Yeah, these new heads don't do it for me. Good sculpts but way too big. Not a big fan of the Mecha gorilla either. Clearly these guys can (digitally) sculpt, they just need better designs.

It could be possible that they went with a minimal take on something generally familiar for the sake of getting name known and recognized. That's grasping at straws, of course, but a possibility nonetheless. I do agree that it would've been cool to see a more unique perspective and design, but they most likely would've been chastised for "another two headed monster", regardless. I also do agree that the faces look a bit pumpkin - ish, but that notion alone could be turned into a rather rad paint application.

I saw that IG post too, and he did claim that's the inspiration, but the heads don't look similar in the least bit (other than standard facial features). The PxA toy's clearly another take on the 2H Bemon, and I'd go as far as to say inspired directly by the Bemon toy itself, since every one of their other figures is inspired from previous toys... I wonder why he's claiming the other as the basis for the design?
Yes! Thank You. I was trying to place what else he reminded me of and that's definitely it. The jaw and teeth of the closed-mouth head, although less pronounced, play into the pumpkinhead look as well.

I'm shocked that I actually dig how this new figure looks... of course it's annoying to see yet another bemon swipe produced in vinyl, and I personally am not a fan of digital sculpting but something about the cartoonish oversized heads is really attracting me. It's kind of so goofy that it has a funny bootleg version feel to the sculpt.. the angled jawlines/grimaced facial expression etc almost make it look like a 90s Marvel/Image comics version of the 2-headed beast.

I agree with most of the stuff said here. As far as the original sculpt, i think it's much better than most stuff coming out of the China/HK scene. My one critique would be to either reduce the texture on the upper half or add more to the bottom half. The top has that texture on top of texture digital sculpt look and the bottom looks like the more traditional Pilot Ace toy.

More than the toy itself, the business model, just like the Yajabin model has made me lose all interest. It's the issue of endless micro runs and customs, painted by everyone peppered all over the place. I notice this model is prevalent from people who make toys, but don't sculpt or paint, they tend to outsource every aspect of making a toy. I'd like to see Planet X Asia, slow down, learn how to airbrush, and start painting their own runs, in what their actual vision is for the toy.

@JoeMan yea I really don't get this trend of guys having customizers or known artists paint runs for them right out of the gate. seems like a ton of new makers are doing that now. I wonder if collaborative releases are happening more because of the community aspect of IG. I'd rather see the makers vision.

@evom I think it's for one of two reasons, they are just trying to gain popularity using more known people, or just don't know how to paint.

I'd say it's a little bit of both. There's some of the newer makers that are painting runs themselves, but that's dwarfed in comparison to collaborative runs, most of which I find rather rushed, non - sensical or hacked. Much like Evom's sentiment, I'm always much more interested in the maker's ideas and vision. They came up with the toy, presumably, so what do they see when they look at it? And don't get me wrong, I do favor a collaboration every now and then, but it's just not out there enough as of late. More than anything, I gotta say I'm with Joe on the "slow down, learn how to airbrush" idea.

Adding another shot from the side because the first one doesn't do it enough justice at least to me.

    Haha!

Very cool source of inspiration behind their new monster. If they do a version with a really bootleg paint style in those same classic colors I will have to track one down to go with my old mini versions.

    I was just kidding...

Planet Asia is a rapper from Fresno. lol. I instantly was attracted to the company based on their name.

I think some newer toy producers are sending blanks to painters willy-nilly for various reasons. To see what they do with them, to see how that painters work sells, maybe they are just drawn to particular styles or maybe certain toy painters bug the crap out of them with "I'd love to paint some" DM's and messages. I've personally seen and worked with some producers who are simply seeing dollar signs, by collaborating with established painters in hopes of a quick buck.

Whatever you think of the new phenomenon, sometimes it works out great:

    And other-times, well...

Man, this made me bust out some Cali Agents today 8) been a while.

I was able to snag the new red beast too, I'm interested to feel these in hand as I've been on the fence. Truteks paint apps have really made them more appealing though

As far as I can tell from various instagram posts, these guys are from HK. Part of the "Vintage Vinyl Club" (PLT, Purple Toys, etc).. I'm guessing if that's the case, the vinyl would be produced by Unbox?

If that's right @badteethcomics , it would make sense. Unbox is a Machine, producing a ton of work, of which a lot is good, but the clear Red Hot Toys' Umbrella Dog I received suffered from the same quality control issues that I've only ever seen with the clear Purple Toys' Nutipati (Who could forget that review? ;) ).

Glad to know yall didn't produce the Umbrella Dog, Dan. It is a fun sculpt, and I was able to get most of the dirt off, but those darn burn marks. Tsk tsk.

One of the (many) problems with having all of your paint jobs being done by customizers is that their paint apps are usually over the top, compared to what a normal painted run would look like... on a majority of these releases, you can't even tell what the vinyl color is because there's so much paint on these things. and I won't even mention how bad some of these things look

The two i have look fine. The colors look fine in person its just the light from my camera makes them brighter. However the one with the smeared on lipstick saying "DO I STILL LOOK PRETTY?!!" id have none of that lol.

Ill try to get an actual camera here eventually for taking shots of stuff one day.

There's not a nice enough camera in the world to make that paint job look bearable
