As I write this, Instagram and Facebook are both down. I can only assume/hope the causes are nefarious based on the recent WSJ article and the FB whistleblower. I haven't been on FB since 2009 and whenever I see it, it's unrecognizable to me now. I am a sucker for IG but I only follow toy/art related people. I feel like I would miss out on a ton of releases if I wasn't on there and I do love seeing people's toy posts and connecting with collectors. I have no intention of letting my kids near either of FB or Instagram for as long as I possibly can. Makes me appreciate this community so much more. We don't always get along but we self regulate and things don't get out of control like they do on social media. I wish we could live in a world without FB and Instagram.
I clicked this thread thinking it would be about this mind-blowing breakthrough, but I’ll take both FB getting fucked and the stage being set to be able to synthesize starches (for human/animal consumption) from CO2 gas, sure.
At least 3/4 hours now - WhatsApp is down as well. Wouldnt mind if they stayed down to be quite frank!
11am East time I think. It is still down here. Between the revelation from the whistleblower on Washington Post and Last Week Tonight main story on Teflon, it looks like a revolution is certainly necessary. I hope that it was a reaction to it too. In any case, the synchronicity hasn’t been missed by anyone and people who didn’t know now know. (I think they are both related in so far as those are two stories about major corporations choosing profit over life in ways that affects the entire world and do so KNOWINGLY, with our governments (wherever you’re from) seemingly incapable to do anything about it). I hope one day we ll move the discourse away from climate change to the need of humans to clean up their mess, whether it’s psychic mess (nurtured and increased by the like of FB) or material (like Teflon, our plastic issue our cheap clothing issue or you know, any of our mass consumption and programmed quicker life cycle and so called ‘convenience’ related issues). That was my lil rant on our civilisation race towards collapse, forcing everyone and everything to go down with it. I’ll stop. I know it’s difficult to take in how much we are actually in trouble, and still live our lives. Cheers to all of us who try!
Yup. Been out here for a few hours as well (Germany) what I dislike about this is the fact that fb has become the internet for so many countries and communities. If there isn’t something that can replace it and support those missions, then axing it is going to take a few great things down the drain with it. It is also the one platform where all my friends and fam around the globe happen to be available. For a lot of the global south, it is almost essential as a media tool
We can. It's not as hard as you think. I will admit it was hard for me to actually deleted my IG, but once done it was done and it felt good. I will also admit that I wish there was a non-Zuckerberg version of IG - I would probably hop back in if it wasn't owned by a total asshat.
You're absolutely correct, I should probably just delete my account for the ethical concerns alone. But what if I miss a @Fig Belly drop??? I could always just check the website every Friday at 10 a.m. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/10/04/business/news-business-stock-market#facebook-down Two members of its security team, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said it was unlikely that a cyberattack had taken place because one hack was unlikely to affect so many apps at once. Security experts said the problem most likely stemmed instead from a misconfiguration of Facebook’s server computers, which were not letting people connect to its sites like Instagram and WhatsApp. When such errors occur, companies frequently roll back to their previous configuration, but Facebook’s problems appeared to be more complex and to require some manual updating. It would be unfortunate if this was just a glitch in the Matrix and not an attack.
We can all just send each other postcards with pictures of our toys via carrier pigeon. But how will I know if you like it....?
how many dances do I have to memorize to be able to enter a lottery, instead of just placing prayer hands emojis in the comment section
This fuckup had pretty wide-ranging implications: https://twitter.com/sheeraf/status/1445099150316503057 I would love to rid myself forever of Facebook and Instagram, but too many of my friends overseas use them as the sole means of contacting me. I'd love for everyone to migrate to Signal and Mastodon but they're always going to remain niche services.
