USPS is set to end weekend mail beginning on August to "safe itself". Thoughts? I for one am disappointed with the increasing limitations of our postal service. http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ticker/u-post-office-ends-saturday-delivery-save-itself-140127634.html
Re: The end of saturday mail What I read said that it's just stopping Saturday delivery for First Class mail. Priority and Express should still be delivered on Saturdays.
Re: The end of saturday mail postage rates to Europe suck! I can live without Saturday mail...that doesn't sting as much as the rate increase.
Re: The end of saturday mail All I ever get is junk mail, so I think it's great. Also, packages will still be delivered on Saturdays.
Re: The end of saturday mail So any type of package is exempt from this or only those sent in a specific manner?
Re: The end of saturday mail Sigh, while I am sorry to hear that, it seems the actual change is minimal indeed, and there really isn't that much to complain about in the US - you guys have it pretty good. Other postal news thread.
Re: The end of saturday mail The rate increase is terrible, especially for International shipping. It used to cost me less than $6.00 to mail 1 CD to France for example. Now it costs almost $10.00.
Fuck the Republicans, they put undo pressure and financial burden on the PO to try and shut it down so their friends can privatize. If the Republican party had not forced them to fund retirement so far into the future (5.5 billion a year), which no other government agency has to do, they would not be very far into the red at all. Fucking politics getting in the way of my toy deliveries... someone has to PAY!
i'm not even going to touch the political side (dustin's got that covered... =p), but i'm close to saying FUCK YOU, USPS! altogether. in the years i have been sending and receiving regular packages in the mail, i've met a grand total of TWO usps employees that weren't complete ass-munchers. like accepting a package is some sort of laborious chore... how dare i expect you to do something that requires you to stop talking for two minutes? or that selling me stamps is some sort of HUGE favor that i should be bowing and scraping for the opportunity. FUCK YOU, YOU LAZY FUCKS! (okay, that turned into too much of a rant... i'll stop before i get even more worked up.)
Well I can't stand USPS/mail EXCEPT for sending and receiving packages, so as long as they keep delivering and sending on Saturday I've got no issue with not getting junk mail. I will say the new international rates are bollocks though! I got some sticker shock when the rate almost doubled to send one record to Canada today. I had to adjust my shipping rates on discogs to $9 for one record to Canada, $15 to Europe with an additional $4 per record and I'm still shorting myself. I fucking hate USPS!
The sources I read said they want to shut down Sat. completely as soon as August 1, which may or may not be illegal. Looks like a whole lot of red tape with regard to restructuring the organization. I'm been hired as a mailman for a couple months so I will forward any relevant updates.
I know this isn't practical from a business perspective, but I wish they would have ended Monday service instead. For a lot of full-time workers in the USA, Saturday was the only time one could schedule dealing with USPS "in person." Many times I've bought toys from Skullbrainers who said "I won't be able to mail the package until Saturday," totally understandable. Most of all in response to this story I'm really disliking the right wing demonization of the USPS, but I try not to rant too much about politics here so I'll stop there. I agree with NT. Nothing but good experiences with USPS, which is pretty amazing.
The faster it goes away the better. Just tonight I got home to netflix sleeves torn up with the dvds damaged and rubber banded together. "Damaged in handling in the Postal Service" stamped on both.
As long as priority/express packages are delivered on Sat, yeah, I don't care. Honestly they can use more of the automated machines per post office, upgrade them to take international things, make the drop off boxes bigger and keep the section where the automated machines are open 24 hours and we're set forever. I know some PO's have half the section gated off and the PO Box/Automated areas are open 24/7, some don't (mine, grrrr...) so I'd love to be able to roll in on a Sunday at any time and drop some boxes off.
Ugh.. I've always gone to USPS first whenever I needed to ship things but lately I've been selling more stuff online, to keep ahead of some bills, and have become more and more irritated every time I do. I keep finding UPS and FedEx are less expensive and more dependable, and now USPS is stopping mail on Sat!? What advantages are there to USPS anymore!?
I always found USPS's tracking to be more reliable. And they don't deliver at friggin 8pm like UPS does. And Saturday delivery isn't an extra charge. And they don't do this: Or this: Or this:
from phoenix to chicago. went to washington. got raped by bigfoot. yeah, the usps is fucking awesome...
not trying to be a dick, but the more and larger you write fragile on something the more it will draw an assholes attention at a sorting facility, I find it best to just pack extra well and hope for the best
so basically, what you're saying is, regardless of USPS, UPS, FedEx, whatever... people suck. awesome sauce.
Yeaahh, I've really got to stop that. I tend to be a little OCD w' my "FRAGILE"s & I've thought about that possibility. Thank Godzilla it hasnt happened to me yet, but it's Not surprising at all that it happens.
I'd rather let my secure packaging do its work than to blindly trust a random stranger to take care of my package. I've rarely gotten crushed packages but it has happened, and the only thing that has saved the figure inside is good packaging. now can someone verify whether or not packages will still be delivered on saturday?
^^ Just go to USPS.com Info is up and for the short answer yes. I've had no problems with usps of the years. Zero. So I feel bad that they are bleeding and losing tons of money.
