This was out and about at DCon this past weekend, and also very special to me. A little backstory: I was recently hired by Mondo to shoot the remainder of their Toho soft vinyl line(three Goji, three Hedorah). Workin’ closely with the couple of Mondo peeps I have, has been a fantastic experience. Great dudes and I’m sincerely appreciative for their appreciation towards my photo centric obsession with toys.

Come DCon I got some time to step away from the booth to walk the floor. I just happened to stumble upon Mondo’s booth, and bared witness to one of my photos blown up like crazy on their canvas surrounding the booth. I stopped dead in the middle of the floor and my eyes just widened. I couldn’t believe a photo I took was on such a grandiose display(grandiose to me, anyway). Then walkin’ up to the booth I also saw the mini printed cards that were free to anyone that wanted one. I only took two of each, and wish I’d grabbed more. One of the Mondo dudes happily saw my excitement and said he wanted it to be a surprise, and holy shit, was it ever. Extremely thankful for how kind and awesome Mondo has been with me.

This is the *only* photo I took the entire weekend, and it was with my phone.

[IMG] What I saw at the bottom of my hill. Deep skid marks on the road before the truck flipped over. Only saw police and fire engines, so hopefully no one was hurt. Thank goodness the truck didn't smash into the building. People inside could have been hurt! Really came close to smashing into the garage. Construction rubble was literally touching the garage door.

Nope! Sadly I don’t know the name of the artist, but sometimes I’ll go out of my way to look at it as I drive by.

    Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA.

Sunday, die-off of smaller fish - yellowfin gobys and smelt - began. Larger fish, dozens of resident but rarely-seen bat rays, small young (6" 'wingspan') to large (3' 'wingspan') adults, searching for water with oxygen, gasping for 'air'.

Monday, massive die-off: death everywhere. No living bat rays; hundreds of dead striped bass, a scant few gasping for 'air', suffering their final moments. 10,000s of dead smaller fish, the gobys and smelt. Dead halibut and dead sturgeon, which is fairly incredible given their natural habitat, offshore deepwater.

A tragedy of near-undefinable proportion; nothing similar ever before experienced in the known history of the life of that body of water. First national wildlife refuge in the US, designated 150+ years ago, a global hallmark of preservation and conservation.

So sad. What happened, was the lake cut off from the ocean somehow and the fish couldn't migrate?

The press have it partially correct, but not entirely. The major driver, first and foremost, human ignorance re fossil foolishness.
Climate crisis catalyzing severe drought in California (and many, many other places on the planet), Central Valley farmers pushing more reservoir h2o through irrigation, and increasing fertilizers in the irrigated h20. Nitrate and phosphate-rich fertilizers outflowing from the Sacramento Delta into the bay, feeding the blooms, and uh-oh, here we go. Pacific Ocean was much cooler earlier this summer than the previous ten-or-so year's record-setting warms. Appx three weeks ago, water temps hiked ~5degrees within a couple of daze. Less overcast during the same period. Hot water, hot sun, feeding the already-present algal blooms, that fncked up wastewater outflow already present, and BOOM: massive die-off around the Bay Area the past few daze and likely to increase. Tragic. Today, intense putrification: Lake Merritt, a marine graveyard.

This piece explains algal blooms fairly well and concisely: https://www.sjrwmd.com/education/algae/#why-do-algal-blooms-occur

    Deep shit: https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/e...problem-what-is-it-and-how-can-it-affect-you/

The part of Earth's circulatory system that is the Atlantic Ocean's in grave danger, partly due to what's detailed ^above, and moreso even due to rapid introduction of cold water from melting sea ice from above the Arctic Circle near the North Pole and melting land ice from Greenland, and, of course, all of the other elements of rapidly amplifying positive feedback looping climate crisis that we already have some grasp of and others that we're just beginning to grok. Deep, deep, dangerous shit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anoxic_event

Tho don't wish to harsh anyone's mellow, the impact of the Lake Merritt tragedy weighs heavy here.
    Images from today:
The big fish are striped bass. Spoke today with a fisherman, Joe, 14 years of experience fishing around the Bay from boat and shore, including from a footbridge at Lake Merritt; deep knowledge base. He said, he'd love to catch a striper as large the dead one laying on the walkway. Said, when he realized what was beginning on Sunday, scooped bucketloads of fish from around his marina and ferryed them via his boat and released them in safe, clean water elsewhere in the bay. Small rescue contribution relative to the amount of death, however every bit, great and small, helps all creatures.

The small silver fish, anchovies and young jack smelt. 10,000s of dead anchovy and jacks, perhaps more than 100,000 in the lake. The same scene, elsewhere around the bay. 552 dead stripers counted in just 1/4 mile of shoreline at the lake yesterday. The white streaks, flow of putrification, from the bloat and breakdown of the big fish. Yesterday, few floaters. Today, surface of the lake littered with dead stripers, bloating, floating. Not just fish: marine worms, bivalves and other marine invertebrates, massive die-offs. Other parts of the bay, dead sturgeon onshore, which is incredible given their habitat and hardiness: deep water, prehistoric, slooow metabolism, need little oxygen. Fortunately, pelicans, gulls and cormorants are savvy to what's unhealthy and were spitting out dead stuff, not swallowing. All of the egrets and herons, out of the water, up in trees along the lake or completely departed and roosting in their downtown Oakland rookeries. Zero herons or egrets in the water today.

Ok, definitely nuff said here. If anyone's interested in more info, especially regarding the incredibly positive future - I'm not interested in promoting gloom-and-doom, that's not the vision I have of our shared near-future here on Earth - contact me via private message for directions to upcoming media and other info that maybe of interest. And please, take care, love yourself, your family, your neighbor, your toys and our planet. = )

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

"The last year of living in America has felt like living in a badly-written, dystopian science fiction novel.
Now it's turned into a full-blown horror movie, and, so, I think somehow this show is, you know, our attempt at making sense of that."

Poor Hubbee has a severe URI with fever. Had to take him to the vets three times this week, and he is finally responding to the latest meds. Waiting at the beach (the vets office is 2 blocks away), while he is being treated and made ready for pick up, reminds me why I love living on the coast!
