Thanks for the warning (though I actually like WWZ).
Has anyone seen Blair Witch yet?

This is on netflix now. Some of you will probably hate it but I think at least a couple people will enjoy. Fun stuff if you don't take it seriously and it's a pretty refreshing take on the whole found footage thing.

Ha ha, I just sat through this during last night's bout with insomnia:

    Time well spent. Honest.

What's that, WWZ is not the worst movie ever? Probably not, but I definitely have a candidate to far and away displace it in contention. Please, for the love of horror movies, I urge no one to put ANY money whatsoever towards the latest Blair Witch crapfest. Please, spend that money on toys, you will thank me. Modern horror movies are by and large utter shite, and this one hits all of those note. Honestly, other than just saying it is really bad, I won't mention anything about the plot (or specifically the many, MANY, reasons that this affected it), just that it is not worth your time and offers nothing of even entertainment value whatsoever in return. Nevermind 'scares' this movie just annoyed the shit out of me. Honestly, give me stereotypes, cheese, or hell, even boring, over that. Annoyance I cannot abide. I wish I could walk out of movies, I really do. But, having given it its fair shake, I completely wish it were forgotten, or better yet not made. My first comment leaving the theatre was I need a brain enema. Anyways, I could write a novella on all the terrible things put to screen, but there really isn't any point. I considered listing a long rant in spoilers, but it is probably pointless. I suppose if after all this you still want to check it out, you will anyways, but hopefully I might have at least saved a couple bucks and an hour and a half for somebody out there. I was actually (and always do) look forward to the October horror film season, but I am beginning to think this is a long gone tradition; I simply cannot enjoy what is classified as horror anymore. Probably a sad statement on both myself as well as the films. EDIT: I feel obligated to come back here and add one more thing, because, looking now, I see that for some truly bizarre logic-defying reason, people are actually rating it well. I honestly have no idea who this film was made for. Bored millennials who have only ever experienced jump scares presumably? But then, that defies any connection with nostalgia or cachet earned by connection to the first one. I really don't get it. i.e. (not my words)
But anyways, don't Blair Witch people. The filmmakers should be ashamed for the attempt; they don't deserve your money (if you must see it) and the film deserves to be bombing and forgotten in the depths of IMDB obscura.

Mh, I kinda still wanna see it

Binged Ash vs Evil Dead season one last night.
This show is so awesome it is hard to put in words. The format of 25 minute episodes is perfect for a show that silly. The gore is really well done, the jokes are as silly as they were back then and the finale has all the callbacks and winks you want.

With this show and Preacher I got something in 2016 I did not know I needed.

Second season premiere is awesome. I liked it more than any episode from the first season.

It's funny that you mentioned it, because after I watched BW, that was one thing that immediately popped into my head. The folks behind Ash v. Evil Dead understand and appreciate the genre; they embraced the cheese, the cliches, and everything that makes the genre enjoyable and fun. The folks behind BW seemingly did the complete opposite, they shat all over the original, disregarded everything that made it stand out, and completely went with whatever they deemed was the latest "hip" thing. Okay, I wasn't going to mention it, but as it spoils nothing and really sets you an idea of what to expect, there are drones in this movie. Yes, those idiotic POS you can pick up as Radio Shack and which everyone and they dog thinks can make them some kind of outstanding 'adventure' filmmaker. Honestly, I do not have eye rolls sufficient to express my disdain for the motivations of this film.

(but hey, I am not saying don't watch it if you must, I full expect a good number of people will; I am just urging suggesting that you might do so in some method that would spare you some cash [for toys] and not give any more to this movie)

@ultrakaiju just curious. Were the drones used to film the movie or used by the characters in the movie?

Alas, it was both (*technically). Although to zero effect; they only appeared to have them there for the sake of it (because everyone likes drones these days, eh?), and as a very minor plot device. Filming with them would have actually provided an avenue to do something maybe a little interesting or different, but they chose not to pursue that avenue at all. As it was drone 'footage' made up but a few minutes of the on-screen film - and was fully useless at that.

The VVitch is now available through Prime. Gotta admit, I was underwhelmed. I wouldn't call it boring, because it wasn't. And I don't mind a slow-burn, as long as some kind of atmosphere is evoked. Other than the lighting being really dark, I didn't get a spooky feeling from this movie at all. Oh well, to each their own.

On another note, TCM has a shit-ton of good horror going on this month. And SyFy (man, I hate that they changed their name!) is showing the remastered Phantasm on Thursday night. Unforuntately it's bound to be edited (as far as boobies and gore goes). But unless it's playing in your town, you'll have to wait till December to see it any other way.

Edited to add: Don't want to start a devoted thread to The Exorcist (tv show), but if you're watching it, wasn't the end of the second episode creepy as all get out??

I am hoping to catch the new Phantasm sequel this weekend! If it didn't have Angus in it I wouldn't bother but it was made while he was still alive which is wonderful.

Also there is a new horror flick I was hoping to catch at a film festival here but I just read that netflix acquired the rights to start streaming it pretty soon so I will be waiting for that instead of waiting in line for a few hours hoping to get a ticket before they are sold out. Netflix is doing a good job of not making me regret the recent price hike.

Appreciate the heads up but I would rather wait a few weeks and see it on my big tv on netflix since it would be free and I don't actually have itunes at all.

Which is your favorite? I get to watch the sequel on Sunday so I can watch a couple older ones tomorrow.

@ultrakaiju im interested in hearing why you disliked Blair Witch so much? Cant get a sense why from your prior posts. I didnt expect anything awesome but did have alot of fun watching it. Showing the actual witch kind of threw me off but it was terrifying in the end.

Checked out Sadako vs. Ayako last night at Beyond Fest. I will never attend the fest because the audience made me want to strangle them, but the film was fun. I wasnt expecting much since Freddy vs. Jason was horrible. I was surprised how well they kind of explained how it was going to work. The ending was open ended but had a great twist.

The first, by far! I watched it A LOT in my teens, and its odd-ball surrealism (which I now realize was due to the film being aggressively edited) and original story really stuck with me. The sequels are all very hit and miss, but they are generally pretty fun and always have some interesting little tid-bits. The new one isn't playing here, so I'll be watching it on VOD.

So... The Wailing. I wanted to love it , because The Chaser & Yellow Sea, but ended up frustrated and confused. The plot was so convoluted that I was too busy trying to figure out wtf is going on to be scared, the comedy felt overdone and misplaced and HOLY CRAP, less actual wailing would have really improved the overall experience imo. Did I miss something here..?!?

Finally watched Pontypool last night. I enjoyed it for what it was, although I was a little lost by the end. It looked great and the cast was decent with one annoying exception.

Anyway, I thought the first half was better where they were building suspense with whatever chaos was unfolding outside of the radio station.

In particular, the one scene where their field reporter was talking about herds of people trying to get into the doctor's building. Imagery of tons of people moving like a massive organism or wave formation has always freaked me out. There's a creepy hive mind-set to it and it's probably pretty gory with limbs snapping and whatnot.

World War Z had some of this to an extent.
The manga Apocalypse no Toride is a great example of this.
I remember the book The Wyrm by Stephen Laws had a creature based on this...or maybe one of this other books.

    Anyone got any more?

I'm with you Tim! Pontypool is a fun little watch. Definitely not a classic, but worth a watch for a diehard horror fan who is always looking for something decent to watch. The concept is completely abstract but if you can get past that, its a well made and acted film. By the way, nice meeting you at Black Sabbath! @spatula007

For me A Tale of Two Sisters is an absolute masterpiece.

    You can't beat Asian horror.

Old school gore like the Guinea Pig series are crazy too if you like that kind of thing!

The first one was amazing but a lot of that opinion comes from watching it as a kid when stuff like that was so scary because it seemed possible.

Saw the new one and I really liked it! It was all over the place and pretty confusing and mostly really corny but the fan service for long time fans was pretty epic. A very appropriate send off for the series in my opinion.

Guess this suffered some of the same stuff as the first, it was hampered by rewrites and editing, and production delays. Glad to hear you liked it. I just gotta find time to sit down and give it my full attention.

I just caught the first two episodes. I was on the fence after the first one. I kind of liked i but it felt like every other exorcism storyline. The second episode though damn that was entertaining. The bathroom scene and the ending were nuts. Loved how it is painting a picture of the world as a whole instead of just one possessed kid. All the episodes are on FOX ON DEMAND if anyone else in interested.

Also it's a -microsoft free movie weekend- so you can go watch Final Girls for free right now on pretty much any device. Kind of a horror/comedy blend, pretty fun for sure.

Free weekend say you? Interesting. Very interesting.

Is it just The Final Girls that's free?

Yeah just that one. They pick a single movie and make it available free to everyone for the weekend. I am not sure how often they do it but I caught a few films that way this year. The selection is pretty hit or miss.
