This could go in any American movie thread on here really, but this one seems to be the most active. It's also no secret that many modern PG-13 horror movies are undone by final edits to make them more kid / family friendly. PG-13 no longer represents what it was created for; it's "supposed to be pushing the envelope of PG, Not pulling R backwards." Has anyone noticed that they're now doing similar things to R movies? I was surprised to see that the Gallows was rated R! R?! If the Gallows was an R in the 80s, you know it would've been a hell of a lot more fun with a lot more of the "good stuff". You might even recommend it along with, some that come to mind are Night of the Demons, Dead Dudes in the House, and Hell Night. It doesn't have to be a great film to be fun, but you can't cut the balls off of a horse if it's supposed to be a stud horse . The studios are more concerned about filling the seats more than they are with what they make. That's old news and I'm getting off topic. Enjoy the video :D

Time for another list, kind of gotten backed up again, so this WON'T be short. And this ain't even all of 'em.

Strange Invaders: Weird '80s alien invasion movie with a really strange cast. Pretty boring overall, but some interesting old-school effects. Technically Ozploitation though filmed in the US. Most of the cast and crew were also involved in Strange Behavior, which I really want to see!

Hatchet: Had heard that this was a glorious return to the slashers of the '80s! Apart from some pretty awesome gore the story is utterly forgettable. I did like seeing "Kenny" from the Cosby Show in a horror flick, though.

The Forest (1982): Ho boy. This movie is a stinker! I started it sometime last year and finally muscled through it recently. This is one of THREE boring cannibal movies I watched within the last month. Boring cannibal movies! What the heck!?! This is worth a watch if you like WTF movies.

Ghosthouse and Witchery: Two Italian movies from 1988, by different directors, and wholly unrelated, other than one actor that's in both, that were distributed as sequels to The Evil Dead franchise. Ghosthouse is the better of the two, IMO, with some really good gore, really bad acting, and lines like, "I'm starving, I'm gonna get some chili." And a character credited as Lieu Tenant. Get it? The beginning is crazy, with really cool effects like light bulbs that expand and then explode! Filmed in the same house as The House by the Cemetery!! Also has an evil clown doll that is an obvious rip off of the one in Poltergeist. WItchery has Linda Blair, The Hoff, and one of the worst child actors ever. Love his heavy Maine accent though! Takes a while but it gets pretty good.

The Burning: Been wanting to see this for ages, and it finally ended up OnDemand. Anyway, other than the infamous raft scene this is a pretty slow and dragged out Summer Camp flick. It was cool to see kids of all ages (not just counselors) and of course Jason Alexander, Holly Hunter and Fisher Stevens in early (first?) roles.

Motel Hell: The commercial for this one creeped me out as a kid. Took me forever to get to it because I knew it was Horror/Comedy which is not my fave sub-genre. Honestly, I think they claim it's a Black Comedy because it simply misses the mark as a scary horror movie. Why this one has a cult following is beyond me. It's simply boring, plus it riffs heavily off of TCM. This is boring cannibal movie numero dos.

Frightmare (1974): Third boring cannibal movie. Another one that I started and stopped sometime last year. Finished it off and all I can say is, yeah, I finally watched it. Another Pete Walker flick is on my watched list, but I'll save that for another day. It's better, but still not great. I have a feeling this guy's movies sound better on paper than they actually play out, but we'll see.

Are there Pete Walker films that aren't a total snooze? I've had trouble getting through every single one that I've tried. Now if I get the urge for British sleaze of a certain era, I just run through Norman J. Warren's catalog again. Never lets me down.

Well done video essay, JP. Thanks for sharing.

    EDIT: Done vs. down. Dummy.

Well, I need to watch a few more to answer, but at this point it seems so. I've got a bunch of NJW on my watch lists, so I need to hunker down with them this Fall.

I bought the coffin shaped box set a long time ago but never watched any . . .

I finally got round to watching 'Prey' and liked it. It was weirder than i was expecting.
Its described as 'claustrophobic', which i would agree with.

What would you recommend i watch next?
    Satan's Slave, Terror or Inseminoid?

@The Moog - Prey is a long-time favorite of mine. $3 random grab from a bin of used VHS back in '99. Minds were blown that night.

Just run 'em in order, man. The '70s ones, Satan's Slave and Terror, aren't as weirdly perfect as Prey, but plenty enjoyable for what they are. You should catch the influences pretty quick. Inseminoid is deeply fucked. I defy you to find a more warped and engaging Alien rip. A shining bit of trash.

EDIT: The secret star of Terror and Prey is Ivor Slaney,

Some fun stuff I've viddied with me glazzies of late:

So bad it's good dept: New Year's Evil. Pretty tepid 80s slasher, where you see who the killer is the whole time. Who he is is the big surprise. Sort of. Really bad acting from Pinky Tuscadero and everyone else involved.

Wacky wackiness and goings on: Messiah of Evil, where has this film been all my life? An inspired mess. Sample line: "You're not supposed to eat the fuzz." Elisha Cook, Jr. has some great lines. Kinda like Carnival of Souls. X-Ray (aka Hospital Massacre) with Barbi Benton(!), and in a flashback, two 80s staples: Billy Jacoby and Eliabeth Hoy, both fresh off of Bloody Birthday! Barbi ends up at the worst hospital ever! Both of these were full frame transfers, which was somewhat apropos. Schizo, more Pete Walker. This one's pretty fun, but overlong. Stars Peter Sellars' last wife, who ended up being a mess of a person, and dying young. Grapes of Death, Jean Rollin zombie(?) flick. This is an example of super cheap effects being really effective. The oozing, pussy faces had me gagging a couple times, and that's a rarity. Plus, Brigitte Lahaie!! The Final Terror, great cast, but a little slow with only one or two kills (and a tagged on beginning to add a couple more). Almost everyone in this film went on to have a pretty long, successful career, so the acting is above par for this sort of thing.

All the others, not really worth talkin' 'bout: Sinister 2 (hey, I gotta watch something while I work), Spellbinder (snooze, although young Kelly Preston!), Jugface (meh), Kristy (ok), Applesauce (not horror, but there are body parts; pretty fun actually), Body (first half good, then derivative shit), I Spit On Your Grave 3 (nasty, nasty!).

Almost forgot, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. If you have Hulu, watch this! Really fun Czech fairy-tale/horror flick from 1970/71. Arty horror can be a big bore, but this is pretty engaging all the way through.

@Lttr Prssd - I think italics and boldface is indeed the way to go with titles. Good call! Haven't been taking in much new horror of late, so I'll just parrot back about some of your recent mentions again:

Messiah of Evil rules! It's all the more delightful when you learn the it exists due to the efforts of a rather prolific husband and wife team. Look 'em up for funsies. My old copy of the film came packaged with a blandish little Italian weirdie called Devil's Nightmare.

Schizo is the Walker flick that came closest to winning my approval, but, as you say, it could have done with some serious trimming.

Grapes of Death is an enjoyable watch. Not the first Lahaie picture I'd think about popping in, but certainly the safest! ;)

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is one of my very favorite things. I wish that I could remember the name of the film that I always used to show it to people with, stoopit brain, but it does pair nicely with another staple of the Czech New Wave, Daisies. Also Huluable. Morgiana's pretty cool, too, if you happen top have some more Czech artfart in you. Gothic horror with a dash of proto-Evil Dead in it.

Yeah, I knew that about MoE. There was some really fantastic dialogue in it, so you can see the kernels of the good (better?) writing that would come later. Devil's Nightmare is on my Amazon watchlist

As far as Lahaie, I've gone down that "other" road, and it was a fun little trip. I've got a bunch of Rollin films to get to, and she's in many of them. I like that she went up the ladder of filmdom, and not down, like some others. Also, love her character name in Grapes: La grande femme blonde!

I will Czech out the other films you mentioned. Harf!

If anybody likes the anthology stuff like me check out recently added Holiday on Netflix. Not the greatest but some of them are really creepy. Really enjoyed the Father's Day one and the Halloween and Christmas one.

^^ nope. Here's my gripe with RZ. Direct, stop writing. And stop putting your wife in every movie. She is terrible. But if you like his stuff, by all means I hope you enjoy the movie tonight!

Zombie's movies make me feel slimy.

Finally watched Hausu yesterday, and I can't remember the last time I had so much fun watching a movie. Nearly every frame is packed with craziness. The effects, the music, the girls, it's all so wonderful. If you haven't seen it yet, please do so ASAP.

Finally saw Don't Breathe and I really enjoyed it. Same director as the Evil Dead remake which was actually lots of fun as well. I wouldn't exactly call it a horror movie but it had so much suspense all the way through. I also loved the ambiguity of the entire movie. None of that good versus evil stuff. Just people trying to get by in a world that doesn't always make sense.

Also the way they handled the pitch black scenes was pure genius and I hope every other horror movie steals that idea. Instead of making it so dark you can't see anything or doing the green vision bullshit everyone uses they made it clear that it was pitch black but used a grey light shift so the audience can CLEARLY AND EASILY see everything that is happening while the actors walked around blind. I loved it. So sick and tired of horror movies that make it impossible to see what's happening. It's just a cheap trick to hide shit special effects and attempt to build tension without skill or effort.

Wanted to mention just one of the recent flicks I checked out, because, well everyone should watch it. Why it doesn't have a bigger following is beyond me, though to be honest I'd only discovered it recently myself.
It's called Don't Go In The House, and it's one of those charming, off-kilter horror flicks like Tourist Trap (one of my personal faves) that seems to have been made in a vacuum. It's a low-budget Psycho rip-off, with a smattering of Maniac, a wonky score (with some awesome Disco songs to get stuck in your brain for a few hours), a very unique lead, quirky dialogue, and a mean streak running throughout.
I noticed a little ways into the film that it was an edited version (seemed like a TV edit actually), which was weird since it was an HD transfer. Despite that, this is a new fave. You can catch the uncut version on YouTube (I went back and watched the naughty bits right after finishing it on Amazon).
    Here's the trailer:

Solid selection, Mark. I caught it back during an intensive Don't period that we embarked on, I'm only slightly ashamed to admit, shorty after we returned from an opening day screening of Grindhouse.

Wish I could say that I knew it from youth.

I have about 20 films I could expound upon, but I'll keep it down to three. If you watch enough of these things you will find yourself hitting on the same kind of scenarios more often than not. Within the course of a week I watched a(n unofficial) Spooky Hole in the Ground trilogy.
The Gate: Never watched this as a youngin' despite it's cult status. Felt like The Evil Dead for kids. Effectively scary. Convincing FX. Dorff's best performance?
The Pit: This is some batshittery from 1981 (a good year for horror). Really weird kid finds a hole in the forest with creatures in it, and hilarity ensues. Might be the weirdest kid in horror film history. Also includes fantastic dialogue, some super inappropriate goings on with his live-in baby-sitter, and a great downer of an ending. "Abergail's missing and so is Mrs. Oliphant, aren't they? And Freddy and Christina... They don't eat chocolate bars. You know what they eat?"
The Hole: Not bad for a modern PG-13 kid-based horror flick. Some decent scares, and hey, it's a Joe Dante film.

And some not-horror-horror films: Hard Candy (meh); The Gift (the Jason Bateman one, it's good!); Dementia (eh, not bad, easy to figure out); Would You Rather? (another meh).

Gaahhh, I just suffered through Train to Poosan. Avoid like the plague, unless you enjoyed World War Z for the family drama and not being so terribly violent. Even LESS violence, even MORE drama. And it's really, REALLY stupid & sappy.
