@ultrakaiju was this on the boards or online somewhere?

For the record I do personally know folks who are looking to trade for Hirota's work after seeing the stuff at the exhibition. They might well get offered stuff that was recently sold. Besides, some proportion of every run is going to get flipped for cash or trades on release. I just hope it's always a minority.

it was emailed by a service provider. I was still getting their emails but I kindly told them to fuck off because I'm nice.

I did notice while looking through an old S7 mag that they had an advertisement there. ;-/

Just to be clear, I purposefully left out any specifics of this sale, per board policy, but also because I am not trying to throw particular shade against any person/organisation. The point of the post was merely a demonstration that, yes, despite the many hardcore fans out there, there is still people either buying too much to 'get in on that hit' or for the mere purpose of immediately turning a toy around; either one of which doesn't serve the rest of the hobby very well. And, even if it has no effect (and it won't, on the average people doing it), you will be called on it every time. There's no avoiding it, but when it has become so blatant and immediate - as it is now - it's a stink that seems to be difficult to wash from these toys.

For the funerals of everyone else that can't blow thousands on his toys.

It’s funny the person who sent one of them used his Instagram name and what do you know he scored big

I wonder what the price of the large gorilla went for? A condo? :)
p.s. those flower arrangements are a bit creepy. They do indeed look like funeral flowers (weird!).

Would be surprised if the big boy sold, but then again I know people who collect TkoM's fiberglass stuff

Don't get me wrong, I think the toys themselves are very interesting to look at (although not my taste for adopting), but the hype and fan craziness is a bit over the top! I'm sure the big kittee sold, but personally I LUV those bell jars! :)

Agreed. I know a lot of folks have close relationships with their favourite artists and for those who are personal friends I'd never side-eye a gift. Hell, I'd feel wrong rocking up to a friend's show without bringing them something. But the ostentatious flowers translating to lotto wins smells nasty.

It is not uncommon to give flower arrangements as gifts in Asian countries like China and Japan. It is basically to wish them much success.

Yes that's true, it's also common to gift arrangements for newly opened shops and restaurants, but for a toy show? The Chinese tend to give money plants and good luck arrangements, but again, these flowers look more like funeral arrangements, which makes it look odd

Yeah there's admittedly a cultural side of this I can't relate to. I don't know though; there are differences between a tasteful bouquet, an ostentatious one, and the sprawling monstrosity on the left in that video.

Less common for toy show. But I have seen it for M1 and Marusan and other toy makers. There is an etiquette on what types of flowers and colors are for funerals and what are consider gifts. Being Asian myself and having gone to a number of Asian funerals including my fathers. I think the ones given to Hirota-san are fine for gifts and do not look like the types of flowers used at funerals.

I'm also Asian. Flowers NOT to give are white and blue (these are mourning colors for many Asian cultures), also no lotus blossoms, camellias, and lilies. Yellow Chrysanthemums are tricky--they can be considered funeral flowers for the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans. Nothing red! <--since red is a joyous color. Those laminated gift signs aren't really traditional Noshi (although I admit, I'm not an expert). Flowers on stick stands are usually the form for funerals, that is what seems visually odd. This may be ok in the Japanese culture (I don't know if it is), but flowers on sticks for the Chinese culture are funeral flowers (even if the flowers themselves are colorful, and not funeral flowers, putting them on sticks is a no no).

p.s. thanks for passing on the knowledge that flowers can be sent to a toy show!

p.p.s. sorry for the derail, but I'm a sucker for paper and packaging! More about Noshi...

@chimply.kaiju @Mr. Humphreys Interesting. Although I'm pretty sure that whatever the cultural background may or may not be it's kinda bad form to send a flower bouquet & card signed with your Insta handle... "Truly sorry for your loss. -@rotzombcockbellyface69"
