There is a lot of stuff coming from China that's pretty damn good quality. Unbox comes to mind. Unfortunately for every one of those you've got 20 guys with 200 followers pretending to be hot shit priced out the ying yang in some sort of bizarre feedback loop of self-perpetuating backpatting, like an ouroboros made out of dick

Oh no, don't give them any ideas!!! We don't need more dick-toys!

But dude. Jokes aside, I know EXACTLY what you mean, and you put it perfectly. They come right out the gate trumpeting their brand as being exclusive bullshit, priced as if they've been around forever. It's just fucking stupid.

Yeah, the brass neck on these guys. Where do they get the balls? haha.
Its like Bill Hicks said . . . . they carry their balls in a wheelbarrow.

Its almost funny how much they're taking the piss and getting away with it.

I don't care if that kind of high-rolling collector wants to fight it out like that,
but i don't like it when it encroaches negatively on my kind of collecting . . . .

I've kind of been priced out of my own hobby.

I’ve definitely been priced out of a few artists, and even admittedly a couple of the newer Chinese toys. Came out at a reasonable price, but then skyrocketed once the market started becoming flooded.

I'm personally hoping that in a few months to a year, most of these "artists" will have dropped off the radar (the ol' swindle and run, most likely). Suddenly a bunch of hype collectors will have a bunch of toys from a defunct artist, which usually makes things be considered "rare," but these guys never had much of a reputation outside being "new" and really fucking expensive... And sure, if you like a toy it really shouldn't matter how much other people value it, but that's how Instagram hypebeasts function. If their collection is no longer "cool" then why even have those toys? Those collectors will get mad at the hobby and quit, or seriously start reconsidering what they collect and whom they buy from.

...at least that's my hope. :?

All I know is these newcomers have started to price their toys for profit, not the love of toys. While the artist should be making profits from their toys, I just can't imagine how someone can just come out with their first sculpt and not start building up a loyal fanbase by keeping their prices reasonable.

That's the real tragedy of this whole situation: the commodification of art.

I mean, everyone deserves to make a living with their art, but that's something you earn.

I am curious how much well-known artists are raising their prices because of this, directly or indirectly. It's fucking everything up probably, from availability of vinyl, cost of production, and not wanting to under value your stuff. Hell, some toy lines I collect have went up 30%+ in a year or two....

    Wow.
A pioneering musician who's dealt with cancer and three of his most beloved animals die within months of each other.
But you want to judge him by what toys he owns.

Truly reaching piss poor sad levels Skullbrain. Keep up the good work.

I don't think anyone is judging him, I think it's more frustration that this "toy artist" took advantage of him. At least that's the way I took it.

Sorry, but I don't see how a grown adult entering a toy lotto for something that speaks to them is being "taken advantage of".
Far as I know no one in the history of collecting bought something because they had a gun to their head or were being blackmailed/extorted etc.
The aftermarket & over-eager collectors are a different story, but that's not the point.
PK's read on the post was accurate. SB does run on the elitest-side (understatement), and ultimately people collecting whatever it is they appreciate should be celebrated and not judged...
unless it's Funko Pops. There's no excuse for that ;)

The thing is as a general rule, an artist can never really lower their prices after they sell at whatever price they choose. Prices are going up but I don't think some artists who are rising the wave are quite looking at five even two years down the road where interest will be exhausted. So right now, things are going great for some sofubi guys.. however when the bubble pops, and they can't sell blanks for $300 anymore.. what are they going to do? They can't lower their prices because that's a slap in the face to people who paid such a high retail.

I mainly collect the bobble head Pop's as well as the recent 8 bit line. Iv also splurged on some of those mini My Little Pony blind bag figures casually at time cause I like the look of some of them.

On the point of ppl collecting stuff I try to be as open minded as possible. For instance that Utsugiyo gold dragon that was recently released was ugly as fuck and also some of the Butanohana stuff is to but I'm not going to make fun of ppl for collecting it unless they start there little rants with me.

In fact I quite liked that recent figure released at Dcon last year from Butanohana with the karate outfit on and the skullface.

It's kind of a ridiculous thread. I mean someone's work is going to be called ugly. Thing is all of it is ugly it's fuckin monsters! So to some the uglier the better.

Yo mama so ugly I told her to take out the trash and she moved out.
Yo mama so ugly they filmed "Gorillas in the Mist" in her shower.
Yo Mama so ugly, even hello kitty said goodbye.

I find this thread to be somewhat healthy in a way that opens the subjectivity of these toys, where they reside with collectors, and why, much like fine art. However, when you let your opinion on these toys be reflective of your opinion on someone as a person that collects them, you might need to chew some glass and spit it at your own reflection. I hate Nags. A lot. But I’m not gonna call someone a piece of shit or say they disappoint me because they legitimately enjoy Nags.

In my early days of going to hardcore shows in 2000 or so, I used to get made fun of heavily, on personal levels, for listening to nu, black and death metal, made fun of for wearing Champion hoodies/crewnecks, and now all of those are popular as shit in the subculture. What purpose does that serve? So Cevin collects a pyramid with tentacles on it. Would you no longer invite this man into a conversation or your home because of it?

Did I really came off as hating cEv for disapproving that he paid 300$ for a toy (not even that ugly/bad I might add) that I think may not be ethical? I have been supporting his musical endeavour since fuckin’ Bites came on and own probably 90% of his musical output. I would invite him to my home anytime and tell him just that and he would be encouraged to tell me to bug off :)

It may have just been very poorly chosen wording. It was to me, at least. Why would what he chooses to buy piss you off? And why would you liking him forever at all be a factor, or effected? That’s what I was confused, and even slightly bothered by when I read it. Miscommunication is easy over text, especially in a place like Skullbrain, where, tempers and opinions burn like my city’s summers. So if that’s all it was, no harm, no foul. But I still stand by my comments made about judgin’ people based on what they collect, whether they’re applicable to what’s been said or not.

I honestly have no opinion on this cEv guy (admittedly, I don't even have any idea who he is!). I meant that I don't think @nefasth meant any malice in their statement. I think we've all kind of "fallen" for a toy before and surrendered to the fact that no matter the price, we would have to have it. Personally that's where any disappointment lies in my own mind, not that someone bought the toy (because let's face it, it's not horrible, just kind of uninspired) but that crazy price.
I really don't think anyone was shitting on this guy.
But then again, maybe I'm just an optimist and am seeing all of this the way I hope it was meant.

No, I read it that way too; that @nefasth was disappointed that someone he liked so much owned something that bothered him. Similar to how I feel when people I admire own art by people I personally know are devious. It didn't seem to me to be any kind of comment on cEv himself . In fact, if anything it's the opposite ; if @nefasth didn't care then it wouldn't have bothered him. I see where you could have interpreted it that way ,@Paulkaiju, but I think you being friends with cEv and sensitive to what he's gone thru and then reading over that once in a rather negative thread had some immediate influence there. It took me a few times going thru the above comments to even piece together what you were referring too. Since some time has passed tho, I bet if you read it again, as well as @nefasth 's reply, it'll come across differently.

Just found this on IG, immediately thought it was ugly dumb, but also enjoy that. Thought about it some more and the head made me think a little bit of Minstrel/blackface, can someone please tell that’s not what I’m seeing?!

Wow, i think some people take comments on SB a little too seriously. Near-lurker status members coming out of hibernation just to show dissaproval of a harmless comment about toys.

    Sorry dad

What the hell has a comment about someone's toy tastes have to do with dead pets and cancer? Fuck all, thats what. Seems like SB is becoming all sensitive, just like the rest of the fucking internet.
