Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the 'Shin Sekai No Kaiju' book? Is it really hard to find? Tried using kanji for authors name on YJA but nothing came up (probably had it wrong) Image lifted from Toykarma blog:
I think it is pretty hard to find. I've been looking for one for a while now. There was a copy of the original SNK book on YJA for $150, but it was kind of beat up.
Here's "Sekaino Kaiju": 世界の怪獣 I see the book on YJA from time to time but it's very expensive. If it has an ISBN, you may want to try an Amazon JP used book search.
Thanks for the input guys. After getting some Shikaruna pieces my interest in some off the characters has really peaked. Too bad no one has reprinted this book- maybe add some color illustrations. I'll add this to my list of kaiju books I need- bullmark monster book, and the other new one.
I did some research this afternoon. I figured as much. I have Hyper Hobby Roman Album Dash 6 and it's chock full of pics and info. So I figured there were more. Thing is I'm trying to narrow it down to just sofubi (kaiju) alot of them (especially with the Hyper Hobby Roman albums) have robots and metal toys etc etc. Anyhow found some books/mag online. The Shen Sekai No Kaiju was just to see illustrations of characters I've grown to love through companies like Shikaruna.
Btw, there's actually two books by that author: Sekai no Kaiju and Shin Sekai no Kaiju. "Shin" means "new," so I guess it is supposed to be a sequel of sorts.
Ah ok...I've seen that one up a few times; and I think the first one too, but I also forgot to save the pic.
I'm hearing that Shikaruna Koubu is going to be reissuing one or both of the Sekaino Kaiju books, so you may want to save your money right now.
Thanks Rog, I figured when I saw the pics of what appeared to be brand new copies from the WF 47 pics. Can't wait. I'm more into kaiju/monster books than kaiju now. Well maybe not that much but close....
Yeah I saw the pics and what not of the Shikaruna reissues. Anyone see any for sale or know when they might be coming? Yes I'm impatient.
From what I've seen (from various auctions etc) the inside has only black and white illustrations. Kinda wish they skipped traditional and went full color with the Shik re-issue. These creatures definitely look better full on color like the covers.
I have two absolutely mint copies (with slipcases) of SHIN SEKAI-NO KAIJU, which I purchased as the now-defunct Goshado Books in San Francisco's Japantown about twenty years ago (I passed them up for years because they didn't feature TV or movie monsters). The pages are still bone-white, crisp with sharp corners. Minor shelf wear on the slipcases. These are absolutely the best quality copies I have ever seen of this particular title of all of the copies I have seen for sale in Japan since I lived their 23 years ago (many of the copies I have come across have a slight mold odor to them). Originally, I was going to sell one of them off in Japan -- for cash or trade -- but I will consider serious offers from outside of Japan. But, be warned, I will not be selling this one cheap because of the stellar condition of this book. Otherwise, I will be happy to keep both copies. It would be cool to see some of these stories contained in the book, translated in some form. Some of them would have made cool movies.
