I was honestly excited to hear he was teaming up with MJ because Danielle has a lot of MJ stuff that I actually really like, then I saw these..... Needless to say Danielle was also let down. We were excited that our two worlds could intersect. Oh well.
Oh I beg to differ. These are REALLY funny. and some of the fun (as always) is on kaws fans. How are these Kaws related? chomper teeth for trim and the "X X" eyes for bows. Fucking brilliant I think. The price tag only compliments the irony inherent in a street artist rising to this insanely absurd level of high fashion culture. these shoes are the best object kaws has put out all year. I wouldn't suggest anyone wear them to look good. but they'd be sweet on the shelf next to some of his toys.
I think I have to agree. If we're talking "subversive" (which is, if I'm not mistaken, what KAWS' original intent with the street art was) this fits far better with that mindset than a toy (especially his incredibly obvious SW homages). Toy collectors, hipsters et.al have to get past the fact that they are not the target audience for this. And speaking for myself, I like the pink and black combo.
These aren't any worse than the Chompers Nikes or Bapes but people spend absurd amounts of money on them without intellectualizing them first. Hell, OF, BAPE, Neighborhood, Colette, etc stuff is pretty on par with MJ prices. MJ has a new mouse shoe design practically every season, so it makes sense that this is the shoe that would be released. I've bought a few different designs- they're nice. Believe it or not, there are female Kaws fans out there and it's nice that he's expanding his market beyond the usual t-shirt, sweatshirt, jeans, jacket. I'm sure they'll sell out, but it will be interesting to see if they will command as much as sneakers in the after market.
I used to really like Kaws, still respect him, but how long can the one trick pony ride around the ring? .......X X ....... ' ' .....uuuu
Yah if you beat it to death . I personally cant stand anything Kaws does and dont understand the hype.
I am all behind the idea of these, even though KAWS is quite overrated in my opinion, but ultimately they are just not very well designed. Both the eyes and the chomperesque teeth ribbing look really tacked on, and black and pink... really? They would be much more attractive just as a simple pair of flats with a bow detail. These would be a more appropriate Hot Topic collab in my opinion and are beneath the Marc Jacobs label, who CAN do a cute job using character design. I would much rather see my (theoretical) hipster girlfriend in these MJ hampster shoes. Kaws should stick with Be@rbricks as far as I am concerned.
