On my phone I couldn't tell if this was a pushead piece or Florian Bertmer, based on the skulls. Turns out it's John Baizley.
Baizley is to Pus as Schorr is to Williams. Actually, Baizley has a fair bit of Mucha influence going on too, at times...
Love pus and florian Baizley is in another level! It's beyond drawing skulls, he can make flayed skin beautiful.
@deadboy: That is fucking gorgeous. Love each one's work - and despite the superficial similarities in their subject matter, which obviously stem from a shared love for everything rotten and metal, I consider their styles highly individual and recognizable. Baizley's use of color, combination of techniques and the Mucha influence are what makes him really stand out in my eyes, though...
sorry for just bringing this back. Jus wanted to add my 2 cents, I'm a big Baroness fan so by nature I like Baizley's artwork as well. I do like the aforementioned Mucha influence on Baizley. I read in an interview where he said that Xmen had just as much of an influence on him as Mucha. After reading that it seemed more apparent to me in his work. I think the big difference is that Baizley will fully admit that Pus is a big "influence" on him, not sure if Florian does. I think the thing that bothers me about Florian is his signature. It's a straight pus rip. I think that's the huge step over the line. I just dont think it's ok for bands who cant get Pus to do something, to get baizley/bertmer. I know for a fact that some of those bands did that. That's shitty. Although I'm sure that's how Boris got a lot of his work too. Pus is the OG, I wouldn't mention either of the other 2 in the breath. I'm sure all 3 artists would be ok with that.
All I know is I felt like a real shithead, when I was at the bookstore, and I said to my wife "Hey Heidi c'mere, you know those skullwings I like, well this is the guy that desig... Uh wait, uh wait a minute, hold on, where's Pusheads name... Uh well this guy isn't that guy, but man if that doesn't look like a Pushead painting" Actually, to be truthful I don't think I corrected myself in the store, she most likely will think that that painting was a Pushead piece forever... That is if she doesn't lurk this thread... Mods, Mods, can we get this thing shut down, I really don't need my wife calling me out anymore than she already does.
Hate to revive an old thread again but.. Anyone going to the Baroness shows over the next couple of weeks?? I need a favor. Also for the first time ever, I preordered a record. The green/yellow record has me quite intrigued. The pre-order LP comes with a book of Baizley's work. Aaron Horkey also just did a new Baroness logo.
The horkey print is beautiful. Unfortunately I won't be seeing Baroness anytime soon and I believe it's a tour exclusive print. I also preordered the "book" lp of green/yellow. Some people are so talented its absurd, John Baizley is one of those magnificent bastards.
I'm only a casual fan of the band, so I don't REALLY wanna drop $40 on a 2LP set. BUT I kinda only want it for the book. Not that I wouldn't appreciate the music. I haven't decided if I should bite just for the art book or not yet.
Burlesque will be offering a red version of the tour print. Date not confirmed yet though. Anyone know a good place to pre-order the green/yellow LP, that will ship international?
On my first listen-through, I thought it sounded more accessible and rock, less metal. Dunno if that's a good or bad thing though.
Checked out Eide's on your recommendation this weekend - That place is rad! Even just the smell of the place when you walk in the door says "awesome comic book and record store." Wish I could have seen it back in the day when they carried more toys though!
