Im pretty sure one of the flipper boss at Dcon this year is the same person / group that went to the mattreecafe in Australia earlier this year. ( He was openly bragging about what he scored to his minions in chinese )

If I see him again at Dcon next year I shall inform the artist/ person in charge of the line to see if they want to do anything about it.

Even though I wasn't at Dcon I had strong suspicions that might be the case. Thanks for the post.

That show in Sydney was absolutely fucked - mattreecafe was working with that flipper gang at his own fucking show, giving them all first pick, letting them cut lines etc. He basically organised a RxH show in Sydney earlier this year to gather flipper fodder for himself and his friends. It must have been super embarrassing for Mori and the crew to have flown all of the way there to see this shot happen in front of their own eyes. When a few of us called mattreecafe out about it he blocked our Instagrams and slinked into the shadows.

Wow, I only saw that some shady shit went down at the mattree cafe event, but I didn't expect it to be this bad, flipper organized circle jerk event basically. This probably ruins any chance that Mori will return for another event in Sydney, unless if its was organized by someone he knows not to be a flipper / associated with a flipper.

I suppose at the end of the day flippers will exist as long as there's a demand. The best I can do is not to support flippers by not buying outrageous prices.

I've stayed pretty quiet about this but I was at the show - arrived around 2 hours before it was due to start and was naively shocked to see how many people were waiting. Easily 50 people from entrance to end of line and another 50 or so after me by the time the show opened.

The organiser at the head of the queue was not allowing photographs inside or through the windows/doors which were obscured by cloth. Toys were not allowed to be photographed in the store either when I went in.

However two young guys in front of me already had a photo of the toy layout on the table, with circles drawn on them as 1st priority, 2nd priority etc. WeChat or something similar. I asked them if they are the ones they liked and they said no they were being paid to buy them.

Definitely this muppet was the ring leader: https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/seller/seanhatoon

Wish I took a photo of him. I was luckily able to get something from the show from RxH and I've been lucky previously to go to Japan with the Super 7 guys for their Tokyo Underground 2 tour and meet Mori at Shinto Gangu.

I would be shocked if the toy makers don't know these people by now considering the frequency of their flipped hauls.

I hope Mori comes back to AU but I don't see how this could happen.

Thanks for sharing your story, the flippers were definately using wechat/line as the goto app to communicate what to buy.

Glad to hear that you were still able to purchase something from Mori!

    Hi Darky,

I attended the show as well. Sorry to say that we weren't introduced. It's funny that when I spoke to the organisers before the show they said that they'd call the cops if people lined up overnight so I went to sleep early only to awake at 3AM with a friend (who thought he'd check it out) blowing up my phone saying that the Chinese flippers had landed in droves. Not only were no police called on them but Mattreecafe posted on his Instragram something like "The line has started". This post has now been removed.

I'm going to use a few instagram handles for the point of exposure in the next paragraph so bear with me:

I rocked up and yeah, on the sales day the show was basically dominated by @leosofubi controlling his minions who went off reference photos provided by @1981revetai. The sad thing is that this Revetai trash providing the photos was going under the guise of an organiser just because he was best mates with @annie_tingli and @mattreecafe the event runners who are husband and wife. They allowed him free reign to come in and out of the cafe and photograph whatever items he pleased so that he could report back to the big boss. I won't say that Mattree and Annie are flippers themselves but they definitely don't give two fucks about the collectors down here and are happy to associate with people who are. It guaranteed a sold out show but at what cost? They have essentially been excommunicated from the Australian sofubi community, brought shame to our country and disrespected Mori, Uamou and Chairoi Brown's intentions.

That'd be that leo sofubi dickhead, I saw pictures of him at Dcon pop up online.

who really deserves anything? are you are willing to organize events for the express purpose of poaching the most desirable pieces? do you pay people to stand in line, exploit lotteries, & yja the shit out of everything to keep the process repeating?

    Post DCON experience -

I didn't understand the line. Every year they do this thing, where you get to pick 1 item from either, Punk Drunkers, Goccodo, Skulltoys or RealxHead.
    I think that's fair.

What I don't think is fair, is there's a line already formed, before the show's opening. If you're VIP, you get in at 9am, and there's already a line formed before 6am. CLEARLY they aren't VIP, they are vendors. Of course, most of these people have both a Vendor and VIP badge.

And before things got hectic, staff disrupted the line, said "You can't hang out in this aisle, there's no line" but then that kind of fell through, once they did make an official line, and everyone in the old line just lined up again.

They should really take a page out of SDCC's book, and not sell to vendors. Like, clearly they're vendors if they're in the venue before the show opening. It just sucks, because I imagine a lot of honest people thinking, "VIP package is the way to go for a chance to get one of these pieces" only to rush to the booth and see there's a line 50-100 people deep already.

Plenty of cats exploiting vendor passes to get in line early. I might be misremembering but I believe some of the folks who rushed every booth carrying Chokehazrd at Five Points had a booth, some random toys and stickers and such.

Apparently there's a waiting list of hundreds for vendors at DCON. How do these flippers end up with a table?

That line was brutal Saturday, but it worked out in the end. Obviously, the pickings would've been better without the vendor/flipper drama, but I'm happy with my pick.

This thread also reminded me that I bought a Skull Toys mini on Friday that I misplaced. Found it though.

On Friday afternoon I asked the two guys that were first in the VIP line what time they got to the convention center, they said "10pm the night before (Thursday)". That's an 18-hour wait, major heartbreak if they ran upstairs only to find 50 people already in line for the hype booths like Medicom, RxH etc.

Either they were hell-bent on being the first people in the room after all the vendors, or they've learned a difficult lesson now.

Lots of vendors appeared much more intent on buying than selling. Plenty of people we all know, not must anonymous Chinese flippers.

Yep, it was him, He was the same person that got angry & demanded a apology after being called out on Sunday at the Refreshment Toy sample sale. Items were being sold via dice roll, 1 in 6 chance to win and buy, but he was constantly in the front of the line, using multiple proxies to line up for him, and he would do " 1 : 1 " line swaps. He said whats wrong with doing 1:1 place swaps and that the artist did not complain. I didn't want to cause a scene since I wasn't aware of his long history of flipping, had I known Id definitely bring it up to the artist.

Really pathetic as he was clearly trying to empty out the booth of whatever items they had for sale. He was also using " a friends's " vendor badge to beat the lines. Definitely will point him out to the artists at future cons if I see him again.

Should probably make a wanted poster of all flippers so all the sellers know, and ban them from buying anything, but only inform them the last minute after they've wasted all their time and money to line up.

Bump. Plenty of Asian collectors get profiled hard because we have this image of the "Chinese flipper", and don't exercise the same scrutiny with guys we know.

Agreed, I'm Chinese and my buddy above, @kubism, we felt embarrassed by it, you know? It's unfortunate that majority of the flippers, and not just with toys, are Chinese. Flipping aside, I just wish people were less rude.

I wonder why pds and skull ran a lotto at 5 points but continue on with the first come first served method at dcon?? It's always seemed to me that lotteries are the most fair way to run sales for the really overhyped artists. Thoughts?

I agree that it's the fairest method, but there's no perfect way to sell. Turn away anyone you don't recognise and you're reasonably certain everyone buying actually wants the toy, but you close your work off to new collectors. I'm told Mori's sales within Japan lean this way. Go totally random or favour plenty of new faces, and you give newcomers a chance, but a significant proportion of the run will wind up with resellers or people fishing for trade bait. That seems to happen quite often with Atom A and TkoM. I don't know what the right answer is, but it's a sad state of affairs. No one person can control the market.

I just don't understand how the Hell the RxH aftermarket exploded pretty much overnight.

I've been meaning to get a couple of pieces of his but he had so many available I was waiting to find just the right sculpt/parts/paint job. I assumed, naively I suppose now, that given how he's put out THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of toys out in the world at this point it wouldn't justify a huge markup. I would see his IG posts with dozens and dozens of toys coming out every release and eventually I thought "when I go to Japan I'll buy one from the man himself".

Now it is this insane flipper Hellscape and it has sucked all the fun out of it. I waited in line for a Punk Drunkers / RxH colab figuring I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone but now? Fuck it.

It was rad visiting Mori’s shop again. This time I viewed how he handles the line; a group of about 3 visitors, not sure where they were from but they looked white, showed up. They didn’t understand what Mori was trying to get at, another regular collector explained to them to the effect that Mori doesn’t know them but he will let them purchase an item once everyone in the line went through. I didn’t stay too long that day so I’m not sure if they did come back. Don’t quote me on on any of this, it was explained second hand but it was interesting to watch. From my own observation, I couldn’t tell what their intentions were. I think they did follow me for a bit from the train station, probably were confused since the shop is away from the hustle and bustle of the main Tokyo area.

This reminds me of 2008 with the new releases weekly and flipper witch hunts. Now how did that end...?
