And where do his plants come from? Are these not clones/offshoots of many artists genuine 20 year journey breeding these plants? He thinks he can just take their work and resell it as his own for money? For money!

It’s great that I haven’t bought any sofubi in a good while but the scene still constantly finds new ways to be amusing. We all hate flippers but maybe flipping these toys should receive an automatic pass from the community just for the lulz.

Great deal right now on his 2,000,000 yen sofubi coffins for burying your sofubi toys right alongside you. I went with the glow in the dark version.

So after a quick read, some guy wants way to much to enter one of his lottos, and will sue you if you resell it.

    Challenge accepted.

Where do I begin? I’m assuming on IG.
Can someone pass along his info.

    Time to get flamed.

A maker comes out and says his toys aren't for flipping, whales shouldn't feel pressure to own every toy or pride in enabling flippers, and there will be regular large runs of the basic figures to make sure all fans can get one.

Sure his methods are by turns invasive, ineffective and laughable. The posts are often self-important. But he's saying good stuff and he's entertainingly dramatic? I see nothing wrong with that.

At the end of the day he's echoing sentiments people have had on these boards for years and years, and actually acting on them.

Fucked up to go to other makers with the names of collectors who certifiably haven't flipped shit though. That wasn't on.

If you use the term “flip” then you’ve disqualified yourself. I’m sorry but I am so over people acting like babies over toys. You don’t like selling stuff then don’t sell it. When you make something and sell for personal gain in a capitalist society then you are entering into a contract with the buyer. Their money and possession are not yours. These asinine moral sentiments are ridiculous. It isn’t your or anyone’s place to tell people they can’t sell their own possessions. Attempting to do so or making some kind is wanker moral sentiment of it is way worse than someone reselling their own stuff. Get a grip

Also, many of the same people on these boards who cry “flipper” are the same people selling toys all over the internet. So easy to see. Where did all those hxs that hit eBay come from? Hmmm? Not flipping because some ridiculous notion of time? Yeah, selling a collection for 30k. I don’t give a crap what people do with their things bc

Just my take but personally I think there is something about the flow of time. If you buy something only to resell it straight away I class it as flipping (and stealing the opportunity for those who genuinely wanted the toy at release). If you keep it then decide to resell afterwards then at least it wasn’t purchased originally with the intent of resale, you just graduated from its hold on you.

If you resell an older (as in not week one of release) sought after toy but avoid the current going price then you are either a) being a solid friend to a fellow collector or b) an idiot. Essentially what I’m saying is that the idea of flipping is instant returns for a fresh purchase, at least in my eyes. I’ve been lucky to get rid of toys for retail and sometimes less just because the interest isn’t there but I don’t begrudge those who turn a profit from something they no longer identify with. Bit of an extreme example but this is why no one rages at vintage toy prices despite them being higher than retail in the 1966 or whatever; the owners moved on, the toy is less available then when initially released, it has value and therefore the pricepoint is justifiable.

Oh I absolutely agree with the entertaining part - it's the guy's pathos & misguided zeal that makes this so funny to me. I'm just a cynical bastard who's mildly doubtful of the power of shiny stickers.

Rentaro is an absolute faker and not worthy of this attention. His toys are hyped merely by the market forces he is pretending to fight against.

Here is how this works: He creates a sticker that if peeled off leaves a trace. HE IS NOW CHARGING THE PRICE OF THE STICKERS TO THE CUSTOMERS PURCHASING THE TOYS. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!

This guy is a just a poser. Check back in 3-4 years and see if he has anything new or interesting once the market is saturated with this toy.

I just saw his website and the whole sticker thing.
For anyone who doesn’t know, it looks like the sticker is meant to be placed on the toy. If you try and remove the sticker, it leaves behind a permanent honeycomb pattern.
What is stopping people from just leaving the sticker on, and just reselling it like that? Is his intention to lower the desirability in the aftermarket by having a sticker on it in the first place? Unless it was on the foot where it usually isn’t visible, I wouldn’t want a sticker on my toy.

This is just all very bizarre to me. I’m not really seeing how any of this is a deterrent for flipping. And I just don’t understand his demonization of all reselling. Not everyone can afford to keep their toys forever. Is his head too far up his ass to see that?

Yeah, mirroring the sentiments already expressed, discouraging buying to flip is one thing, that is beyond reasonable and I completely agree that is essentially stealing from the artist, but this you’re entering into a life contract with the toy or you’ll be blacklisted by the artist and possibly penalized in some way (which is crap) is very unrealistic when no one knows what life is going to throw at you or where your interests will turn, you just have to have faith that it goes on to someone else who appreciates it instead of the garbage. The self-righteousness is a bit too much for me with this one and I don’t think buyers are really thinking what his actions say about how he feels about them either. You need to fund your stage 3 cancer treatment? Too bad, you sold my toy, I’m coming after you (even tho we know he can’t). It’s cool people are getting toys they like I guess, but all I see is another self-inflated artist taking advantage of collectors in his own warped way. Not that he doesn’t have creative merit, and kudos on movement , and toys people dig, but the man needs some peace, needs to breathe more or something, your collectors aren’t your enemies man. The artist ego’s a beetch… Yeeaah, and this sticker thing now , and I have some sofubi in my collection with stickers on them but it sounds like his purpose is for possible self sabotage? Am I getting this right? It’s not just for identification of this is an official toy?.. Man, I feel for this guy’s collectors.

Yep, this just reeks of self importance and self promotion. Its either a very cynical move to stir-up hype, or he's a control freak with an ego problem.
