Although I sorta like the copter cat, I can smell the smoky aroma coming off the other one. Sort of like a fire made from cow chips.

Sorta is the optimum word. It's sorta cute but only due to the inherent cuteness of the original character.
The whiskers and copter blade are larfily attached, and the mouth just doesn't look right.
The other one, a Bearbrick fail.
For a fan's tribute effort, not trying to sell the thing, ok. For a commercial effort, fail.

I think what was cool about sofubi was it's simplicity and sincerity. Delight, amaze, amuse...definitely not confuse, use offensive gimmicks the toy makers would never stand behind if you got to know them-- or just feel like a grubby money-making status chasing thing. THere was definitely a punk or rebellious nature to some of the toys, but it always seemed to be an honest reflection of the toymaker (I'm thinking of Secret Base/Balzac, MVH type things). Now it just feels like a stupid trendy rip with a lot of new stuff I see. Folks with no sense of originality trying to be loud and mysterious, and outdo the wtf-factor of the last guy. A lot of exhausted motifs here.

Uh, anyway. I love to hate this stuff. This thread has definitely challenged me to understand why I think some things work and some things really don't. hopefully something good will come of it.

There completely is, and as much as I despise and am loathe to link to any sort of listicle or slideshow (especially one generating ad revenue for Gizmodo):

    ;)

    YMMV though.

    This one really got me:

I never was able to see the appeal of these, they look like burnt turds or rotting peanuts.

so about 1/2 those toys could've been kinda cute. Too bad that personal vision knows no bounds.

Does anyone else feel like that Black Monster toy is some kind of bastardization of a Kumon?

Yes, it certainly is. Just like in the early days of this fugly trend, lots of them were copying MVH stuff.

What an expensive piece of unoriginal shit.

But it has a hash pipe ... that means it's cool, right? .... right?

To be fair it also shows what appears to be the Alien Space Bong and Galactic Herbalizer Add-on Paks. Extra value!

Ha, I wouldn't say no to any of that. But they can keep the toy.

Speaking of which, I didn't realise Bristol has a bong shop now, pretty amazing what they're doing with weed paraphernalia nowadays.

That's an entirely other sales subsection on Instragram, from what I've gathered. Pieces selling for over US10G and over, crazy intricate borosilicate glass stuff aka 'art glass'. All of that began ~30 years ago in a hippie bus parked in the side yard of the progenitor of 'color-changing' pipes aka art glass pipes, Bob Snodgrass aka Snoddy, in Springfield, OR, just over the border from Eugene, OR.

There's also what's called 'scientific glass', primarily dab rigs. More formulaic and production-y, not so 'arty', often with ugly branded logos. Tricky work, though, scientific glass, lots of difficult angles and seals to work.
Toro was the best some years ago; most of what's available rips off Toro's but cannot match the quality of angle and seals.

I started to be interested by all those incredible glassware recently.
I cant handle smoking anymore (feels like I am burning my throat) which is terrible and all but thanks to this, I can stay away from that new up and coming money pit.

Then you definitely should not go into Big Al's on Telegraph. He used to carry Toro's stuff; in and out the day it'd arrive. Frat boyz. ; )
A few others within a couple of blocks of Al's, too.

Telling this nerd not to go some place he can see fun toys close to home... you sir are dangerous.

When I was at down South for dcon last year, I stopped at that crazy place on Newport Beach. The one with a Simpson bus you can smoke out of. I was drooling. Going there after dcon, I didn't start a new collection.

Hard to explain to Mom and Dad though, or mebbe that's the point. Too old to smoke, it hurts a lot. Edibles and teas sound good, if Minnesota would just take the finger out and fully legalize... I'm just waiting for some hipster with a marketing major to tell us that all the cool kids eat their treats with a Genuine Gummie Spoon®
