I think the Spencers gift references might have gotten out of control because of me. I think I know what this place is/was now. My trips to the mall back in the early 90's were to buy N20 carts at the kitchen supply shop. In retrospect I would have been better off buying stuff at Spencers.

I got to see this toy in person thanks to MrX. It's obviously not my regular cup of tea but it is a welll designed toy. It's huge and scary so I think anyone who like Pushead should keep an open mind about this figure. I think it would fit right in on a shelf full of pirates and captains.

One of the coolest things about this toy is the design process that created it. Hopefully MrX will take the time to explain how he is making toys these days.

I can guarantee you this will not be my case.
The bop dragons etc I've seen painted by sutfin have done nothing at all for me,
and I imagine on this would turn me off even more.
The spencer references I think applies and can be used numerous times,
also, this whole thread hasn't been in mean spirits or rude in anyway
just some good fun especially after Glenn asked what spencers was.

This all just reaffirms to me how kiss ass things have become and how the board needs to lighten up. If people say they hate a toy I have 20 off I don't feel the need to go crazy and defend it. If everyone liked the same thing and didn't say anything negative it would be all rainbows and unicorns over here and just a newer KR.
Which is where I think this would do better, but I see the attraction it would hold to some pus fans and metal guys.

I want Mike to produce the raddest figure possible, both for him and for me the collector, hence I addressed my comments about the figure direct to Klim, and my missive contained both negative, positive and what I hope above all are constructive comments and suggestions.

Personally I love the head and teh character, but I dont like the crouch. Its original and different...but maybe too different for fight figure enthusiasts. I want a big guy like this to stand strong within my fight figs and loom large amongst the skullwings and pirates. Maybe it will be possible to have an alternative lower body with a less challenging stance - that way Mike can realize his vision and satisfy the punters? Whatever happens, I'm excited to see how the final product will look and hoping for an amazing clear version.

Anybody that is familiar with Sutfin's work can see this fits into his scheme of things perfectly. It's not kaiju related, so any references to fight figures and kaiju is sort of pointless.

I couldn't give a fuck about skulls in general, it's his style and level of talent that attracts me to his work (and the fact that he's just an awesome person helps too). I can totally respect people's negative (thoughtful) opinions, and I like expressing negative opinions on shit I don't like, but when I see a thread title of some shit I know I don't like, the most I can do (if I'm feeling opinionated) is post one or two things about how shit I think it is and why. Then I move on to shit I *do* like. Whatever, who gives a shit what I think. Exactly.

I don't get the Spencer comments though, that place was all about sex-joke-toys, black light posters, neon, and lava lamps. Total hippy/doper/sleazebag shit. I don't ever remember seeing skulls/metal shit there, and I'm probably older than a lot of you fuckers and I would go in there way before I was even a teenager. I don't even think Slayer had formed yet. The fart machines RULED though. My dad refused to get me one.

Anyway, Mike rules, I personally love this sculpt, but this probably isn't the right board for a majority of people to fully appreciate it (and for fucks sake, neither is KR). Battle on...

You clearly haven't been to a Spencer's in the last 15 years or so then, tons of "metal" junk. Sorry, don't mean to bring the store up again, just commenting on this. Fart machiens rule, I have both the Fart Machine 1 and 2.0 (yeah, they updated it with more fart sounds, awesome!)

I don't like Mikes Bops myself, but it's not him, I just don't like Bop Dragons. I'd like to see Mike do something smaller I think, more compact. If this was like 5" and under $40 I might nab one. He did stuff for "Magic" right? I forget, I only ask because I know a dude WAY into "Magic" and he has some of the art tattooed on him (mega nerd) so I'd want to introduce him to some of this stuff, seems up his alley.

he did a lot of stuff for Warcraft as well.

I think it's definitely his style. I don't care for how he is crouched a little, but I'll withhold my complete judgement until the finished product is out.

It's just too Dungeons and Dragons for me.
Too much going on. Too metal. Don't like the crouch or the big boots.

Too sharp and seemingly not having a tactile feel to it unlike other toys (Hedorahs, Bemons, Anraku etc).
I don't want to hold it or run my hands over it unlike previously mentioned toys.

But if you go gaga over Boogiemen or have a constant hardon for Pushead, I guess this is up your alley.

I also hate Bop dragons too.
Looks like a rip of Alien Chestbuster's head grafted onto an uninspired body.

I don't need every toy. I don't like every toy.
Happy enough with some KxP sculpts.

I don't get this argument. Just because it was apt for Dr. M doesn't mean it can't be apt for this toy as well. It's a useful way to quickly get to the point of how you feel about the toy.
Posting this video for the Hot Topic (which I associate with Spencer's) cameo, plus it's about zombies... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quj1U6tpPvM

to me, saying something is equated with spencer gifts just gives the implication that it is mass marketed to a wide audience rather than a niche market of toy collectors.

if you're going for the latter, it's a pretty good criticism if you ask me. i don't think it completely applies in my mind, but skulls and blacklights are big at spencers.

I don't see the comparison being aimed at the production of the toy - I, and I'm assuming others who have used the comparison, am using Spencer's as a way of describing the aesthetics of the toy. If I wanted to make a comparison to mass produced toys I'd use something like TRU instead of Spencer's. I definitely think this Sutfin toy is a niche toy, with Spencer's aesthetics.
If the body was completely resculpted it might still look "Spencer's", but it might also look good at the same time. The body is absolutely horrible, but the body isn't what makes it look "S". Regardless of whether the body is resculpted I won't be buying one - but I think for those on the fence a new body could make them more likely to buy it.

Hahaha, ok, so I think we're all clear now on this? I think comments may have cooled too if it wasn't for the number of "wait till you guys see it in person, than you'll LOVE IT" type remarks. There's quite a few.

First, I was quite drunk when I posted that reply.
Second, I think what I was getting at is using "Spencer's" is a total knee jerk piss easy comment.

Generally I'm just amazed at how much energy you guys are putting into defending how crap you think this is.
This thread is roughly 3 pages of "i don't like it/it doesn't do it for me." Great! Fantastic!
Personally, I am just excited for Mike that he is getting to see a drawing of his transformed into a full 3D toy. That must be exciting for any artist on so many levels. I want to follow this toy and keep up to date with it's progression.
So this is getting a bit old.
No one is asking any one to like it, and opinions have been adequately voiced, duly noted and considered by all relevant parties.

    Can we now move on?

There are toys people go bonkers for that I'm not that into or think that they are unimaginative, but I respect the excitement everyone has about that toy and not gonna clutter up an info thread with my whinging.

    That's my bit done.

    Hahahahaha!
It has more to do with the "You'll love it once you see it!" posts and TOYMINATOR X's overly-defensive comments which were pretty driving and abundant. I think our critiques ended long ago, it than became more of a validation of them because people kept going on about them. Also, the confusion of the major retail store added a bit to it.
PLEASE! YES! Again, I think we all know where everyone stands on this guy. No harm intended from the critics, at least me, just making conversation. My job sucks, what else am I supposed to do all day!?!?

When I say "quite" what I actually mean is - When I saw the post this morning, I had to check the time stamp as I don't recall making it and was curious what time I got in and went to sleep :)

    I know what you mean.
I do however enjoy my job.

This is a big problem I've developed long ago with the western "scene," and have discussed ad nauseum with a few people. I don't buy toys based on someones previous art or their art being realized as a toy, I buy toys. I actually wish the whole "insert whatever name here" scene of toys wasn't so artist "name" driven as it is.

    Carry on.

Oh no! I'm being sucked in... :(

Mike is a really cool guy, I fully expect at some point to share a pint with the man, so my interest in this is as a mate as much as a fan.

And this is in American Idols, and lots of shit goes on in this section of the board that wouldn't be allowed to go on anywhere else.

Right, that's it, I'm done. Promise this time :)

i actually think it's a somewhat cool toy, I was more discussing my thoughts on the meaning of what the "spencer" aspect was. i won't be buying one, but i can see the allure to some folks.

no need to get sucked in or defend your thoughts :D

Slam Spencer's as much as you want (because it really is a pretty lame store), but I still scored an 18" Number of the Beast Eddie there for like $20 back in the day and that figure RULES. I wanted so much to bring it back with me to Japan when we were in the US over Christmas but there just wasn't enough space. Now what's my 18" Alien supposed to fight?

As for this figure, I think the upper body rules. I really like the skull sculpt, I really like the arms. I don't like the bottom of the torso and legs, though. I can understand why it was made that way, but it just doesn't work for me. Looks a little H8 Graphix, a little like a NYC HxC kid doing the "pick up the change" thing on the front of a Victory Records comp. But hey, its still way better made than what I could do at this point, so hats off for that.

    i like spencers.
dc direct action figures ALWAYS wind up on the 90% rack after being shelf-warmers for many many months.
and if the spencers gift-ish slogan is "played out," you can always go with the carnival/small town county fair karney booth of high priced junk (flag montages of skulls/potleafs/pantera/etc, knock off zippos with skulls, broken ash trays with dragons, harley davidson temp. tatoos, etc. basically, like spencers, but lower on the food chain. waaaaay lower).

with that said, i really like this piece.
and the crouching thing could work, if you display him crawling out of a giant hallowed tree, or standing in the middle of a fog machine set on low and constantly going. it could work...

first test shots on this are gorgeous!
aside from a few minor production tweaks the figure is exact to what was at SDCC
after working our asses off we managed to do this entire figure in vinyl,

Thanks to Mike for a bad ass design and to the boys at Reckless toys for letting us play with this
regardless of all the various comments on this thread I think you really need to see the finished
peice in person before passing any final judgments.

    THanks
