This was done in about 2 hours. I have been working at being more gestural with my marks. In fact, this might be more of a warm up painting.......... this is not coming to me as easy as I would like. Please let me know what you guys think. Jack
All this stuff you've been posting has been fucking awesome!!! Makes me wish I had half the talent you have.
Outstanding illustration! Your intuition to go with more gestural, painterly strokes paid off. The background and subject interact perfectly.
Really, really cool. The way you did the mouth makes me think of Dieter on Sprockets pursing his lips, though!
I'm a huge original Ultraman fanatic, and have seen a lot of art based on the characters, and this is one of the best non-Japanese pieces I have ever seen. Excellent job capturing the subject perfectly!
You might reconsider the "ear" on the left side, otherwise it is GREAT! Fantastic work for 2 hours. I'd like to see what you do with Ultraman when you are feeling it!
This was painted from reference images. I got this great little book about "Ultraman" the last time I was in Japan and used those images as reference to get an idea of the image I wanted to paint. I then started with a blank canvas and then started blocking in neutral tones, just as you would do with an under painting. Once I get the image rendered to level I am happy with, I bring the image into photoshop and add color and special effects if needed. Here is a screen shot of the image in progress. I dropped out the white background so you can see the actual brush strokes a little easier, how I am using white to take away from some of the marks I already made and wasn't satisfied with. Also, I am not sure why I would need to reconsider his left "ear" since the angle he is at you would see it. That is why I included it in the image. If I took it away his head would be unbalanced and look funny. Thanks for all of the comments. Jack
