One of the top comments complaining about the male gaze is getting a lot of hate. I know the hobby's male dominated but were we always this incely? One of the sofubi discords I've been lurking on seems pretty bad. A lot of tongue in cheek sexism, racism, anti-semitism for the sake of being "edgy." I guess this isn't a surprise considering the header nonsense you went through recently.

For all the shit these boards get, it's always been a nice junction between geeks with dolls and punk anti-racism/sexism. Some bozos show up here and there but they pretty quickly get the friendly SB shout down.

 

I don't understand how you call that a "toy." It's resin, and it has no moving parts, and there's nothing toy-like about it.

 

I feel like the internet has an effect very similar to road rage. When you cannot see the other person and they can't see you, it results in exaggerated responses. You get people tossing around death threats and calling each other all manner of vile things over the most minor of disagreements.

I mean, even the fact that you're calling these people incels is- to me- a very exaggerated response. I don't want this weird sex toy looking apple, but I'm not gonna claim that anyone who does is on par with some of the most vile would be rapists, misogynists, and racists on the internet.

 

Female genitalia on one side, a foreboding symbol on the other... I understand the apparent Disney association due to the font selection in the promotional graphic, but the title "Forbidden Fruit" coupled with the "art" in question reeks of bullshit Biblical views on women and Eve as a temptress to me. Granted, I know not everyone who considers themselves a Christian thinks this way or makes that interpretation, but it doesn't negate the fact that there are those who do and this definitely feels like a nod to that line of thinking.

 

What other identity could I possibly claim if I am not in a constant state of othering? I guess the best place to stand, is warm and snug in the middle.

Hmmm, I would beg to differ. A lot of toys don't have moving parts and are made of plastic. First things I thought of were those little green soldiers and other figurines. I definitely enjoyed playing with little toys of animals that had no functionality at all beyond being used in play or collecting.

Also, resin joints suuuuck to make. I struggled and still didn't get them right. The stupid joints shrunk!

 

Ok, point taken, my first favorite toys were plastic dinos. But those were fun and there was a way you could play with them.
