I'm glad this thread got bumped. I don't think I would have searched for it. Anyways, thanks guys for sharing. It's my turn to share some of the bands I love, that haven't been mentioned yet (at least I don't think so). Good choices Mike Like Bike. Nagisa, Tenniscoats and World's End GF also rock my world. Made me think of Cinq, which are on the same label and made what was my favorite album for a short while...
@ core4pro: iseewatudidthar @ Mike Like Bike : maybe stating the obvious, but just to point out that OOIOO are a Boredoms offshoot, and that WEGF are technically one guy's solo project, although maybe 'they' could be classed as a collective? Also, I first heard of Green Milk from the Planet Orange a couple of years ago, but then got them confuzed with the pop group Greeen & consequently lost intrest ... THANK YOU for putting me back on the right track!
Well, Yoshimi is in both bands, but the other OOIOO members would be offended to be called an "offshoot".
Coupla 'bonus' tracks from Perfume for the Unbelievers. To quote one YouTube poster, they are a "Japanese techno pop unit, not an idol group"! "Electro World": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9JqmZJbiy8&hd=1 People say they have to lip-sync live because they use too much computers on their records. I dunno bout that, but this version of "Edge", live at the Budokan, is killer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2_nxA9TyUY Anyway, they're not just another record-company manufactured group. They've been friends since school, and they've been together about 10yrs now. It took them 8 to get to the top. You might wanna watch this "Introduction To Perfume", not just to learn more about them, but as an interesting insight into the machinations of the J-pop world too: Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDBWdL9qrBM Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBXKZvdc-O8&NR=1 Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOabnwPyrU4&NR=1

for those unfamiliar with SCANDAL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1rND210lQ4 saw them perform a few years back when the Japan Nite tour came through SF..these girls kick ass...the school girl outfits are just a bonus
^ That's a great video! The 5.6.7.8's. Originally one of several Japanese Ramones-clone bands, these girls developed a style more in common with the Cramps. Quentin Tarantino came across them, so the story goes, while he was in Japan shooting "Kill Bill Vol.1" : "I Walk Like Jayne Mansfield" & "I'm Blue" ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6bcZtX5zQ0 "Woo Hoo" ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIKORxPeFq8 "Barracuda" ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLh7g-dpVv8 was featured in "The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift".
SHONEN KNIFE Where to begin? These girls were really kinda IMPORTANT in the 80's indie music scene, both in the US and the UK. They were loved by other musicians including Sonic Youth, Redd Kross, and the young Kurt Cobain. And let's face it, who COULD resist 3 cute Japanese girls in home-made dresses singing three-chord songs almost, though not entirely, exclusively about food! Banana chips for me! In the afternoon, banana chips and tea should have a life span no longer than that of a grasshopper. But something oddly spellbinding occurs when deceptively silly lyrics are sandwiched between a buoyant guitar and a rapid-fire, pop-punk drum kit. Which perhaps explains why the Japanese female rock trio Shonen Knife is still singing songs about cookies, sushi, jelly beans, and of course banana chips, nearly 25 (make that 30 now) years after its inception." ~ Christopher Murther, The Boston Globe.
I wrote them a fan letter once - Sent them sum crappy pics I'd taken at a gig in Oxford. It was '91 maybe, same time as this appearance on "The Word": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDcZTBJGsXw Anyway, I kinda forgot about it, then maybe six months later I got a letter back from them! Can't find the letter at the mo, but I do still have this bandana/snotrag thing which they also sent:

Inazawa left in 2005 to form his own band, Vola and the Oriental Machine. Diminutive yet scary guitarist Hisako has played with Bloodthirsty Butchers and Shiina Ringo, and has her own band, Toddle. Bassist is currently with a band called Crypt City.
I love Number Girl. I also like Zazen Boys. Too bad they didn't play in L.A. when they came to the states in October.
love Pizzicato Five, suprised the hell out of me when Futurama used their song "Baby Love Child" in an episode oh and more recently, Perfume's "Monochrome Effect" popped up in a recent ep of American Dad
Rich already posted DENKI GROOVE's "Mononoke Dance"* here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=33370 and yup, they've been around for over 20 years now. All their videos are pure madness. (But, a word to the wise, often feature different mixes to the album cuts - They don't use guitars much on their albums for instance.) And, on the subject of weird animations, I don't know anything about this band (except that they're a "breakbeat duo from Japan") but this is a WICKED video, and not a bad tune to boot: HIFANA "WAMONO" ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY6iyZzpamg

I discovered Japanese music in 1985.Kalv (Heresy) and Dig (pre Earache records) put out a flexi that had Lip Cream and Execute on it called "Anglican Scrape Attic".I got it from them before a gig in Nottingham. It cost 40p and it skipped like fuck.I was hooked. The same year I bought the GISM LP. http://7inchcrust.blogspot.com/2008/05/ ... flexi.html The flexi said to play it at 2000MPH
