My wife only suggested earlier this week when we can get out and about again that I head to the Bridgwater arcade! I enjoy this chap’s videos and he recently reviewed the polymega His other videos on cracking consoles are worth a peek of you are into that sort of thing.
Yeah mate, I love it there. The time just flies by. I really love their selection of driving games all lined up along the back wall. Sit me in OutRun and I'm in heaven, its so nostalgic and fun. Unfortunately last time I was there the Star Wars vector cabinet was broken, which was a shame.
The best arcade game is a tie between marvel vs Capcom 2 and Soul Calibur 2. Best two fighting games ever made.
Between this thread, and mention of Hi Score Girl S2 in the NF thread, it reminded me that I just recently bought Street Fighter V when it was on sale for PS4. Watching S1 of HSG really made me want to play SF again.
I can’t get into any of the SF games since 3- the new fighters have never quite grabbed me the way the SF2 era characters did.
I haven't played anything since SF2 Turbo - so there's a ton of new characters for me. And yeah, most of them seem pretty meh. But then in SF2 I pretty much was a Ryu/Chun-li player, and I've found a handful of new characters that have pretty sweet move sets. Of course they tend to be large-chested female characters, which is a bit cringey...some moreso than others. I also bought it thinking I could unlock all the characters through game-play. And while that may technically be the case, it doesn't seem doable. But I've had fun whooping CPU ass with each of the pre-unlocked characters!
Nice! I was always a Ken/Guile(or Charlie if they had him) player. How does it play? That’s another reason I stopped playing, the feel of the games changed after I stopped playing (I was an arcade rat up through mvc2) and I couldn’t quite get into them after that.
Interesting. I like how most of us had classic pairings. While I played through most of the characters, I was definitely principally a Chun-Li/E. Honda person. I know where are getting a bit off topic here with the arcade discussions, but I have always been terribly envious of people (the US especially) where such things still exist, even if in a diminished capacity from its heyday, to the point where you can still go out, plop some coins in a machine, and waste away a good afternoon. Much like the whole Alamo Drafthouse-style experience, it is something I wish I could have as part of my regular life. And diners and drive-ins. ALL the diner and drive-ins in the world. Please.
@ultrakaiju i look back on the days spent at the arcade fondly, but I can’t say I wish to relive the experience. In fact, now that I think of it, there is a barcade not 4 miles from my home, but eh... I think I have too many hobbies and not enough time (and judging by the covid19 lockdown procrastinating is my #1) so somethings have fallen by the wayside. plus, when marvel vs Capcom 3 came out for ps3 I tried doing the online multi-player mode and realized I’m not dedicated enough to play against today’s gamers. I’m rusty, and online competition is rough. I was always more of a “I play [insert character] because I think he/she is my favorite” not “because the game balance gives them an advantage I can exploit”
^^ Oh totally, I was thinking more the early days. I am, and will always be, a button masher at heart. I think once fighting games evolved beyond SFII/MK and the like, which I already couldn't do, but you at least still had a chance without having to master 27 button combinations and requiring you to have a stick controller and elastic thumbs, etc, etc. I only ever picked characters because I like 'em and might have actually have had a shot. The whole online thing is probably why I have not had a modern/new game system in eons and don't even understand what it is about, let alone enough to be able to compete or survive for more than half a second.
Since I haven't played an SF in 25+ years, it's hard for me to say how it plays in comparison. But it seems to feel very familiar. So far the only thing I've noticed is that throws with Chun-li aren't as...available? I'm not sure. I just remember being able to grab/slam people with her very easily - especially grabbing out of the air. But Ryu feels pretty much the same. I'm not sure who Charlie is - did he become Nash? If so, Nash feels like a decent "replacement" for Guile since Guile is a locked character. To your comment about not being dedicated enough to compete with today's gamers - right there with ya! I've mostly been playing arcade mode, but have played online a few times...and gotten trounced! I may have won one match...but I might just be thinking of a round, and not a full match! I have enough credit thingies to unlock one character, and need to very carefully decide who I want to unlock because it might be the only one I get!
Oooh yeah! I wanted to name drop Out Run earlier but wasn't sure this was the place for anything as new as the second half of the eighties Also: Columns on Game Gear for handheld action
Yes, Charlie was Nash In The Japanese localizations of the games and Charlie in the English versions. And apparently in SF4 they finally renamed him officially as “Charlie Nash” so that either name is technically correct. (Thank you Wikipedia!)
Mike, this is more for a handheld experience - though it does have a library of Atari and Namco classics available - but I just learned of this somewhat new 'Evercade' retro console system: I've got to say, from some initial things I have read, it seems interesting. There are some bad reviews (naturally, as with all things nerdy), but this article on Gizmodo gives a rough summary of the console. Here is the UK site with links to where it's available for pre-order (also via other countries), for delivery later this May. Very tempting; once I get some funds on hand I may actually consider this. 60£ on Argos (a mail-order site) is not looking too bad, really. PS - I just read this actually can connect to TVs too, bonus!
This is sort of the type of thing I was mentioning before; a high-end playable system that actually has all the compatibility and amazing playability (for 2020) that would ask for. There are a few of these sorts out there, but they always run big figures. I mean, I am super into retro gaming, but just not flush with cash to drop on one. Anyways, the guys over at Analogue (a Seattle operation) recently did a special [re]release version of their NT mini (an NES player). It was priced at 500$, so definitely for the rare edition collectors I guess, but already sold out. But anyhow, check out the specs on their regular version here: https://www.analogue.co/nt-mini/ Judging from the write up and specs, it sounds amazing, and I would love to invest in one and finally just have a system I could carry around with me for years and always play the games I love. And here are a couple reviews [2] if you are interested, but google will bring up many more for anyone to decide on. They have also released similar machines for SNES, Sega, and pocket systems.
Update: looking like I'll be going w/ either an NES Classic or a Sega MegaDrive Mini. Or both. Will letchas know! Thanks again for all the great input here!
^ Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. You're not allowed to buy a system Mitch. We need to be able have nerdy gaming rants here forever.
@ultrakaiju i was looking at their superNT for the longest time, and then when I had the money to spend on it, the covid19 crisis hit. I contacted them and their production in China is understandably been disrupted. I’ve heard nothing but good things about their products.
Yeah, there is a good chance there are more coming, and - I hope at least - once this all passes these could be more regularly stocked. I would have such a hard time choosing too. Nintendo is my go to, and I would love to have that Famicom compatibility, but dammit if the SNES does not have an incredible array of titles I would be gleeful for. The hours and hours (and hours) I spent playing the Super Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi cartridges, over and over again, would easily have allowed me to pick up a second language. Je ne regrette rien!!
I got the turbo grafx mini since I feel those games are so much harder to come by. Don’t regret it, has some of the best shoot and cute’em ups. Plus the best version of Galaga.
I was thinking about picking one up. The library looks solid enough for a purchase. Is it in your possession yet?
It is! I’ve played it way more than I would any of the other Mini systems. I ordered it from Amazon Japan before EMS was suspended. But I think it was DHL that delivered it.
