As a Kure Kure collector I was not too impressed with that set so i passed.
But i would have gladly bought one knowing i could have prevented that.

Mushi Bros Toys and Scotty Wang of Demoncraft unite to present to you all 'Queen of Hannya Scarab'.

After seeing this thing gushingly described as 'Next Level' with many, many comments praising its awesomeness, I thought I'd chip-in and offer my humble thoughts on the awkward looking lump.

13 points of articulation (14 pieces) with use of 360 degree ball joints, doesn't seem like a Sofubi toy to me. What it looks like, is an ugly and convoluted mess. Basically a Ladybug 'Keyper' from the 80's but reborn as expensive designer toy toss. Possibly the contender for 'first-ever digitally sculpted cowpat'.

    Vomit.

Of course it has a goddamn skull on the back. It’s 2020 can’t be a shit toy without a skull somewhere and a subtle oni reference just for good measure

original, like making another goji sculpt and sticking a 500 buck pricetag to it and a crappy thermal look paint job

What a clusterfuck. I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be looking at, there’s just so much stuff crammed onto this sculpt.
The oni part kind of reminds me of those crabs that have a “face” on their backs, except that LOOKS like a face, this just IS a face. And of course it has a skull as well. Haven’t ever seen that shtick before!

If this is “next level” and the future of sofubi, I want off this bus.
And 14 parts of ball-joint articulation? That’s an oversized action figure, not sofubi.

Not my thing, but maybe we will see those production capabilities used more conservatively, to greater effect, down the road. Sometimes the 'kitchen sink' toys set the stage for what can (but perhaps shouldn't be) done, and more restrained and artful designs enter the picture a little later

Like the restrained and artful designs that have been regularly made for decades already? Most of them attained popularity with five points of articulation. I don't want to come across as a Luddite, but why try and fix something that isn't broken? One of my favourite things about Sofubi is the lack of articulation, same goes for the old rubber toys I collect. They originated from a simpler manufacturing time period, a process that hasn't needed any bells and whistles added over the years, because they absolutely got it right the first time. The name 'Sofubi' to me, represents a very particular type of toy, its not just a name for the material used in the manufacturing.
Agreed. A lot of digitally sculpted toys nowadays look more like action figures than anything else. Some designers are exploiting the 'Sofubi' tag to add some exclusivity and coolness to their work, whilst not really giving two hoots about the established esthetics and traditions of the medium.

to add to that, thankfully there are plenty of 'purist' artists working in the medium. Many of those are innovating in the field whilst remaining concious of what distinguishes it.
Whether it be something as simple as Comet Debris making skateboards for his toys or as complex as HXS making precision guts components.

Yes, like those! Agreed on all counts!

I never want to see sofubi 'action figures' but the occasional conservative boundary-pusher (take Maruhachi's Rokuro from this year) is welcome.

I have to laugh at anyone talking like this is breaking boundaries in a medium that is, even to this day, still stuck in anthropomorphic shapes and derivative source materials. It’s toys, lol. Many collectors seem to forget that over their love for anything wearing Jordans.

sofubi hasn’t moved three steps away from Godzilla when it comes to manufacturing and resourcing. It’s the same stuff now than 60yrs ago only now swamped with lots of crap in between the Paul Kaijus that rescue it into relevance. Everything else is skulls and pus in colored/stained in vomit rainbows.
