Yeah I can’t find much fault in the Nag gojis, the paint jobs are very much on point and the sculpts are nice. The sculpts are a bit too realistic and X-plus-ish for my personal tastes, but I can def appreciate them.

A gnarly Biollante is in the works. My best guess is the scale will be in line with the Marusan 450 series. Looking forward to seeing a painted sample.

Shame Medicom won't run the brand into the ground with big-run releases. Even at the steep retail I'd nab the open-mouth 2001 Goji that's been teased.

I was used to associating Nag with burnt turds. This newfound creativity is confusing at best.

I've always enjoyed the biollante character and design. It seems like each toy of it tries to outdo the previous version. They keep getting bigger and more insane as they go along. This one seems to be the most impressive yet! Looking forward to admiring finished versions from afar.

The big question for me with all these new Goji releases is, I wonder if Shig is actually sculpting these? Or if he has someone else doing it? Either way, they're super cool but unattainable as is to be expected.

The GMK Godzilla and Biollante suits have very different skin textures.

These two toys have highly stylized, nearly identical skin textures. Like it's a gimmick.

So far these are a fail for me. Let's see if he does a Mechagodzilla with spiky scales, too.

Very very unlikely that he’s sculpting these. He started working with that robot guy (who was a regular of mine until he hopped on the asshat bandwagon) years ago, and I’d guess either he or some other skilled sculptor is responsible. Medicom knows plenty of people to do the job, and I’m sure old Mr. Boredom is happy to slap his logo on there and collect the royalties.

edit - or they are straight digital (probably that actually)

its a very boring sculpt, the 90 degree bend in the top set of arms looks shit.

That arm bend bothered me too, I’d have to see the other side, maybe it’s unique to that arm and they made all the arms bend a little differently.

It’s getting into that X-Plus territory, come to think of it, if his GMK Godzilla had a matte finish instead of gloss it might also start resembling an X-Plus Godzilla. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I’m sure the brand has a very strong following and has plenty of desired figures that seem to fetch high prices, even if it doesn’t get a lot of love here.

Nag and Hirota seem to be going blow for blow with the licensed medicom projects, who will emerge the ultimate sofubi juggernaut?

I can actually see both... X-Plus in terms of detail, Planet-X Asia in terms of girth and overall build.

The arm in question appears to have a bit more curvature at different points when viewed from the side. Photo courtesy of taka-goros on Instagram.

The charm of NAG was his punk side. He said fuck everyone including Medicom. Was always mad at literally everyone. Made toys himself, painted himself.

Now everything is farmed out. He works exclusively almost with Medicom. Paints a master and let’s the factory do the rest yet charges the same as if he painted it. Which makes no sense since they are runs of like 20-50.

God forbid anyone does a Garamon paint, since he claims anyone who does so is ripping him off. Like he created garamon ….

All these Godzilla licensed pieces going around seems lazy to me. Nothing charming from most of them. I mean great sculpts, but If you didn’t know who was attached to it, nothing in the sculpt would say who it was by. Nothing is daring in the ways most indi sofubi is.

People are just going to the pedigree.

I mean good for him, he crossed over, made a huge career pretty fast. I just wonder how long it’s gonna be before he returns to his roots if he ever will. That’s what I’m most waiting for even if I don’t get any of his work. The Rikidizer stuff is great but it’s a group thing and it doesn’t feel like NAG is the leader of that group can’t say it feels like his work.

Hirota I get, almost every single toy he makes is a reference almost verbatim to some esoteric box art. He’s friends with some of the biggest names in Japanese art, which definitely helps push his stardom. Especially the Haroshi works. At least he is one of the oldest most important Neo sofubi makers and has been incredibly consistent in design since day one.

These two (hirota & nnn) are waiting for their Brooklyn museum show a’la Kaws.

I feel the way the designer toy scene has pushed into contemporary art is the reason so many are paying so much attention to such mediocre work.

Godzilla is played ad nauseam for Japanese artists like star wars for Americans. The obvious overlap here being astroboy. It is just a cash cow for any big pockets full enough to throw ridiculous money at some trophy shelf thing that photographs well for IG.

cute toy, looks like it should’ve been resin

It is so meta it probably has to happen. Full funds go to support Ben's farm and Moloch breeding.

Is Virgil holding that thing supposed to mean something substantial? All I see is another hype entity holding some expensive hype.

People are going nuts over it, thinking it is a leading indicator of new hype entering the sofubi scene.

Personally I think it is much ado about nothing. It's an IG story that'll be gone in a few hours. Call me crazy but I doubt we're going to see his sofubi collection fill up his IG. I'm pretty sure it was just a gift from zoow24 and won't result in 500 millionaires joining the sofubi scene overnight.

@kid_miracleman Even if that did happen what would be changed, exactly? Nags have always been expensive since they hit they hype radar. They’ve always been hard to get. They’ve always carried a sense of “importance” to collectors if you’ve got one(or more). They’ve always had scarcity and exclusivity. All that would happen is the pool of big spenders would widen to even bigger spenders, and collectors that were dropping $2K+ on Nags will be losing out to people paying $6K+ for Nags. Good for Shig, I guess. Just reminds me of Be@rbricks getting crazy expensive after Ben Baller started openly collecting ‘em.

Was it a gift or did he just want to show him off? I wouldn’t be gifting a 10k dollie to anyone. I don’t care who they are or how famous or influential.

while this is active. The medicom 25th manual came with a supplemental English book filled with interviews. I was excited to read the Nag interview, but it really disappointed, not much depth whatsoever. But all the interviews were like that, very safe and unrevealing. I’ll also mention he did an earlier interview with clutter which was just a string of fucks in response to every question. I’ve uploaded the interview for those who don’t have the book.
