First, sorry for using a live auction screen grab, but this is kinda hinky, as in too good to be true. The product is a vinyl cookie zilla. Previously I have only seen resins by G. Marquez. Thing looks beautiful but the wording of the title makes me wonder if it is some kind of spendy pre-order. Marquez isn't mentioned and there is very little info on the header in the other pix and certainly no licensing from either Toho or CTW (Disney now?). Anybody have info?

Yes, real maker. Akametenshi is the maker. The lotto sales are made thru IG Kuangrenhui. The one in the photo is the middle size "baby cookie monster" gid version and was offer as a lottery on March 3, 2023. The original retail for it was $360 + shipping worldwide included. There is also a standard size version. You can follow both Akametenshi and Kuangrenhui IG for releases.

    G. Marquez passed away recently. I don't think Akametenshi ever credited him on the figure, and it's unclear/undisclosed if he made the figure in partnership with him or just copied it. Probably copied it.

Dang, if he did just copy it, I can’t help but feel that’s kind of wrong...

I can't find it right now but there is another person on eBay selling Cookiezillas that IIRC are made in Mexico. When I find one I will post it.

Who was the very first person to do a mashup between Cookie Monster and Godzilla?

I believe it was the same Gabriel Marquez who was noted earlier. I think the first was a converted Shin Godzilla X-Plus model which Akametenshi owns (if not the original, another copy made by Marquez). You can see it on the top shelf in this photo:

I don't know if Gabriel was ever properly accredited by Akametenshi.

Every time I see a Shincookie I think about how
Akametenshi built a whole business off of piece riding Gabriel Marquez and charging $400 a pop. I’ve never seen Akametenshi credit GM even when I’ve tried to speak to him about it…

Such a nice piece but too many conflicts. Can imagine both Jim Henson and Gabriel Marquez beseeching the Toy Gods for revenge. Will prolly pass on this unless there is some resolution. Hate lotteries anyway.

I just want to know how much money you have to spend promoting your posts to get 125k followers, especially in the sofubi space.

I remember thinking when the Gabriel Marquez sculpture appeared in 2018 that it wasn't the first time someone mashed up the two characters like that. I did find this illustration from 2016, before Shin Godzilla came out:

I also found this sculpture from 2017:

To clarify, I am not trying to say anything negative about Marquez or his legacy, I'm just trying to figure out when the meme of mashing up the two characters may have gotten started.

Woah... what? I didn't realize he had accumulated that many followers... most probably running promotions at top dollar to be seeing those kind of numbers.

Anyway... no offense to Gabriel (I feel indifferent about his work), but taking two pop culture icons and mashing them together is far from revolutionary and, at this point in the designer toy game, an extremely tired effort.

EDIT: I find the blatant use of Godzilla’s likeness at his level of output to be a greater offense. There’s a lot of small makers who play by the book just to obtain a one-day license from Toho and who’ve been in the game a lot longer than he has and aren’t making nearly as much. They’re arguably producing better products too. I won’t deny he has some talent, but I think he could better use his abilities to create something truly original for once.

Ah yes, I did see @JoeMan mention that. My apologies for any confusion or improper wording.

Honestly... if anyone really wants one of his figures I'd say just keep entering lotteries. They retail about half of (sold) auction prices and he's been releasing so many figures I think odds of winning are probably fair. I follow him on IG and I feel like I see a lottery announcement every week... could be less than that but he's definitely picked up production substantially since he started.

Full disclosure, I own a couple of his older releases (one Shin Desu and a Baby Desu). The quality is OK but definitely not identical to any Japanese soft vinyl I own. They're a bit more rubbery, less rigid, and they have a particular, slightly unpleasant odor I've smelled before on toys I played with as a child. He pulls all of his own vinyl in Singapore. I don't know what sort of formula he's using or where he's sourcing raw materials. I do know he's taken a factory tour with the president of Marmit so maybe he learned about the process from him.

I saw pics of this and thought it was a joke... kind of a weird mashup.

What's even more weird are the guys on instagram pretending to be the maker. Like I'm drooling over Marusan not a cookie monster lol. That said the guy does make some cool stuff.
