Reminds me of that Peter Kay bit about southern chip shops .... Gravy? THEY DON'T DO GRAVY!! ... Mushy peas? THEY DON'T DO MUSHY PEAS!!

Personally i prefer only Salt, Vinegar and Red / Brown Sauce (Or both) and maybe, if you're feeling adventurous ... Mayonnaise.

Anyone who slops Curry Sauce, Gravy or Mushy peas on their chips is a filthy animal

 

Agree!! Being on the Scottish east coast it’s all about having only salt and sauce (and by sauce I mean chippy sauce - which is brown sauce mixed with vinegar and water and is so much more than the sum of its parts!!)

 

Gotta make that sauce go as far as possible, money doesn't grow on trees.

My daughter is on an elimination diet for allergies and is restricted from soy products. Just got this teriyaki sauce in to try. She's a picky eater, but hoping it's a winner!

 

I like a lot of what Peter Kay does but he got that part wrong! I have never been into a fish and chip shop down South that hasn’t had mushy peas!

As for chips, I’m throwing in a vote for just plain salt and vinegar! There is nothing like a batch of freshly served chips, crisp out of the fryer, lashed in malt vinegar and salt… even better still, put them in a fresh buttered crusty roll! Chip butty - woohoo!

 

To be fair to Mr. Kay, he's probably talking about 30 years ago or so. I certainly don't remember peas or gravy in west country chippies back in the day. They did have Styrofoam pots of Curry sauce with powdery lumps, but that was about it.

Now you're talking! Lovely stuff.

 

At our old chippy it was all about the free crispy bits and a pickled egg.
Chips wise these days i love with gravy or curry sauce , but nowt beats plain old salt and vinegar
