot looks much nicer as v.2, the colors are nice and bright. I think painting hundreds of teeth would be very tedious. Love the transition of the aqua into green on the legs. That whale is marvelous.
@plasticXO teeth aren't very hard you're right, if they are small. I was referring to parts like the eye on Bakular.. that is pretty tough to do cleanly. vinyl paint dries super fast and gets weird and sticky as it does. so he had to be quick while being accurate and confident for something like that.
I like the whole line-up, my favorite is probably Namegon. So kawaii. But great to see a regular release with regular sized guys in this so far micro-heavy year.
Could be one of the Ragons --- Zarab was born of creative suit recycling, as so many beautiful beasties were.
Yaaaaas. Good stuff. Needs a bomb omake. Let's see if OMB can beat Bear Model's rendition, which is as close to perfection with Ragon as I've seen. The giant OG Bullmark is a close close second. If anyone can do it, it's Buta. EDIT: needs a baby Ragon omake instead of a bomb. That would be the bee's knees.
I'd like to see him give the ol' Gary treatment - a beautiful rendition of the little lady from Ultra Q, and an entirely different sculpt of Ultraman's Big Boy with Bomb! Might be odd to hear me say, but I'd be surprised if OMB could eclipse the beautiful BM rendition. The Bear folk really outdid themselves with that Ragon II. Put another way: what Herr Bev sed!
