I enjoyed it and can't really imagine a better Godzilla movie coming out of the US (at least anytime soon).

It has it faults, but was fun and a nice throwback to classic Sci Fi films of the past.

It was great seeing it in IMAX, but the 3D was not very exciting and IMO under utilized.

I'm taking my wife to see it on Saturday.

    Saw it today.

Judging by the trailers, I thought it would be closer to the original in terms of story. I was surprised to see it was basically a hero film.

This isn't the first time Godzilla has taken the role of a hero-he played such a role for a significant portion of the Shōwa era.

Have not seen it yet , but my expectations are pretty low .... but it earned about $38 million friday and projections now have it making $90-$100 million over the whole weekend ( up from the earlier $60 million projection). So that's very good news :)

Wouldn't be too surprised if they announce a sequel in the near future....

The worst part was realizing that there wasn't going to be a post-credits scene :x

My favorite part was when it was over. Worst remake ever.

It was a pretty good movie except for the cheesy love shit I could have done without. You can't expect it to live up to the classics, but as an American version its pretty damn good.

my wife and kid saw it without me while I was at work today...that was shady.

Anyways, they both loved it, being mild fans.

I loved it. I mean, for what it is (big budget American film) it was great. It is a slow burn though, it really builds up tension and all before and takes it's time but I'm OK with that.

I didn't so much see the "love story" as that, it was more a "family story" I guess. At least that's how I took it. Then again, I have a wife and 5 year old so I'm kind of a dead on target. I thought it wasn't TOO intrusive, if this dude had no family or no reason to be involved (bomb guy) it'd have been annoying. Plus, for his brief time, Cranston killed it. I felt so much for him when his wife died man, fuck, that shit was rough.

Overall there were a lot of classic nods as far as the film. 1- Godzilla's an ancient hero out to balance nature and the folly of man 2- There's a scientist frequently warning the military, the military doesn't listen until too late 3- Any corn-ball lines or moments were done with conviction and seriousness 4- Godzilla got some 1-on-1 time eye contact with the main leads.

The music was awesome, just when I was getting antsy for some fighting it finally happened, atomic breath down the throat decapitation finisher. I literally yelled "FUCK YEAH!" out loud at that.

I too was a little surprised it wasn't a re-boot of the original where Godzilla's more the enemy. But I'm happy with what they did.

Again, for what it was, it was awesome. Fun, stupid, lots of heavy handed messages, cornball-with-conviction acting (UNLIKE the cornball and we know it wink to the camera acting of the 1997 turd.) Loved that shit.

I totally agree with you ^

Thought it was awesome, and I wanted to watch it again as soon as it was over.
Was expecting disappointment based on the monster toys, but they turned out to be pretty cool. Perfecf amount of story and action.

Made my dislike of Pacific Rim grow even more.

I saw it again in 2-d this time. The I-Max 3-d was a much larger screen and way louder but the 2-d version was damn good. I will see it at the drive-in when it plays there too. I can't see what people don't like about it. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 20!!!! :D

Saw it yesterday, and enjoyed it. I still miss the men-in-costumes type of Godzilla movies, but for this style, it was great. BTW, there are some hidden Mothra references to look for. I missed them both and only heard about them afterwards. For those wanting to catch them, read on...

They are both just the word "Mothra" written down. One was reportedly on the chalkboard at the school in the beginning, and another was on the fish tank when they return to the house. I wonder if that "cocoon" (or so it looked) that was in the blast radius in the tank will grow into Mothra in the future. ;)

And yes, I did not love the design of Godzilla. Small head following down a rapidly growing thick neck to a giant belly. I know the design has been out in the open for a long time, but I tried to avoid all references to the movie so I could go in fresh.

    I saw

the fish tank Mothra reference, laughed out loud. There was also a fake kaiju movie poster on the wall in Cranston's home.

    I also thought

that maybe the soundtrack occasionally referenced the original movie's? Not sure why I had that impression, I'd have to do a side-by-side comparison to be sure.

Lots of beautiful photography in general. Several moments where the camera focussed briefly on real creatures of nature, a subtle reminder of the movie's "message" without hitting you over the head with it. Reminded me a little of similar shots in "Silent Running."

No matter how Godzilla is made people will complain. This was made for a new audience of people that have never watched the classics. If they made one with a guy in the suit it would probably just please us here. The majority of people would hate it.

I love this Bob Goldthwait Godzilla

I thought Godzilla had a good "guy in a suit" aesthetic honestly.
