Just out of curiosity...if I were to comment on how boring the design of this is, how I'd seen it before, and how it did nothing for me, you'd defend my "right" to share my opinion on your work?

ABSOLUTELY! And that's the gods honest truth. It's YOUR opinion man. It aint like your trying to pass a law declaring that my work is this and that and that it should be banned. I've been into art and have been an artist long enough ( more than I care to admit) to know that not everyone will like my work. It's part of life as an artist and I have absolutely no problem with that. If I did not believe that, I don't think I'd be here making toys today. When I thought about letting skullbrain know about my Robot figure I was EXPECTING a shredding because I know how passionate alot of the boardmembers are about Japanese vinyl and what they thought of western vinyl. But I did it anyway because I knew any answer I was gonna get was an honest one. That's one of the reasons I like these Goofballs. Good or bad I was prepared to take it all in and LEARN....That's how you get better at this crazy arse way of life.....savvy? So endeth the sermon..

At least you're consistant. I guess my view is that just because one CAN say something negative, doesn't mean they should. I realize when you put something out there for consumption then ask for a critique, you accept the bad with the good. But in the other case, a S7 rep posted a message on the S7 board, about a show they're sponsoring, and people start critiqueing the art before even going to the show. That doesn't seem right. If I'm the artist (who I belive the poster you labelled a "crybaby" was), I'm thinking that's a shitty welcome. I have to wonder if the same people that opine about an artist on a bbs would approach that same artist at his/her show to share that same opinion...

doubtful. I also doubt peopel really want to hear negative opinions about their work or maybe I should post in the customs forum more often.

Well I for one liked the art in question. The thing that got me with the new guys post was his response to a negative comment. I mean there was just alot mo betta way to have responded than an all out attack. I doubt if the bad comment about the art was personal but the response of the new member clearly was. My response would have been to make the person that made the negative comment about my art alaborate more on why he/she felt that way. This usually is a great way to show others if the commentator was just spouting hate or had a valid opinion. I really hope that the new guy was not the actual artist. An union skinned artist will not survive long in this line of work. If all I wanted was positive comments about my work I'll go to my friends and relatives :)

Oh and about the shitty welcome. It's kinda hard to give someone new a warm welcome when one of two initial posts has "Your a jerk" in the first sentence. :D sorry

Yeah, I'm a total newb and I just saw this thread... But I've gotta say, I REALLY like the toy. I'm a huge robot fan (and a fan of huge robots) and I definitely want this.

Looking forward to more process pics and background info... it's nice getting a peek behind the curtain.

That's my point. The artist didn't show up saying "look at my art and tell me what you think". It was a S7 thread started by S7 about an art show they are having. I just think it was the wrong forum in which to bash his art (I know you didn't bash his art, but your reaction to him being offended left something to be desired). Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Well I'm no celeb or anything like that. no corporate job for sure but art is how I have been doing my living aswell. One form or another I've been in it for about 18 (I feel old) years. And I must say I'm doing OK.
I'm not defending the said "bad comment". I just think that as a proffesional artist that has done this for xx amount of years and has heard every comment under the sun and in a public forum for everyone to see that you be the bigger man, kept cool, come up with a clever come back and come out the classier dude :D

This is my last word on this matter. I think your art is fantastic and S7 showing your art is great. I hope you enjoy great sucess in all your artistic endeavors. :)

Please lets relax......... I only made a comment about the style of how the art is painted, not of you or subject matter or your abilities. I wasn't trying to look like a big shot or make you feel bad..... Give me a break......... I was only comparing your "style" with others that have already been there and done that. I too have been in this industry for many, many years and I have worked independently as a freelance artist, and for many corporate companies doing all kinds of styles of illustration, animation, paintings, etc. I have seen many artistic styles that have become popular over the years and then every artist under the sun copies the look, technique, etc. In my opinion, this 1940's jazz influnced style has become very over saturated in the art world today and it becomes difficult to tell one artist from the next. That is very sad in my opinion...... As far as this style goes, I feel that instead of copying a look, the artists should try and raise the bar and create something new, take this style of art in a new direction...... not create what has already been done. Take for example Tim Biskup, he is obviously influnced by this era of art, but he has taken it and pushed the style into something of his own. Just look at his last show at Billy Shire Fine Art, his art has gone beyond this "Jazz" style that you and every other artist you see in magazines such as Juxtapoz, copies and immitates.

I don't feel that I kept pushing you..... I am still trying to figure out how I did that......... I never said anything bad about you or your art.... I was just talking about style. And for someone who thought my art "sucked" so bad, I wonder why you visited my blog over 16 times yesterday. You stated that the art was bad, but you kept going back.......

I have worked my ass off to get to a point with my art to where I am able to work under the corporate umbrella and I really like it here. There is no need to worry about where the next job comes from, how I am going to pay for health insurance, 401k, etc. I would never go back to where I was before as an artist..... working freelance, trying to get into galleries, etc....... there was too much time focused on figuring out the business end of it and where the next paycheck is going to come from and not enough time focusing on creating the art I enjoy so much.

I congratulate you for surving 13 whole years as an independent artist, it can be a difficult thing to do. But what happens when your style goes the way of the Bernie Fuchs's or the Bob Peak's in the world of art? Do you have a style or skill to support that? or do you have to wait another 20 years for it to become retro and popular again.

It is unfortunate that this got so blown out of proportion........ I am really embarrassed that it did. Next time I will not state an opinion and I will not say anything at all. I thought we were all adults here......... I would hate to offend another person to where it gets to the point that this did....... that would be horrible. At least I can be happy that I did not drop to the level of having to call anyone names.

If anyone wants to discuss this further send me a PM and lets not waste the space and the time of the messageboard.
