I couldn't find a thread dedicated to fun gachapon weirdness. I present these: Toho Monster press conference. This set features classic Godzilla monsters formally apologizing for the destruction they have caused.
LOVE This idea for a thread. Whenever my sister and brother-in-law visit Japan they always pick up gachapons for me. The weirder the better.
I'm a huge sucker for Gashapon and whenever I'm in Japan inevitably I sink a lot into those machines. I have that Godzilla press conference set. If I remember the signs are "Godzilla: apologizing for destruction, King Gidorah: apologizing for aggressive behavior, Mecha-G: apologizing for impersonation, Hedora: Not apologizing, standing defiant"
@analog101 those are the best gachas I have seen hands down. All kaiju collectors get increasingly interested in smaller and smaller sculpts as time goes on.
Coincidentally: Mark Nagata just put this up on his IG today haha Screen Shot 2017-03-12 at 12.14.58 PM by Doug Hardy, on Flickr
I remember trying to explain gachapon to my boyfriend. "You know those little vending machines at the super market that have cheap toys and gum balls? In Japan they have those, but better quality, and it's not just for kids... and they're a lot weirder." He's like "oh, cool." ...he's not really a toy person. (Trust me, I tried, but no dice.) Banana parrots and sausage isopods, bahahaha! Genius. I love it.
@Anti Social Andy I submitted the banana parrots to Boingboing for their banana category. Gave you credit!
I'd love to get any thing from this series...peanut, banana, mushroom, jello...I'm not picky. They are all awesome and so random.
a mate sent me some photos from a trip to HK amongst them was this tasty snack...soz for crappy pic.[/IMG]
I'm headed back to Japan next month. I'll be sure to take photos of any interesting Gashapon I come across.
Unfortunately all I can think of with the Fat Cute Soldiers is that they look like Ron English toys. I dig the Green Green Army and have a panda from the series that a buddy sent me. Capsule machine stores have to be some of the funnest places on the planet. I know I'd end up spending hours in there.
I recall a buddy picking up a Tempura Digger (deep fried JCB!) from one of the machines last time we were there . . . unfortunately I can't find any reference to it on the interwebz! #onlyinjapan
