I have a question for the DC readership. Does editors and writers address readers all the time in off captions during stories, or is that a Marvel thing ?
that disappeared for a good decade or so, but lately they have been doing it a lot lately in superman titles (supergirl, superman, action comics, adventure comics, and all the mini series) since every single title is basically another chapter in the whole "war of the supermen" thing going on over the last 2 years or so. marvel doesn't really have a universal structure, so they don't use it much. i think occassionally in the x-men titles, and deadpool titles use it quite a bit...
Ah ! Thanks. They do it all the time in Spidey's titles. But I think you put the finger on one of my other interogation, as you state that DC has a universal structure and Marvel don't. So I guess that's the main difference between two structure ?
By universal structure, you mean a uniform structure, don't you? "Universal structure", in this instance, could have a couple different meanings.
i meant that the DC Universe has structure to it. all titles effect other titles. something happens in Birds of Prey, it can effect stories in Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, etc. Everything has an impact somewhere at any time within the DC universe. Marvel, on the other hand, outside of a few title groupings (x-men titles, spider-man titles, avengers) within the company are mostly just random stories that have no lasting effect and/or have an impact on the Marvel Universe as a whole. so maybe in meant uniform structure, but i used the word universal because in the comic world, the serialized structure is referred to as that companies universe.
just read it, and it's awesome. i love how there is a Pandon figure on top of the dead collector dudes tv... anyone reading the vertigo title iZombie? so far i find it to be the best book in months, allred art never gets dull.... that, and the viltrumite war in Invincible. those last few pages of Invincible #72... !!!
I think this is why Marvel continually updates its http://marvel.com/universe/. While DC tries to integrate crossing storylines into the narrative, Marvel just uses the 'Universe' as an index to make sense out of it all. However, DC's (& Geoff Johns) 'Blackest Night' story arc has left me totally confused. They knitted in the death of Batman into it, and now I have no clue what's going on. Thanks Lantern Corps! Still unsure how the Alex Ross DC stories (JSA & Magog) will effect anything. But hey, its comics. yay for comics!
Missed Jim Woodring doing a signing yesterday for his new book 'Weathercraft'. Have the book however, which is excellent, dark, uncomfortable, comics he's been producing for years. Love it.
Just finished issue 43 of "The Boys" and can't wait for the next story arc! Some of the guest artists have been a bit hit or miss, but Garth Ennis continues to impress. Can't wait to see his take on organized religion via "The Boys".
I know Blackest Night was confusing, but the Batman aspect played a minor role in it. (slight spoilers below) The Black Hand used what was supposedly Batman's corpse to create power rings for the Black Lanterns. The "death of Batman" is being investigated in most of the Bat-books, including The Return of Bruce Wayne mini-series, but has no more involvement with the Blackest Night storyline. Also, The Boys is great- I generally wait for trades, but I'm anxious to start the new storyline!
King City, very wonderful! Oversized and heavy metal weird and awesome! And Orc Stain, I can't even describe other than , buy or get the collected! For mainstream, Spidey man the gauntlet is really good, some of the best in awhile. All Marvel Cosmic is a must! DC Morrison Bats is good stuff REBELS and forget the movie , the one drop Jonah Hex! and Manga: Billy Bat and D.M.C. and anything by junji ito
The anime of DMC is ridiculous, music is good too. Someone at Adult Swim should really do a Metalpocalypse/DMC cross-over.
apologies if someone already brought this up, but someone sent me a link to this rare comic book auction http://auctions.tigergroupllc.com/cgi-b ... tegory/ALL
The live action D.M.C. is a lot of fun. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4rC0VdbE2c and Jack ill Dark is played by GENE SIMMONS! nice touch! but the anime rules! and the soundtrack is awesome, but don't sing SATSUGAI, at a Japanese company, i've had a lot of explaining to do
I was really expecting greatness from this book, as I love both Sam Kieth and the previous Arkham Asylum, that was done by Dave McKean did years ago but it's a total bore fest.
^^^^Almost bought this on Wed. Now I think I'll wait. The Joker's Asylum One-Shot series has been pretty good. Introducing a different villain every week from The Joker's viewpoint.
i haven't picked up the joker's asylum books, because i'm not all that into the character one-shot stuff. BUT, the faces of evil Prometheus was pretty damn good, so maybe this format is better now than it was a decade ago or so. maybe i'll grab them. speaking of batman baddies, anyone reading Gotham City Sirens? i've thought about jumping onto that book too, but doom patrol & rebels launching around the same time as this title, i couldn't jump into EVERY dc book like i used to...
Comics and trade paperbacks I've been reading lately: Chew Vol. 1-2 Wormwood, Gentleman Corpse HC Vol. 1-2 Hellblazer (haven't missed an issue in 20+ years..) American Vampire Fables Goon Crossed: Family Values Nemesis (not as good as Kick-Ass) Ignition City TPB
neil young's greendale has been done up in comic format, with artwork by cliff chiang. vertigo gn's have been very good lately...
I agree, Vertigo putting out some great stuff lately. I picked Greendale up, but haven't actually read it yet. I never heard the Neil Young album, so I wanted to pick up the CD first. Cliff Chiang's artwork is always great! Did anyone read Brave and Bold #33? That was a great one-issue story, even if you don't read DC superhero comics.
the current run on Brave and Bold is awesome, all good stories. the aquaman / demon vs dagon! so good!
