    Anyone catch Mandy yet?

New Nicolas Cage flick you can rent a couple of different ways.

Without giving away anything it was easily the best throwback horror movie I've seen for years. Probably the only movie I sat and watched then instantly started over this decade. Fucking brilliant and I had no idea what it was when I rented it. Just liked the cover.

It was a total 70's acid trip type of slasher revenge flick. Some utterly satisfying practical effects with enough gore to be over the top and it just oozed atmosphere with the constant color changes and soundtrack. I was blown away.

^^^ Any fans of Cosmatos' first film, Beyond the Black Rainbow? Really dug it at the time, so you could sort of say that I've been looking forward to Mandy for eight years!

My hope was to catch the new one on a big screen, but it looks like it won't be showing anywhere near me. Sad news.

I liked his first film for what it was but this one feels like an entirely new genre for him. Horror is always my personal favorite and this is as horror as it gets.

    Two words: Karate Professor.

I didn't care much for BTBR first time I watched it, but gave it another shot last month or so, and felt much the same. Really liked the visuals and the music, but the story left me wanting more. Super jazzed about Mandy though.

Dammit, I almost wrote Kung Fu Professor, then went to IMDb and they have him listed as Karate Professor. Now I look like a dunce!

^ Ha, no worries! It probably helps that I just took that scene in less than two days ago.

Okay, so who's put themselves through Coralie Fargeat's Revenge already? Most unpleasant and pretty great, although I probably won't be revisiting it anytime soon.

I watched it on Friday. It was a nice bloody ride that's for sure. My brain balked at some of the goofs, but nothing too terrible. I was racking my brain to figure out where I'd seen that young lady before, then realized it was in the mostly awful Rings. She was pretty awesome in this though. Really liked the effects, too. I'd heard it was bloody, but was still taken slightly aback by the ending.
This is one I might actually watch again in the near future, which I don't often say about rape/revenge movies.

I caught that not long ago. Really liked parts of it but that beer can brand/tattoo was just awesome. Odd but fun flick and that girl was ridiculously pretty.

Just watched Tag on NF. Not really horror, per se, but shares some traits - namely cheesy special/practical effects. We mostly watched it because of Reina Trendl, one of the hosts of Terrace House.

Whaaaa? Now, that is genuinely surprising. More so the not ever having seen it, which I would not have expected, but I am also quite happy that you went into it blind, and can that much more 'appreciate' it for what it is. Biggest surprise for me with this film - it wasn't Canadian. Haahhahaha ;) I dig it, at any rate, and, much as they are the lesser siblings, would at least suggest a follow-up with the sequel, and part III as well (if you're really bored, but that last one is more optional).

Dang, this one would have been a great paired couch viewing.

Sorry I'm a few posts behind but Beyond the Black Rainbow was a great one for me when it came out. I've been eagerly awaiting Panos's next one for too long! Just read up about Mandy, I think I'll go home and watch it tonight, holy shit does it sound good. Thanks for the heads up y'all!

Yeah, I know how the world works and all, but I'm still beside myself with irritation that The Nun is playing on 5,473 screens near me but I would have had to take a 2 hour bus ride to see Nic's nostrils 40 feet tall.

Mandy was made to be seen loud and huge while you're trapped in an enormous dark room with strangers.

Also, haha, here's a roundabout spoiler:

May you rest in peace, Don Dohler. We'll always have this awful, awful film of yours.

I feel that pain. I live in major city, and I still feel like movie distributions are worse here than I have ever experienced. It is like they are taking lessons from Canadian telecoms.

I hesitate to mention there that, with more and more 'studios' opting to cash in make available their own - dedicated - streaming services, the market looks to only get worse, not better.

Oh! I'm so glad that you brought this up - I loved the handful of films by Sion Sono that I've seen (Suicide Club, anyone?) but never would have expected to find one on Netflix. I'll set my expectations to zero and give it a go.

That Tag movie looks kinda awesome.

By the by, if you missed The Witch on Prime it's now gone over to Netflix.

Mandy ain't playing anywhere near me, so boo to that.

Oh, hey, considering a re-watch: Was Vampire's Kiss the work of secret genius that I remember it as or should I just leave it undisturbed in my Happy Cabinet?

    I love Vampire's Kiss. It's a spiritual cousin to Martin. ;)

^ Full marks, it was a trick question! ;) Extra credit awarded for the Romero truth.

I had to laugh when all that running was interrupted by an actual race!

    Digi-goriest after school special ever.

Really interesting messaging throughout, If I'm reading it right, even if the care wasn't really taken to land it all right. As ever, I'd suggest not reading about the film first if you want to take it for a ride.

That sure didn't look like my kind of film, but I guess I would be willing to give it a go with these recommendations.

Ghost Stories was sort of interesting; not mind-blowing or really great, but managed to pass some time. It's biggest letdown was all the potential it had, which I think it just never got a chance (or maybe budget) to explore. They tried to wrap things up too quickly and in a very generic way, whereas there was some horror gold there that could have been mined further (I think) to really elevate it to another level. Maybe that was never the filmmakers intent though.

If you're referring to Tag, I wouldn't necessarily take my post as a recommendation. But I'm not saying DON'T watch it either. ;)

Ha, I'd be more inclined to suggest that you start looking into Sono than demanding that Tag is where you should start! He an extremely prolific dude, not unlike Miike, and the film being tossed around here is only one of five he made that year! Oh, and like Miike, not all of his efforts are likely to stack the same against one another. Not that he's like Miike, heh.

I started with Suicide Circle, from 2001, a film that made me curious to see what he'd been and and would be up to. His international breakthrough, if you can call it that, was 2008's Love Exposure. Either would be a fine place to start, I'd say, but others could probably give you a more informed suggestion; I've had a look at maybe 10 of his 30-something features!

Anywho, Tag's a weird little cheapie, filled with cut corners and ideas to spare. Lots of panties, too. Thanks again for pointing it out, @---NT---!
