@zindabad It’s great to see real Kougais come back like this. New paints, no matter where they pop up, be it Jose, YJA, whatever; it’s a pretty exciting prospect!
Wow, even higher than the OG GID that ended the same day! But at least these are good old fashion public auctions
Pardon my ignorance... is that an earlier release (maybe a one-off)? Perhaps the included poster provides the answer but my knowledge of Bemon history is lacking. The paint on the head seems to have been applied a lot more casually than others I've seen where a brush on technique was used (particularly the top of the head).
It definitely looks better in the IG photos, just not my favorite... but one Kougai Kaiju is definitely better than none.
Yes, the first few batches/runs of Bemon Kougai were all hand-painted one-offs (now abbreviated to HP) and included a poster where you could see each one-off on the sheet. The brush paint style is very noticeable especially on the sludge drips on the back of the head as you have picked up on already. I believe the third batch was all on glow vinyl which this one at auction was from. The HP were not made in large numbers and are very rare.
Thanks for the info! I thought that might be the case based on the little I know but wasn't certain. That would definitely explain the price tag (4th highest bid for a Kougai Kaiju on Y!JA in the last 5 years—found using the term "bemon"). I actually don't mind the drips on the back, it's the "chemical leak" on top I think looks a bit too sloppy. The paint application is otherwise quite nice.
I love those shitty, sloppy, blops of paint that exude sludge from the smoke stacks and drains. If some indie customizer did this they’d probably get verbally shanked, but it’s so acceptable by Bemon ‘cause, as far as I can tell, he’s really the first one to stylize it like that. And I think it fits really well to the textures, while serving purpose to the sculpt. This type of painting has also carried over into some of my favorite early Grody Shogun, too, though I can’t say if Luke was directly or indirectly inspired by Honda.
^ "Verbally shanked," ha! Love it. Is that something people say or is it your spin on the concept? Perfect either way.
@toothaction I was simply gonna use “stabbed” but I’m pretty sure that’d never happen over a custom paint. Someone could prove me wrong. *I* could prove me wrong!
Thank you for sharing, and goddammit I had a feeling I didn't get the proper header with my space monster. Some collectors are fucking animals. Oh well, toy is still cool.
I got the garamon tribute colorway but it came with a blue header that had the kougai and smogun on it.
The Garamon tribute colorway is the only one I don't have pictures of with header. But green one, red one, black one, white one,, they all have the same type of header, si I guess the blue one should alos have the same header.
