Minus points for that Mickey Mouse palm facing upwards instead of downwards on the blue one. Tsk, tsk.

I guess even the masters know when too much is too much

I love seeing all the kaijutan stuff that sits on ebay, knowing they paid a fortune for it and now no one will touch the stuff.

Haha wow so much going on here. I do have to admit I like the idea of a humpty dumpty figure if it wasn’t painted like an old man sweating from constipation

Wouldn't the wall have Humpty Dumpty's name on it after he died from that fall?

    Humpty Dumpty with a twist.

"You think it is an old man sweating from constipation? Look again, it's actually a chicken blob thing dying from it!"

This sculpt really does it for me in terms of fugly.
Here with a new paint and new face.

Still of the opinion that If that first toy would have released in 2007 it would have crushed everyone’s nuts.

I’m not gonna front, I don’t hate that Black Monster figure, nor its first rendition. I can agree with its place here, and I wouldn’t *buy* one, but if the artist was like “Have this” I’d accept.

Those new contenders, though…the kind of stuff that makes you wish The Purge could happen with toy molds.

I feel like an essential criteria toy makers should be asking themselves is, "Can you see a child playing with this toy?" Even for some of the most modern artists (like people we have here) I would argue the answer is Yes [and fairly certain I have seen a fair number of photos/videos proving this out]. Yes, it might not always be the intended market, but at it's heart, this idea fundamentally captures what is executed well versus not, in my opinion. With the content of this thread though, I think the answer to that is obvious. And if it is No, then you really are missing the mark and should reconsider how you are framing/executing your art.

@ultrakaiju I’m not very well versed at all linguistically, so I appreciate when you and others of similar verbal/typing ilk can come in and translate what I’d LIKE to say, but can’t quite articulate. That second toy wielding the club looks like a badly presented board game miniature. The main questions that usually come to mind are “What’s the intent first, purpose second?”

Not particularly 'ugly', not particularly badly done . . . but the concept, the ill-fitting joints, the contrast between detailed head and simplistic body, the pose and the general proportions all just scream 'FUCK NO!'

I think I get what you are saying. I imagine if I saw it at Target I would think it looks really cool. As UltraKaiju says, I could see me playing with it. It checks many boxes for me and yet ... miss the mark. If I was forced to say something I would say it completely lacks 'soul'. I know that doesn't mean anything...I cant find a better way to say it. Feels generic? boring?

As I am writing this I am looking at toys by Groman, Retroband, MVH and Shirahama which I think we would agree check similar boxes as that Black Monster figure. They all seems more alive, more fun. Maybe I just decided to dislike it? Ah! Now I m considering buying one to see if I feel the same having it in hand.

Yep, it looks like its designed by committee to me. Definitely ticks the 'Can't Stop - Won't Stop' category in the fugly bingo. Too digital looking, like a designer toy trying to be sofubi.

Not the worse thing in this thread by a mile, though.

I can wholly agree with all of these points. It’s definitely boring, as far as ‘doing anything’ for me, but it is aesthetically pleasing. This is one of those toys I’d set on a table next to the spot I’d put my keys down every time I come home.

Ha, don't let us talk you into it. I don't love it and wouldn't buy one either. I get what you are saying about it feeling soulless, it is a very static digital design. It simply looked like it's aesthetic came from the mid 2000s to me, but I collect a lot of the mid 2000s stuff over everything releasing today, not putting down the era. I think Moog hit on it, it's like that strange overlap of designer toy and sofubi. It's almost kind of seems like someone took the Kumon and decided to make every element of it into an over the top action figure like sculpt, and then gave it a sword.
