Been a long time since I’ve posted any thing here. I think I should start posting more again I miss this place !

I’ve been posting all the progress on Instagram but I’m so stoked on this wanted to share it here.

I’m a huge BEMON fan, I think the kougai is one of my favorite toys of all time. It’s been a long time thought to make my own version to contribute to the lore of the kougai kaiju.

In case you don’t know this characters history Brian Flynn helped me with this characters history.

Let me start by saying IKB doesn’t exist anymore, not even under a new name. So the company is gone and that’s clear.

That said, IKB only made 5 kaiju toys. The Mosugon ( tire monster) had a painting of smogon on it. This is where this character came from. The hedoran header cards are just 1/2/3 hedorans. So four of the five characters on the header cards were made. It wasn’t until BEMON made the 5th unoficially. And this was years later in the neo kaiju phase.

So the character was never made officially. The company doesn’t exist and arguably most popular version made by BEMON is the only existing version or take on what the character could have looked like in toy form. Since it was never made officially we don’t know if there was ever a version made differently. We just assume or think the BEMON is the true version because it was the first made. That I’m aware of at least.

To me the kougai is the underground’s version of a “Godzilla” character. It’s iconic to us. It’s a connection from vintage to neo kaiju. It’s all the things we love organic, goofy, scary.

I had the idea of what would it be if this character continues on throughout the years. The BEMON version is my favorite so my take continues on from what Honda san gave us. It’s my take. I’d love to see another maker take my version and continue on with it and so on. So say 50 years in the future what this could look like.

To me this character that has never officially been made by a company that no longer exists is the perfect fair use monster. I can see every maker having their version of the kougai ! Or at least would love to.

But here is mine. Just simply the MVH kougai Kaiju. My smog monster, my pollution monster. An addition to the sludge demon my very first toy.

It’s been years I’ve had this idea and when I finally decided to do this it came together fast. I made mine a bit more aggressive, added some hands and sculpting charistics of other MVH toys. I wanted to change my smoke stacks to resemble nuclear stacks and add articulated smoke/ flame plumes. Plus instead of the car pictured on the header card I decided to make an omake of flaming barrel of toxic waste. My thoughts were my kougai came from Three mile island.

Hope you guys dig, this has been a long time coming for me and I’m so stoked to share !

I’ll post more as it comes, but this guy goes off the Japan next week. I’m going to get it digitally scanned before so to have a back up incase of loss or damage like the Japan fire. I’m also thinking of makinh some mini versions of this made in the mean time since I can print the scan any size ( maybe a large fiber glass version in the future as well )

I’ll post more pics as I upload them, or just visit my IG feed. Its been so long I’m having a hard time uploading images.

Side by side of mine vs. BEMON ( my favorite maker of all time)

    Bottom stamps

    Finished hands

Rear of head. Originally I had just sculpted the rotted gates with waste flowing out and down the back side. When a skullbrain member mentioned how they looked like mouths. Such a great idea I included it and added some deformed noses to drive in the mouth feel. I’m always open to a good idea and love the fact that the people who collect and follow me feel comfortable contributing.

This skull head was sculpted for the Troll body. But I’m makinh the neck joints the same size and this head actually looks amazing on this kougai body so there will definitely be releases using this.

Some videos of turn arounds I posted to YouTube :

I have been following your progress on your version of the Kougai. Really exciting figure with your own spin on it. Hope to add one to my collection.

I love it. I've been critical of a lot of things but this interpretation is spot on. I own zero mvh and don't collect but this is works in so many ways.
If you aren't excited already. Get ready because this is going to explode

Been following this closely on IG and it rocks. I love that it's a bit larger than Honda's version. Looking forward to seeing metallics and sludgy/smoggy paints all over this guy.

@Rich - I have also been following your progress on the Kougai on IG, and I think it's great that you have decided to share some inspiration and thoughts in more detail here. I wish that more artists and toy creators still did the same. IG is convenient for quickly sharing photos and communicating, but web forums are ideal for maintaining a threaded conversation for longer than a few days in a row. Looking forward to seeing this creation come to life. I dig the Three Mile Island backstory to provide some local kaiju lore as well.

I'm a huge fan of this version of the kougai. It definitely looks like it had taken a few decades to grow and evolve into a more aggressive and cohesive monster, from the more immature and organic-looking creature created by BEMON... perhaps gathering up more pollution and radiation to "grow up." Probably my favorite part is the sculpting on the chest. It takes the design of that crazy little swirled-smoke nose, and turns it into a really cohesive texture to bring the face and body together. Just overall some great stuff.

Please keep us in the loop!

I try to do this with many of my toys. For example the trolls original head is Zug. Google Zug island hum. It’s a way to tie in American influences to the monster lore. My take was that it’s ZUG who makes the hum.

And I agree and something I’ll work on posting more so there is a thread to talk in more depth with.

Haha yeah I know, I’ve always either been loved or hated here. Not much middle ground.

But thank you for the kind words !

    Beautiful sculpt.

Considering the origins of this monster and of your personal brand there damn well should be an SB version of this thing for people here who have been along for the journey. Maybe a forum lotto? Anyone who signed up before you started this thread can enter haha!

SB's best kept secret. Nice work, i love it - it has plenty of personality. Like a fully formed cartoon version. Really interesting sculpt.

Question is, are we 'qualified' to collect? Haha.

Good to see some video coverage @Rich - let's get a studio tour video some day! The Skull head looks great, I really dig all of the deep crevices and holes.. the little screwed on metal plate is a nice Madballs reference as well. I still maintain the belief that it's the Badteeth tribute head even though it's is still unconfirmed ;)

Get one in clear vinyl and put dry ice to make him exhaust!!

Side Note: No idea what direct dry ice exposure to vinyl would do.

Minority report: This grotesque evolution is not for me. Your vision of this majestic monster is little but misery porn to my eyes. Kougai brings me joy; this beast makes me sad.

    Thank you for sharing, though.

Actually, not including several resin bootlegs, there are 4 other soft vinyl versions of Smogon 2-Go that came after the SVHC by Bemon. Two uniquely different versions called Smogon 2-Go by Target Earth, a gashapon mini called Hedoro by beaK and the Smogball version by Trutek. Bemon alone calls it Kougai Kaiju. IKB did not call it that, Smogon 2-Go was the creatures name, dubbed by whomever created it.

Thanks for sharing the crazy history behind the Kougai! It's really interesting to get some of the lore behind the sculpt, as well as the additions you're making to the story. This thing is gonna be a slimy banger, for sure.

You know what your absolutely right about your gatcha, the target earth and the trutek ball. I will edit my post. I suppose I was thinking in full scale vinyl toy, that would still have had me leave the target earth off the list though, so good call. As for bootlegs I’ve never seen them do you have pics to post that would be awesome to see !

Galung Gates make a sculpt years ago but never made anything with it.

As for name where did you get this info this is also news to me, again the more info the better so thank you for the help !

However I’m still going to call mine Kougai since it was BEMON who inspired mine and to keep lineage and homage I’m sticking with it.

The more info the better !
