Many of you know the artists David Choe.
I'd be surprised if any of you didn't.
I can honestly say I Love everything he's done, such an open, talented and likeable dude.
His paintings and drawings speak for themselves, his podcast DVDASA was great and broke ground IMO.
Also his band Mangchi Hammer did some very cool things in an extremely short time.

David's newest "thing" is The Choe Show.
Without explaining what it is or will be he's sent out applications to be on the show and is calling people back or emailing them with all kinds of follow up questions etc.

I applied though I never do things like this but felt compelled. I received 1 call back then another from David himself.
After signing bodily harm waivers and non disclosure agreements I'm in.

I have an official "ticket" for July 21st.
This could be amazing or a ridiculous disappointment but at least it's getting my blood pumping, I'm pretty introverted in my personal life.

I would be posting this here whether I was attempting to raise funds for this trip or not, which I am.
    (Short spiel)
I'm a broke dad of 2 with 3 jobs in desperate need of some artistic inspiration and I've set up a fund to help me get to the Choe Show. I'm offering one off custom Outer Space Men figures to donations of $50.00 or more. They will ship by Aug 31st.

    Donate

Thanks ahead of time, I'll keep the thread updated. I know this is tacky, it feels weird no doubt but I've never tried to sell anything on SB and thought some of you would find this interesting.
I can't afford the trip but I'm going even I sleep in my car.

To each their own. Good luck with yer quest and whatever floats yer boat . . . but with $200 million sat in the bank and STILL desperate for internet glory and recognition for his 'art' (intentional use of air quotes), this dude seems like the oldest millennial EVER!

    Hype > Hustle!

Purchased round trip train tickets for my trip across the country for the Choe Show, still trying to figure out a place to stay near by the mystery event...

Excited, nervous, not in a great position to go on any trips but I have the time off work, am looking forward to the peaceful train ride and am not going to chicken out.

Total shoe string budget, I'm definitely looking for extra work anyone need custom paint work?

I normally charge just $40-$60-$80 to paint small medium and large figures.

2 week or less turn around time for customs. I'm up to try any paint schemes any of you may have in mind.

Sorry to sound like a beggar, freaking out a bit. Thanks all.

I got accepted but on the standby lines for this weekend and I just couldn't get myself to stand outside at 5pm in this weather in sweats/etc like they had asked people to be. Plus there was no real guarantee I'd get in anyway so..

Really wanted to attend but bummed I didn't just get an "official" ticket.

    Have fun Topher!

P.S I was told David's spending 800-1000$ per person who attends. Wonder what it's on?

I got in, my show is tonight at 645. It says not to eat or drink or anything for 12 hours prior, but I didn't eat dinner last night so I'm already starving..

Plus I didn't really sleep last night, lol. I'm super stressed out I really hope I can at least enjoy the show if I even make it

This post makes me laugh and I'm okay if I'm the only one.

If you truly are a broke father of two... Be a better father. Stop buying and painting when you don't have the means.

The minute the hobby comes into conflict with my family. I painfully sell off toys. I've had to do it periodically and currently doing that now for school that I need to attend to keep me employed but I wouldn't have the audacity to ask people to send me money to fund my education.

It makes more sense to be excited about a chance to meet and artist and ask for donations to make your dream come true...and if so... I would most likely contribute because I understand.
BUT the minute you bring in the "broke father of two" routine..? Pretty pathetic.

You are entitled to your opinion.

I sold my collection long ago for family, they are fine whall I'm gone a few days.

Glad my financial shortcomings provided you a laugh.

I'm currently stuck in San Antonio for 5 hours as they hook my train car up to a different engine to go the rest of the way to Cali.

Train is interesting... Got motion sickness unexpectedly, I've never had issues like that before.

Far from an ideal situation to be in as your puking every hour or so, feeling better now.

Also trains are NOT for germ-a-phobes. I feel like I'm becoming one... Yuck!

Why did you delete your initial post? I was looking for a dialogue but your 'You suck!, this is for me, for my idol' etc comments.... well... Don't try to falsely take the high road.

Also, I would never take someone's "financial shortcomings as a laugh" but what I do take offense is for someone who claims financial hardship, works 3 jobs to support kids, and then asks for money for 'fun'.
There are a lot of artists that started on this board...who fought and were ridiculed and had to work from the ground up to create a name and they never asked for a handout.
    EVER.

Ok man, what's your point? Looking for a dialog or looking for a fight?

I did offer incentives for donations, I'm in the middle of this right now, feeling pretty weird.
Like I said you're entitled to you opinion, I don't need to tell you you suck, so I deleted it.

The disappointing thing about this thread is the non-disclosure agreement so we'll never get to find out what actually happened. I need closure!

Also it just seems odd that an artist would do some type of gallery or installation project and get people to jump through a bunch of hoops just to prove they are worthy of checking it out. Excluding people sounds pretty institutional and seems to go against the idea of "art" in general.

Yeah man that's definitely the weird part. It's generating hype which I'm sure he's anticipated and it says we will be filmed the whole time.
I'm assuming it will all come out as a show in time.

Trust me . . . you are not the only one!

Dude's half-assed art isn't newsworthy so making the weak-willed and desperate starve themselves and find ways and means to drag their asses across the country like a fuckin' lame reality show fuelled on hype alone sounds like some kinda power-trip!

The more I read about this shit, the more I fuckin' dispair!

*mental note: start Kickstarter for new Porsche*
