Rather than deal with the issues of unfulfilled subscriptions and Ranx pre-orders, Heavy Metal CEO Matthew Medney decided to block me on IG when I called him out on it instead of righting his sinking ship. As someone who really loved the magazine when I first came to start reading it (early/mid 90's, we can't all have our formative years be the best years, haha), this is extremely disappointing.

Anyways, I suppose HM will not be getting any more money from me, for what it's worth.

I haven't read it in years but I used to love it. I never understood why they didn't go with the more acurate translation of the title though, 'Screaming Metal' is so much better. Honesty didn't know it was still going ...

I missed that pre order. Hope it will arrive sometime soon.
I remember discovering Ranx. I think it was the first ‘adult’ comics I read, or at least the one that played a pivotal role in me getting interested in comics not meant for kids. I was drawing Ranx everywhere.
I’ll have to look for a copy.

I agree, Screaming Metal would have been a cooler title. Maybe they thought English readers would connect more with a familiar term like "heavy metal." They are still around, although they are way past their heyday. Even Grant Morrison was the EIC for a while. But yeah, here's hoping Ranx arrives someday soon. They say they are going to print this fall. The preorder is from... 2019? Don't hold your breath!

I'm back in the Hanselmann fold. After reading his first two collections and loving them, i've since been ignoring his output because i had other fish to fry, but i'm back. I bought 'One More Year' and i haven't laughed so much in ages. The story where they go to a water park and Werewolf Jones accidentally takes a ton of viagra, then spends the rest of the story making a tent out of his thong was hilarious! His two sons mugging the patrons so they can buy ice cream!

I've ordered 'Bad Gateway' from a local shop and i'm looking to buy 'Seeds and Stems' and 'Crisis Zone' ...

Use the code EXTRA30 and Enids can be had for $34 and Andys for $32. Yep.

Unrelated: I'm jealous that you get to read all that Hanselmann for the first time, @The Moog! Laughter and tears to ensue.

Any info on b/w comics by artists who are kind of Justin Green or Jack Chick looking? There's one I'm looking for, and of course, cannot remember name or title. Sickly "teen cop show" plot and characters, adult, and vaguely social crit. type stuff. It came and went, found it by accident and lost during a house move. This post shows why I'm a terrible collector...

it’s such an big and heavy book, I can’t find a comfortable position to read it… still totally worth it. Absolutely love everything about it.

Yeah, I should be sharing snaps and commentary about the epic amount of flops and collections I import to the compound every month, or commenting more on the other shares that happen in this thread, but here I am, shilling once more for the same damn publishing house...

In case you all hadn't heard yet, Fanta's shifted their annual November sale to... Now! The Black Friday weekend - 30% off and free ship on their holiday gift guide titles - is underway as I type...

...and the 15th brings the ersatz Cyber Monday sale: 40% off and free ship on everything but subscriptions and gift cards.

I went to a new comic book store and followed the advices of one of the employee. First time I’m doing that in a very long time. And I almost never read super hero comics (what I know best is Belgo-French, indie North American and Japanese comics).
Anyway, thanks to this, I got to discover Mister Miracle. What a trip! Inspired by the state of the world since 2016 and multiple panic attacks, it s anxiety inducing in the best way possible.
If you guys know of other super hero stories that are that good, I’m all hears.

Then I also got my Skin Crawl this weekend. Both black and white and colored edition look great, I think it’s a very worthy addition to anyones library.

^ I'm sure I can come up with a longer list for you, but before I forget: Same fella that wrote Mister Miracle had an earlier series called (and about) The Vision that I thought was quite excellent. Enjoyed it a good bit more than MM, actually!

While I'm here... don't forget, today's the day to get massive deals over at Fanta HQ. Said deals turn into a pumpkin once midnight hits Seattle.

To Brits of a certain age, there is only one comic! . . . so I was stoked to pick up this Anniversary edition from 2017 with a signed Jock cover at the w/e!

True, plus maybe some translated European stuff like Tintin, Asterix and The Smurfs. Then later, Deadline/Tank Girl. But yeah, 2000ad always towered over everything. I still have all my Titan reprints and Daily Star collections.

Thanks @toothaction for reminding us of Fanta sales! I got some readings for those longer nights coming up.

I’ll make sure to check The Vision too.

@Anti Social Andy Is there a particular album from 2000AD you would recommend? I had a couple of ABC Warriors volumes but that is about what I know.

Nemesis the Warlock and Robohunter are my fav 2000ad strips. But any early Dredd is gold too.

Personal faves would be any Judge Dredd by Carlos Ezquerra, but especially the 'Apocalypse War'. Anything Brian Bolland is involved with. Anything with Alan Moore, of course (D.R. and Quinch is an all time fave).

Nemesis the Warlock is a classic. Strontium Dog ... there's so much to choose from.

We named my boy Joe after Dredd so I'm biased!

I'd go chronologically and start with the Dredd Case Files 01 (as the collated reprints are called) and see how they float your boat. Working through the character evolution and theme-setting as originally intended.

Alternatively, a 'scattergun' approach checking out the randomness of Flesh, Future Shocks, Harlem Heroes and Invasion might be a cool insight, although I doubt they will give you the same warm fuzzies they did to pre teen me!

Thanks for the Dredd suggestions. I haven't done much comic reading for a long time, but took the plunge with the Fist of the North Star recommendation in the manga thread. Just started the second book of that and I was thinking it felt very 2000AD. Next purchase will be the Dredd Case Files.

Oh yeah, forgot about that one. Loved it. A futuristic sport, where Football, Boxing, Martial Arts and Basketball are all rolled into one. WITH JETPACKS!

I don't recall seeing a Titan reprint of that one back in the day, but I assume there must of been ...

I don't believe so. The Titan reprints mostly covered the major players. I think a lot of the more obscure stuff only got released after Rebellion took the show over.

As an American who came into 2000AD as an adult, here's what I can recommend! Mind you, this list is probably more Pat Mills heavy than others' lists. I have still to read any Judge Dredd, somewhat put off by the seemingly overwhelming continuity.

    1. Nemesis the Warlock - alien chaos magick fighting human fascism across the universe and dimensions, with excellent input by Talbot, O'Neill, Hinkleton, Henry Flint, and more. My personal favorite 2000AD tale of all time.
    2. Slaine - pagan Celtic warrior making a mess all around the early UK, crescendos with Bisley's stunning Horned God run in the early 90's. Haven't read any since, don't intend to.
    3. Shakara - If you took Ministry's "Just One Fix" and mixed it genetically with Star Wars, you might get this; a roller-coaster of insane ideas thrown at you in dazzling speed, all while building to a pretty cool narrative. Sci-fi insanity peak comics.
    4. Indigo Prime - might have to hunt around a little, but the early John Smith stuff is mind-bendingly brilliant, Invisible and Matrix and metaversal before anyone cared. You would be wise to peek through his bibliography for some surrealist, dizzy fun; highlights include Revere and Firekind,
    5. Bad Company - classic sci-fi Apocalypse Now war comics by the sharp-witted Milligan with sharp angles by Bret Ewins. It gets weaker the further you go into it, but the first two stories are absolute magic.
    6. ABC Warriors/Robusters: classic Robusters are a delight of gee-whiz excitement or Robots in all kinds of crazy situations! It evolves into some poignant commentary paired with great art by today's classics. ABC Warriors early stories are great although I got off with Black Hole and never went back.

If you want further recommendations, The Simping Detective, Sooner or Later, and Necronauts are all short and sweet.
EDIT: I could keep going but I do have some things to do, but 2000AD is great.

Thanks guys, I’ll check those out.

@hellscrape Patt Mills is great! I read Slaine and ABC Warrior and probably others that don’t come to mind right now.

I hold of on the new edition of Fist of the North Star after reading a bad review somewhere concerning the translation. You guys makes me think I could give it a try. When I was a kid, I was watching the anime every weekend in the morning. We couldn’t imagine this now, Fist of the North Star and all those head exploding with your cereals…
