So I see threads here going back to 2005 talking about rainy day editions. Who were the first makers and retailers to do this? Secret Base and Super7? And has every retailer always stuck firmly to selling them only on rainy days?

    Pic unrelated.

I had been hearing about it for years without actually getting one. Now I have 2, both Secret Base, one fighter and the skullwing..I don't know of other makers or time frames. Love the blue though, so will follow along.

I have 5 SB (Damaged Brain, Skullwing, Pus pirate, Balzac Bagman and a Bee) and 1 S7 (Ghostfighter). The Pushead and Balzac may have come from their respective shops. l do remember SB sticking to the rainy day policy, but all that was some time ago.

Does rainy day refer to the color (and selling them on a rainy day)?

Very nice! I believe I might be more than a small bit jealous. Fortunately I am easily distracted...

I remember back in 05/06 S7 sticking to the rainy day policy. I recall checking the weather then calling the shop to see if they had any rainy day ghostfighter for sale.

Just finished a Christopher Moore book which has a major character called "The Rain Dragon" - one of the 5 elemental Chinese Dragons. Anybody down to do a sculpt (in blue transparent of course) of that?

oh. Will go look on devilsheadquarters then. Was it for rainy days? I just looked, noticed it when I was there once before because it was not traditional black, nor rainy day blue. Very groovy sculpt and character! Are you thinking of a rainy day release?

Back in the olden days, Marmit produced unpainted clear blue versions of many Vinyl Paradise figures. From what I heard, they were distributed as dealer incentives or something similar.

While the Marmit ones were not made as 'rainy day' figures, there was some precedent for special edition clear blue figures prior to Secret Base, etc. Sometimes I wonder whether they are both based on something else in Japanese culture, or whether SB was even aware of the Marmit clear blue figures at the time.

    Thanks for the info, everyone.

I forgot about those Vinyl Paradise figures, there were a lot of them. I can ask around what the deal was with them.

From Jim C. at Club Daikaiju: "The Vinyl Paradise blue variants were sold at shows like Wonder Fest and Super Fest direct from Marmit. They were either lucky bag type items, or direct sales, I don't recall which exactly. They did make clear blue Toho kaiju minis which were sold as a set, that I do remember."

I think this was where my 'dealer incentive' information came from, although by the end of thread, it seems to confirm that they are event exclusives:

    http://www.skullbrain.org/bb/index.php?threads/marmit-vinyl-paradise.5571

The older sculpts in clear blue seem to show up most often loose, and I don't know if I have ever seen one in a header/bag myself. So I do wonder if there was some truth to the dealer incentive story, perhaps very early on.

I’ve only ever seen them loose with the exception of my VP Guiron (which I believe was an event exclusive). It came with a super rad header, I’ll post a pic if anyone cares

So, did Secret Base start the “ rainy day “ trend then? It doesn’t seem like a dealer incentive color-way when it came to fight figures.

I think, probably. I just thought there was an interesting parallel with Marmit releasing special unpainted clear blue versions of their figures prior to SB/S7.

I agree. I was just curious if anyone found any evidence/history , like what was found with the dealer incentive. I agree with the previous statement that the rainy day release must be tied in with something in Japanese culture that we just don’t know about or understand. Maybe it previously had nothing to do with toys at all?

Kinda like when it rains in Tokyo and a bunch of ¥500 plastic umbrellas simultaneously appear for sale by the door of EVERY convenience store.

I believe that was just a Pushead whim, with neither been sold on days relevant to the weather.
