OK, so there have been some transfers to Chicago and no one has really met up or gotten to know anyone else in almost a year. So if anyone is interested in meeting up the first weekend in Dec (that's Dec 4th) for some shenanigans and what have you mark your calendar for the CASK's first get together of 2010, or as I like to call it "Better late than never."
I don't have any specifics at this time, so if you want to meet at Roto and then go somewhere, or meet at a L stop, or whatever, the main goal of the night is to have fun and hang out with some fellow toy nerds!

I don't know my work schedule yet for that weekend but if I'm working I'd be out by 11:30pm so if you guys are planning on going into the night I'm good no matter what. If I'm not working, then even better.

I'll drive no matter what probably so if a few people need rides I'm good for it, I live near Western and Peterson. I also don't drink if sober drivers might be needed and I can go.

not to be a party pooper, but wouldn't it be a better fit to wait until the following weekend for the gargamel show? it'd be a late night, so mister blooddrinker could join us, too :) the cheap mexican joint right around the corner is a good gathering spot that's open until 5am. or, if you guys want to get together for a meal beforehand, may i suggest the ridiculous but delicious franks 'n' dawgs?

    also, i'm in.

gargamel show works for me as well... but i can't stand franks 'n' dawgs! the ONLY good thing about them is the buns they use (just thinking about them makes me want a lobster roll). and even though poor blooddrinker isn't a lush, i certainly am, so delilah's is always worth a visit!

i liked it better when it was called "hot doug's"...
they're a pale comparison, and i just don't care for their particular brand of product.
went, had a horrible experience, and never looked back. don't get me wrong...
encased meats are one of god's gifts to man, but franks 'n' dawgs just brings out
all the worst possible connotations of "hot saugage injection."

Really, I had hope it'd be a "Hot Dougs without the stupid line that only exists because they keep shitty hours in order to create hype" so I didn't have to wait as long. That sucks. Don't get me wrong, I love Hot Dougs but I'd bet you money the line wouldn't exist with more available hours and that is the only reason those hours exist. To create hype. I simply don't buy any other BS reason I hear, but I'll be damned if it aint awesome.

Well that way everyone could get to know each other, I don't know, I think any excuse to get together is a good one, including Garg, or some beers, or playing Scrabble at Denny's!

Speaking of which 2 weeks away!? What! Anybody have any ideas where they want to go or do?

denny's? in chicago? no way... doesn't exist!
but yeah, i hear ya, any reason is a good reason. as to places, well the closer the better,
right? i can do some digging over the next few days, as i'm relatively close. (okay, so i'm
in roscoe village, but roto's only 5-10 minutes away on the 11 bus.) also, depends on what
time we're planning to pull this shindig off, but those are just details... =p

Well there's Denny's right OUTSIDE (aka across the street) from Chicago. I fucking love and hate Denny's but I can't blame anyone for NOT wanting to go there.

so it's right next to wal-mart, then? =p
but if that's the vibe we're after, why not hit up the golden apple?
it's on lincoln, within walking distance from roto, and open all kinds
    of late...

Damn dude, harsh, the burbs of the city (especially the bordering ones) can be pretty awesome, especially for food. May not be swarming with hipsters and yuppies and indie rock and shit, but still fun. Also, the burbs have better hot dog stand food. I mean there's plenty of kick ass places in the city but now that the city has a larger upper-middle class population, many who aren't from the area originally, looking for "No Reservations" style dining a lot of the more blue collar and original type of hot dog/burger joints that are TRUE are in the burbs with those communities.

The 2 Denny's I'm thinking of aren't near any Walmarts. One is on Harlem and is literally "across the street" from Chicago, the other is....also on Harlem across the street from the city. One is further north (near Lawrence) the other south (I can't remember, Division?) Both are, well, Denny's. But fun to go and hang and see the truckers, Juggalos, Goths and grandmas all gather at the same joint.

Well the burbs are going to be a pain because most of us live in the city. I've never been to the golden apple, is it good?
I'm gonna throw out some suggestions next week work has been crazy and I haven't really had a chance to look stuff up, plus Thanksgiving and the wifey's bday is next week so I've been busy with that.
I don't care where we go as long as it's fun!

Yeah not really SUGGESTING the burbs, just talking.

Golden Apple is OK, it's your general diner. Not great but not total shit, I used to hang there a LOT during high school. I doubt it's changed much. It's a good coffee-and-bullshit type joint.

sorry bd, wasn't trying to rag on the burbs, just the "across the street" comment reminded me
of wal-mart and not being in city limits. i've actually had to acclimate myself to the burbs a bit
recently... the missus' best friend had a baby, so they all moved out to batavia. that, and her
folks live out in downer's grove and don't generally like to come into the city so much. and a
good buddy of mine moved from pennsylvania to somewhere near elgin. so yeah, i've had a
little exposure to the culinary landscape outside the 312 area code. (but without a car, i tend
    to stay bike/cta accessible.)

i tried to google denny's in chicago, got evergreen park and harwood heights (which i think is
the lawrence one you mentioned.) too bad there isn't a waffle house around... that's a place
that i truly love to hate. (not to mention innovator of the best thing to happen to hash browns
    since the hash brown.)

It really depends on which suburb, some suck hard, some have gems that no food blog or TV show would ever even know about because they're simply not in "hot" spots. That's why I love the area, when you grow up in the city but have friends in the bubrs it's a good mix because you really learn it all. It's not just all strip malls and Walmarts is all.

My wife's family lives in Rockford and I want to die every time we visit, Rockford sucks. My wife's dad is such a "city snob" he feels the "Real" Chicago ends at Western, he doesn't even acknowledge the rest of the city outside of the upper class or hip areas. It makes me laugh because he wasn't even raised in the city so it's like who's he to claim anything?

Anyway, again I'm cool to go where ever. It's just a matter of timing but don't try and work a schedule around me.
