Pretty ironic that some nutjob troll who was offended by actual pedophiles like Roy Moore getting busted is getting people fired for joking about the things his friends actually did and his other friends in government actually defended.

James Gunn and now Dan Harmon are prime examples of "What kind of comedians did you think they are?" upon hiring.

Specifically James Gunn, I don't think what he had said previously was funny, and yes, it's inappropriate, but those old tweets are poor representation of the kind of creative person he is now, currently.
Just knowing GotG is his baby, I feel bad for him being removed.

As for Dan Harmon, he hasn't been removed from Rick and Morty yet.

My favorite part of the Adult Swim statement:

This must not apply to Family Guy, where there are references all the time to pedophilia and date rape (any scene with Quagmire or the raspy-voiced senior citizen). I'm sure there are plenty of other Adult Swim shows where they joke about these things, too.

Stand up for your hire, that's fine, but don't try and make it look like you're genuinely offended by what he did when you air equally risque content.

The reason firing Gunn seems stupid is because this all came out publicly years ago and there was some serious backlash and he apologized and Disney talked to him about it specifically before they hired him for the Guardian movies. It was public and known and forgiven and accepted by Disney years ago. None of this is new in any way shape or form. So firing him just because someone brought it up all over again makes no sense at all.

It's like a cop pulling you over for speeding but letting you off with just a warning then showing up at your house 5 years later and giving you the ticket anyway.

It's Disney though so no one should be shocked.

To be completely honest...it's a cautionary tale for all humans. Don't post stupid shit or quite simply don't post at all. Social media is a disease. I get it that that is the way society is now but in all honesty...if you can avoid it do so. And yes I'm a hypocrite by saying that but I see people that don't have social media and their minds are clear.

It also highlights the fact that what is socially acceptable can completely change a lot faster than most people think it can. Comedy used to be untouchable because NOTHING was off limits. Then several years ago most of the biggest comics in the country all announced they would stop playing the college campus tour they had done for over a decade before because people would protest and boo and be outraged by the stuff everyone found funny just a few years ago. Even Seinfeld did the same thing saying that college kids just couldn't take a joke anymore. I'm not saying the change was good or bad but holy shit was it fast.

IG bothers me more and more lately. I remember during the election how dozens of the people I follow(who are almost all artists in one way or another as opposed to friends)joined the whole "don't vote because it doesn't matter" bandwagon and felt cool telling everyone to just not give a fuck. Posted images of both Hilary and Trump as devils and lizards and They Live aliens. Fast forward to right now and so many of those same people are outraged by what's happening in society. Saying how we are headed back to the dark ages and how they lost their healthcare coverage and can't afford their medicine anymore. One guy's mom was deported last month. She is elderly and knows no one outside of her kids who all live in the US and doesn't even speak Spanish but she was dropped off at the border by ICE and told to walk "home" into mexico with literally no where to go at all.

I totally understand the outrage but fucking c'mon people, you were using your social media platform with 10 or 20 or 50 thousand followers and telling them all not to give it shit because it doesn't matter. Now you're upset? How about fuck you. Anyone can say society itself is bullshit and pretend they are above it all and that politics just don't matter but some consequences are utterly inescapable.

Adult Swim's reaction is fucking pathetic and makes me want to create a troll account that gets outraged at their programming until it's ALL off the air. Derrick's lucky no one gives a shit about Mostly 4 Millenials (which is brilliant imho). If this is how "liberal media" see fit to deal with the environment that the regressive left has created and the right is utilizing right now to great ironic effect, they deserve all the Neo-Stalinism they can get. I still hope Cernovich contracts Ebola, though.

Honestly, it's probably a safe statement to say that everyone involved in these stories is at fault. I don't think comedy should be off-limits, but I also don't believe that comedians (or those who profess to be) should limit what they say because of some potential fallout from audiences. Isn't much of it about challenging notions and getting people to think anyway? If you believe you are brilliant/funny/have some insightful commentary to share with the world, then that's absolutely fine. But own that shit.

And probably they is a good percentage of Fox/Adult Swim/etc. content which I feel has no right to be on the air... but I don't run the networks or studios (sadly!!) and would same the same for the ABCs and CBSs.

The one part of this which does bug me is this whole alt-right BS. It is hypocrisy at its worst. Like @Waterbear pointed out, these flame campaigns are sad and pathetic. And they should always be taken in context. I am not making excuses for anyone here, but as a simple rebuttal

Putting this in a spoiler, because really, who wants to read this kid of shit?

    :x

Bottom line, offensive comedy in bad taste is offensive and in bad taste. But let's not let conservative activists dictate who can and should do what. And before anyone gets on their high horse over the saintly and pure Disney, let's not pretend their history is sparkling or even free from completely racist content. I mean, if we are going to start pulling out things from the past....

The raping kids comments as humor was never funny to begin with though. I'm sure most professional places would fire you on the spot if you made those kinds of jokes on a daily basis. Especially in public work environments. At least I hope they would.

You mean like that time Donald Duck was a Nazi or when he was fighting the Japanese in that other cartoon? Or how about Song Of The South? I'm sure there's more lol. But those stick out the most to me. Not to mention the man himself thought Hitler was great until the war started.

the autobahn didn't build itself. but we can't acknowledge the contributions to infrastructure or the industrialization of europe, only that he was a naughty man. good thing he didn't use the word pussy in a private conversation or hitler would be literally hitler.

Really man? First you completely miss the point, and try to turn this into some sort of political argument, which it really isn't. At all.

And now you are defending Hitler?

Surely there are more relevant places on the world of the internet where people will rise to your bait. This forum is just full of toy geeks.

I am not defending genocide cupcake, just (alt!) rightfully pointing out that as Disney recognized, there is more to hitler than the final solution.

now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to get back to my viewing of 50 shades of consensual rape.

This was starring to become an interesting conversation before the Hitler stupidity.
Should an artist be judged on their actions or words rather than their art?
Should an artist be ostracized because of their views even if we enjoy their work?
Hitler doesn't count as an artist. And as a leader should be judged on the genocide
Should abusers get fired? Yes please
But there seems to be a fine line, and a lot of people w dumb sensibilities are losing their livelihood

Don't forget this bit of fun for/from Patton Oswalt.

This run from him was one of the first things I thought of when all of this started going down, so no surprise that the trolling eventually worked! Here's the lot of them.

Brilliant. Rather uncanny the foresight Mr. Oswalt had when laying those troll traps...
5 years old and still working like a charm. That's quality craftsmanship.

That is genius. A LOT of people getting pissed about this charade/stepping up for Gunn and Silverman reacting sanely may be signs of hope I reckon.
