So I was discussing this with a co-worker yesterday. It doesn't make a lick of sense. Can you shed any light on it?

    Whats to understand?

    apples and pears = stairs
    dog and bone = phone

    etc etc.

try dropping it into everyday conversation.

So any rhyme works? There aren't standard rhymes used by those who use this slang? And is it always the second word that rhymes with the word you're referring to?
And also, I thought that often the rhyming word actually gets dropped, leaving only the non-rhyming word. The example my co-worker used was this:

"Bob" is slang for pot because Bob Hope rhymes with dope.

    there is usually some standards.

The rhyming part can be dropped.

    Try these two:

    Have a butcher's =

    Use your loaf =

Have a butcher's = I don't have a clue. I want to say "Have a try", but I can't think of a word that "try" rhymes with that would come after "butcher's". I'm also assuming that only "butcher's" is the slang, and not the entire term.

Use your loaf = Use your head. (Loaf of bread - head?) I'm also basing my guess to the first example off my guess on this example - "Have a try. Use your head."

(I just noticed I'm no longer a Toy Prince! Thank fuck!)

loaf = head. Have a butcher's is have a 'look' as the full phrase is have a butcher's hook (look).

interestingly cockney borrowed from Jewish words too. Kosher meaning legit, and shtumm for keeping quiet.

No-one really uses rhyming slang. Not if they want to be taken seriously.

Definitely fun stuff! But I sure couldn't converse with someone using this type of slang. I had a hard enough time understanding the Brit and Aussie guys I hung with in Whistler!

One of my favorites is: Syrup

    taken from "Syrup of figs"

    example of usage is:

"Gorblimey, take a butchers at that geezer's SYRUP!"

any non-limeys know what SYRUP means?

Also: "Dog and Bone", occasionally shortened to "dog" , as in he's "on the dog"

Then of course 'the friendly coloquial 'Septic' . . . as in 'you'll have to excuse my friend he's a septic'

or the slightly obscure 'Tom Tit' (even I have no idea where this is derived from) . . . as in 'I'll be back in a minute, I gotta go for a Tom Tit'

Did you live up there? My friend used to live in staff housing when he taught snowboarding in Whistler and he had 3 Aussie roommates, it was always scary staying up there with them, they made me eat Marmite!

My pet Aussie is a Vegamite freak. Veg & marmite are gross.

Bob's yer uncle is from Robert Peel (Founder of the Met Police), same as Bobby or Peeler.
Except in this case, if Bob was your uncle, you had nothing to worry about if you were nicked by the rozzers.

Fanny's yer Aunt, but her daughter is Bloody Nora.
