Sunday afternoon promised some free fun in the form of an open to all promo event for Larry Clark's new movie: Wassup Rockers - the story of a bunch of Latino punk loving, tight trousered, long haired skaters who ditch south central to skate Beverly Hills for a day.

The block party was held way downtown, at American Apparels factory from late afternoon until the film screening at 8:30PM. I didn't get to stay long enough for the movie, but I did get to soak up the vibe. Skate mayhem, with a couple of hundred kids tearing it up on some quarter pipes, mini-ramp and street obstacles. A small stage hosting some hardcore bands from the soundtrack...most of whom were firmly committed to their art...but sounded bloody awful. Tons of young, good natured, mainly Latino punk kids hanging out. And? Larry Clark and the cast of the movie signing posters and doing lots and lots of media.

So, not as amazing as it promised to be, but kind of fun to...and definitely different to my usual Sunday afternoon. Here's some pics I took:

Nearly every skate kid was rockin' super tight pants, including most all of the older crew who were tearin up the mini-ramp. Its a good things those things stretch!!!

I used to skate in the same cut in the eighties, but they didn't stretch....I remember totally ripping out the crotch on a contorted hands down power slide - so coooooooool.

I'm pretty over the stretch denim, it doesn't feel right so now I only wear unwashed raw denim that is both tight and stiff, and I don't wash it, EVER!! I'm going to fucking smell by the end of summer, it's getting hot and my balls are sweating like glacier run off.

I didn't read this whole thread, but I just wanted to chime in and say that that played at the Philly Film Fest and I successfully avoided it because I think Larry Clark is a hack.

From what I've heard, the movie didn't get the greatest reviews, but I like the idea of it...and Sunday was fun.

It looks it . . thanks for sharing the pics!

Your Sunday was about a million miles away from mine . . . watching my girls Under 11 soccer team battle for 3rd in Leeds, eating bacon butties and milky sweet tea to keep warm! :D

Definitely no stretch pants, lycra or bullet belts to be seen 8)

c'mon Ceasar, you gotta admit, he's not like Eminem or anything like that. He did grow up in the ghetto. The trailer park kind  His beats are a nightmare to anyone that enjoys music but the kid can skate his ass off. And he did donate his Hosoi board graphics to "Holmes" legal funds.

I'm still waiting for the baggy Jimmy'Z pants to come back so I can be in vouge.
