I dont mind chrome on toys if its used sparingly. Weapons, armour for the Saint Seiya Knights or the engines on toy cars etc etc.

I'm not a fan of toys that are completely covered in it though, it looks too 'bling'. Too showy. Why not randomly glue on some fake jewels as well while you're at it ...

So we can all show up to sofubi events with our favorite toys like this?

My understanding is that there has been a lot of trial and error throughout the last few years and that the formulation has improved. Time will tell I suppose, but either way I have no problem buying art that also comes with a degree of trial and error for new techniques and technology. I am all for the medium evolving and improving, and the only way to do that sometimes is to try and fail.

I don't have any chrome/gold toys in my collection, but just won my first one and I hope soon my 2nd. I think they'll really pop out as showcase pieces in my collection, almost like award versions of the sculpt highlighting that maker in particular.

Worst case scenario is I have a toy that looks weird in a few years, but Hell, they all look weird to the people that don't get it!

I was gonna point out Secret Base’s chrome fighters, but Joe came in swingin’. I, too, think it looks awesome. But the ones I had chipped and stripped like crazy. Even one that I bought still bagged and headered, the bag stuck to the chrome and pulled it off. Paul Kaiju did it a few years back with his Dual Bats at Gunnzo, as well. I will say, though, the chrome turns the vinyl into more of a hyper plastic toy feel. Still looks bad ass, though. I’m all for it, but I wouldn’t necessarily like to see it become standard.

Can't wait to pay M-world $4k for the new chrome-face Pepy in 2024.

A toy maker friend of mine said the exact same thing last year when new chromed vinyl started being a thing again. That in the past not only did chrome on vinyl age very poorly but even just the shrinking and expanding that can happen in one day because of a decent temperature change can ruin the entire toy. He was curious about the differences between what was used before and what people are doing now so he bought a new chromed sofubi toy to test it out. The coating failed pretty quickly when he played with it.

I still like the chrome Secret Base and Blobpus despite the aging.
That said, I still struggle with wabi-sabi at times.
In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.

Yeah, but wabi sabi my ass when you spend many Jordans on a toy only to have it look like crap if it’s not in a climate controlled space. I think that’s the main worry for most of us

I really dig how it looks, but it does cheapen the sculpt more than helps in most cases.

To add to zombie d*ck, I think that until we reach chrome rainbow vomit colorways, when haven’t really explored the possibilities of this application

The early chrome was a vacuum-type and seemed to crack off or bubble. This newer technique is more like an actual electro-plating and seems to hold up pretty well through some abuse. Unless you intend to beat the shit out of it with a bat.

Well luckily you can buy just the tank bottom for the low, low price of $310. Seriously, what the fuck?

On the knobhead front, I think the mouth and placement of the doll eye makes this the most successful Nag pretender to date. I absolutely mean that. And it's still ugly as sin, so take what you want about Nags from that.

    Did somebody mention chrome? ;)

This recent coloured chrome is reminding me of cheap toys and coin banks (for kids) i've seen in local discount retailers. It's obviously the same process being used ...

So far, Paul’s metallic Sally Joes that he oversprayed himself with transparent colors are the best looking of the nu-metal revival stuff to my eyes. Not that that should come as a surprise. He’s Paul Fuckin Kaiju.

I’m thinkin’ that whatever factory/factories are doin’ the metallic finishes have a lot of material stock, so they’re maybe offering it to multiple makers so that it gets used? I definitely have to say Paul’s the only artist makin’ legitimate use of it by implementing his candy sprays, and not just throwin’ somethin’ out and sayin’ “CHROME!!!”

Indeed, you can't blame people for utilising new technology that's offered to them. What happened to the 'crystal clear' sofubi that was being talked about a while ago? That was another one ...

I’m getting tired of tentacles. Okay, we get it, you’re trying to evoke the eldritch creatures of Lovecraft. If everyone does it, it’s just not creepy anymore.
