I spoke about it either the night I saw it, or the next day. Took me time to process it, but I couldn't agree more. Instant buy for me when it releases.

Just finally watched The Witch too, after waiting for it to come out. I tried seeing it in theatre, but think it was criminally underpresented to most folks. A very well done film, as expected. Perfect set up of atmosphere and setting I think. And, surprisingly (since I just mentioned it in The Hallow) another film with two GoT actors (whatever that says). It has all the right elements, and I think they really did a good job on it. Great performances that give you that perfect shade of gray on the characters. I loved the incorporation of classical horror and witchcraft elements, and all in all it just evoked an excellently creepy feeling throughout. I kind of think the language might be a little ill-received by 'standard' American audiences, and it certainly is not the jumpscare/slasher pics that pass for horror these days. Happy to have seen it and will definitely watch it again.

Couple of new special edition posters just put out for the blu-ray release:

Happy to discuss it more, without getting too spoiler-y. But recommend, 100%.

PS - argh!! Just started reading comments from people how the movie is "boring," "not scary," and 'incorrectly identified/marketed as horror." Jeebus, people. It actually bothers me how so many completely misunderstand the genre, and cinema in general. Please do dismiss and ignore any comments made with those sentiments above.

^^^ Another thing though i was thinking is that you know if the original Blair Witch had the type of internet media we have today im pretty positive it would have the same reaction as the Witch had to be honest. But since the internet was in its infancy still The Blair Witch did not suffer from online negativity like this one did. Ppl tend to post lots of negative comments about these types of movies if they don't have in your face scares most of the time.

I felt the same way. it really hit me in this crazy way after I saw it in the theater, like I felt a weight on my mind. I couldn't get it out of my head.

Excuse me if I overlooked anybody's hyperbole, I only skipped back a few pages.

This. Like saying Beethoven's 9th sucks donkey balls because the bass never drops.

I had the rare sensation of being heartbroken and terrified, while at the same time feeling an immense glee due to finally watching a horror film that affected me this much again. Insanely great performances, especially by the children.

Oh, I didn't mean it in any way, other than to say it had been discussed in positive light before. My apologies.

My personal favorite from The VVitch is how visceral the movie is. Really gets in your head.

I loved that the actual witch wasn't very prevalent in a direct/in - screen sense to the movie, but more so a basis for the family to be ripped apart from the inside out. The accusations and paranoia aspect was awesome.

    Phenomenal acting and gorgeous cinematography.

The fact they made this film for what is considered no budget at all makes it even more impressive. I will admit though the -animal attack- startled the crap out of me when it happened.

I appreciate your excitement, but perhaps you guys should put that particular part in spoiler tags for the people that haven't seen it yet... ;)

Glad to see I'm not the only one that was blown away by this.

Horror isn't just about scares and gore... It can be psychologically jarring or weigh on your mind long after the movie is over. There are so many different elements to horror.
That's why I was miffed when people were saying "The Babadook" was a bad movie. Was it a traditional horror movie? Maybe not, but it made me feel tense as hell, had me thinking and analyzing it for days... Hell, dealing with a dysfunctional child as a single mother is horrifying enough in my book.

Anyway, I really need to see The Witch. I have a feeling that I'm going to really like it based on what you are all saying about it.

This 7-minute horror short has been making the rounds in the festival circuit:

"The Smiling Man" is about a little girl home alone who finds herself face-to-face with pure evil.

Actually it is for me and a good portion of ppl HOWEVER when a good mind fuck is done right it can just as potentially be scary. I just really think its kind of cheesy a director tries to pull off the whole psychological mind scare thing the whole time with bumps in the dark and things you barely ever see or notice just to pull of an ubber lame monster they couldn't afford to budget right or even worse when it turns out to be nothing at all.

Don't get me wrong, I love my scares and gore... but when it's blended with some psychological twists and tension, it elevates it to another level.

I've seen a lot of shit taking Criminal Justice classes (rotting corpses, autopsy photos, floaters), so gore on it's own is a bore. Give me a story behind it, and make me uncomfortable, and that's when the scary factor comes in.

EDIT: Because I'm sure someone is curious... the most freakish thing I saw in class was a photo of a elderly woman who was found months after she died in her bed at home. Everything was a brown mess of fuzzy mold colonies, rot, and bodily fluids. You had to stare a while to figure out where the woman actually was among all the crap, but the hair gave it away... hot damn, that was freaky. Please, check on your elderly neighbors, because nobody should have to become that.

Growing up in the '70s, and watching spooky shit like The Other, Burnt Offerings, and those crazy Disney movies ala Watcher in the Woods, I do have a soft spot for the creepy stuff that doesn't require gallons of blood or exploding heads. But I also love movies with... gallons of blood and exploding heads!

I watched The Boy last night (2016 version, not to be confused with "The Boy" from 2015  ; sheesh, this is another Beneath/Beneath type deal (both 2013), not to be mistake for being Beneath (2007) - seriously, where do the studios come up with this stuff. But anyways...). So anyhow, not that great if I am honest. Very little atmosphere at all, no kind of story or anything that pulls you in, and pretty standard level of acting you might expect from this sort of fare. I hadn't read anything about it going in, so I had no idea about the reception or the premise of the movie. Without giving away anything , I will say its central conceit is not exactly original, and in fact the climactic 'reveal' borrows so heavily from others movies and I have seen it done much better before. I don't want to say which, as it might give away what develops, but honestly, there are no surprises here.

I was also really thrown out of the believability of the film by some very shoddy set design and prop placements. I mean, these are trivial things, but it is such a small effort to work out how to do it right. I presume that it was a cost thing (maybe) but the film had a budget of $10mil, and looking at it (and being filmed in Canada, with no headliner actors) I am not really sure where that went. It also really bothers me when movies have to resort to using a 'placed' setting for their story - in this case the UK - that is evidently forced and not accurate, nor does it have any bearing on the plot itself. It doesn't lend any credence to your product at all [for me]. A small argument, I know, but one I am just overtired of. Anyway, nothing really new to see here, nor a great entertaining way to necessarily spend an hour and a half.

That was fun, thanks for sharing. If anyone is going to check this out keep the volume high for sure.

I saw BITE after reading a few rave reviews and hearing how at festivals they pass out vomit bags for the audience after a few incidents. It was the most worthless movie I've seen all year. Not a single redeeming factor. Not even impressive by pure gross out standards.

    Finally saw The VVitch.
Other than I think they could have rolled the credits 5 minutes earlier it was pretty much a perfect horror movie in my book.
It was haunting, disturbing and left me with some nagging questions.

I can see what you are saying with that, too. I felt, given the whole vague tone of the film and how much is left up to audience interpretation, the ending did feel a little bit 'overt' and obvious if you will, almost like they tacked on something to suit viewers who just want to see a movie like this go full-witch, else they would be disappointed. But I also thought it was fine.

Just so long as they stay away - completely - from trying to do any more sequels/prequels/whatevs. I would not think the filmmakers have any intention of this of course, but studios can buy the property/attain licenses, whatever, and make it happen. I hope the creative people behind this can maintain control, but you never know. It has happened to a lot of other horror films in the past.

Well I would not be surprised to see The VVitch 2 being announced soon.
I would be ok with it if they only kept the basic idea around - interpreting New England Folklore.
You can do much with this idea - just please do not do an actual prequel or sequel to this movie.

PS: I agree - the ending felt like it may have been attached to satisfy a broader audience.

I watched the first couple on Netflix. I am undecided as well. Honestly the SCREAM series on netflix is way better. A little too teenage angst but pretty funny and well written actually. Mindless fun.

I watched Crush The Skull last night with some friends. It is a no budget horror for sure but it was hilarious. Not often a horror film with zero budget and zero special effects is funny enough to carry it through but we couldn't stop laughing the whole time and it was intentional humor. Not like so bad it's funny, actually funny. Which is even more impressive because it wasn't gross out humor or grade school humor. I liked it a lot but it is s stretch to call it horror.

Is anyone following Nicolas Winding Refn's project to re-adapt some horror classics? He is acting as a producer for these, and has already announced his company will handle remakes of Maniac Cop and Witchfinder General. Anyway, he has just gave word they will be tackling yet another classic, this time the 1973 Giallo piece, What Have You Done to Solange?.

I have no idea how these might turn out, but I am pretty fascinated by it. Normally I would be be the first person to cry fowl over a redo, but I admit to feeling intrigued. These aren't properties that would expect remakes of, being more or less obscure cult films, but that is what makes it pretty interesting to me. Anyone can take a big, known franchise and reboot it with some new version, but it should be interesting to see how someone takes one of these old horror movies made on a very limited budget and completely different production and distribution model, and expands it to the current day market. I think whether you like Refn's films or not, it will be interesting to see what comes out of this. He has the artistic chops to do something quite bizarre with it, so let's hope the directors are equally inspired and dedicated to the source material.

Some more info and links to the projects and official announcement available here.

Finally saw The Witch. Was not disappointed.

I also actually liked the ending.

When you think of it this way, she just lost her entire family. All the prayers, all the godliness, none of it protected them. Instead it caused them to descend into a flurry of accusations and abusive (and nearly murderous) paranoia. What else is there to do but try to talk to that weird goat that gored your dad, apparently spoke to your twin siblings, and oddly has decided to stick around in the barn? In the end she becomes a witch, but what I took away from that wasn't only title fulfillment, but she also found a new family. A family that in the very first encounter, shows her a type of enlightenment. Her true family had been trying so hard to attain an equivalent, but despite all of their religious fervor they couldn't protect themselves nor find the bounty their God had promised.

So yeah... I don't think the ending was an afterthought at all.
