Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. I think knowing the (all but brief) history and cultural reference points this guy's coming from helps my appreciation. Was really hoping for a little chunkier and smaller (GB/fight figure) proportions but this guy is more BxH scale and definitely of that ilk. Good luck to all at Restless!
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. Cats out of the bag..... great pics from the Reckless crew Great many more new things to come from them and we are stoked to lend our Sculpting chops to their amazing line up of projects so far. It is also a first for us, to have one of our sculpts be produced in Japan Thanks This piece very closely follows Mikes sketches of the character and definitely has the old school Twim, BXH vibe going and it is a really great size the skull and the finger thing gets used a lot but it looks cool and it is what it is I personally like Coop's figure, especially the smokey clear
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. I was thinking the same thing. Paint it black and it's in the same league as the Baseman thing they release last year, at best.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. This cracks me up, 'cause if this was made by some US company everyone would be bashing like there's no tomorrow. As for me, this would be a big "not". At least it doesn't have huge sneakers on.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. The way I see things, it's more than simply the production of the actual figure. The guys behind it were/are collectors first and foremost but had the balls to do what most Brainers only dream of doing with the Toypunks DVD and now Reckless Toys . . . they don't appear to be in it for the fast $$$ like the majority of US manufacturers. Like S7, Lulubell, Ultrapop and Grumble they seem to be following the Japanese boutique ethos of doing something they dig and trying to make a living from it. Unlike other retailers and manufacturers that seem to jump on the latest hot ticket just to make some quick, easy money without consideration for the POS they are producing or the guys that are buying it. I'll probably not be buying one 'cause it don't look like my kinda thing, but because of the history and credibility of all the guys involved (including Klim, Mike Giant and Hiddy) I'll be supporting it and wishing 'em well for future projects.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. umm, I will probably get one b/c Mike Giant is a great artist. That is what is appealing to me. The fact that it is Giant. And toy punks mascot. it is too hard to be objective on this one.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. I dig it overall, but the right hand just kills it for me. I wish they'd have either made the bat and the hand one piece, or made it so the bat slides into the hand, as a Boogie's weapon does. That thumb creeps me out.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. ^ Could have been much worst http://www.flickr.com/photos/lamoursupr ... 135816270/ Both are still cool tho !
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. haha, that's great. That was the first thing I ever posted on skullbrain waaaay back when. Jordan Vs are still my favorites although the Reckless kicks will definitely be more Hesh like Prolly stated.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. when is your reckless fig coming out LS? As far as skeleton toys go...this is pretty cool. But then again, so is Coop's.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. I love your character Joel! He sort of has a mutant Judge Dredd look about him.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. This reminds me of someone who wrote a letter to the Wire saying that they were selling out by having John Cage on the cover. If you're in for some quick, easy money, I don't think you'll open a designer toy store, be it Japanese or Western... All of them come from love... And let's not get started on the ethos of Japanese boutiques... (though I'd kind of like to, so please do spur me on)
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. While I cant disagree that most dedicated designer toy retailers likely wont make a quick buck selling toys, and nor will those manufacturers who are turning out small (sub 100) runs, the manu's who are turning out toys in the few 1000 range (and using them as cross selling tools for their lifestyle brand) are definitely making money. The obvious company being KR. So, as this figure was being (unjustly IMO) compared to typical Western vinyl - the point Andy makes above is valid. And while KR may have started out from the "love" perspective, churning out 1000's of mongers, labbits and other vinyl monstrosities indicates the current motives maybe more geared towards profit.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. I think it is a good 3d representation of his art, it is a toy (you can play with it), and it is being made in japan. The rest is a matter of taste.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. Who cares if they're making money or not, as long as the toy is good. You can make 10 pcs. of a shitty toy and be broke too. I'm not buying something if I think it sucks, simply because it was made with love. Not directed toward this toy, just the discussion.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. I don't get the middle finger thing at all. Maybe if I was 15. I just think that stuff comes across as a little weak. Do people in their late 20's/30's think seeing a toy is 'badass' or something? It's not a direct question for this toy but the myriad other toys out there. I do like the simplicity and clean lines of the sculpt. If this thing had different arms and/or maybe if they were both behind his back..I think it would have been stronger.
Re: Upcoming Japanese vinyl. the truth is I don't think anything Mike's art speaks to your regular Skullbrain member. Therefore I don't think the toy will either. This is an art toy and with that said like it a lot. It speaks to me and I want one. Hear me Justin & lance??? I WANT ONE! I'll even take a test shot if that's all you guys can up with. good job to wreckless!
