Speaking of childhood comics that i still love today .... Peanuts!

I have probably hundreds of Peanuts books by now, but i still enjoy picking up American published stuff when i see it. I got this one today for 50p, i have a few from this particular series from the mid-70's but i'm pretty sure i don't have this one.

Check the 2000ad store, they have a sale on now, up to 90% off. I've spent way more than I should have on there the last couple of months...

It's in there somewhere . . . but looking at it in this context, archiving from left to right makes my fuckin' eyes itch!

Oh yeah , anyone considering buying 'The Cursed Earth Saga' . . . be sure to buy a post 2016 version that shows the story in its entirety, including the banned #72 and #77 issues. These featured a whole bunch of Corporate mascot parodies (Ronald McDonald, The Jolly Green Giant etc.) and weren't allowed to be republished until relatively recent changes to UK copyright law.

The titan volumes are the best. The best covers, and the best reproduction at original printed size. but damn they made a mess of those spines.

I read somewhere that 2000ad kept an archive of all their published progs on film, but lent it to reprint publishers who in some cases never returned it. So, those titan books are the best reproduction there will ever be.

Unfortunately I only have the 3... good ones though.

The height of the volumes varies quite a bit as well, I have a Strontium Dog that is a fair bit taller. D.R. and Quinch is a bit shorter.

That looks so similar to my shelf, except you have a couple more than me. The comic was printed on toilet paper so the Titan books were always the preferred re-reading option back in the day. No need for colourization either (but unfortunately the few colour sections made b/w were never done that well). And yeah, covers were always a treat too, they really made them stand out. I think a lot of modern 2000ad collections pale in comparison.

I'm going to have to find that uncensored Cursed Earth, I forgot about that release. It will be nice to see those missing chapters in context, I've seen scans online but its not the same.

I recently began hunting for old horror/sci-fi comics again and fear I've spurred a new addiction lol. Here are some recent pickups with some fantastic cover art.

^These were some of my most treasured comics when I was a kid. Had a huge collection of all the horror titles, including the C-grade stuff from Charlton.

Ben, I assume you are reading or at least perusing these... I'm gonna have to make time to message you regarding a certain story I have been trying, casually, to track down for years. I am completely uncertain as to what title it appeared in, which makes it difficult, but it was a very odd one and you would know it when you saw it, for sure.

Sure I'd be happy to help! I do read through all of them but have a hefty stack of new ones to crack open.

Just a warning to anyone ordering comics online. Apparently my local PO is inspecting media mail and enforcing the no comics rule. I currently have two packages waiting for postage due of about $20 total due to ebay sellers sending them media mail and my local PO being disgruntled pricks. I fear one of the orders will be canceled and returned as it came from Oregon and was 7 comics for $16 shipped. Now the sender owes another $12 postage due. :x The seller will actually be losing money on the order now, especially after ebay fees. I'm not sure if this is just a local stickler or if USPS is cracking down for more money. Hoping its the former or comics are about to get more expensive by mail.

I recently bought this new Tom Paterson hardback collection. He's from the school of brilliant UK cartoonists like Leo Baxendale & Ken Reid, a big part of my childhood and yet another reason why i fell in love with comics at an early age. My faves were Whizzer and Chips, Cor!, Krazy, Buster, Whoopee!, Monster Fun and Shiver and Shake.

Fun. Reminds me of Hunt Emerson's stuff. https://largecow.com/

Knockabout's published a lot of his work, too. https://www.knockaboutcomics.com/

Is Grimjack still around? Or Scout? First published a lot of good comics in the 80s; Badger's another.
Truman did a good historical graphic novel, Tecumseh, too.

Which remindes me of the highly recommended Journey, by Bill Messner-Loebs. Fantagraphics or someone else, can't recall exactly whom, published a two-volume compilation, well worth digging up. Period piece, distinctive linework, great storytelling.

Once upon a time, comics were made by hand by people who had talent and craft. They cost a dime. I was PO'd when they went up to 12 cents. Strange but true.

Indeed, except Hunt Emerson was always decidedly 'adult' more often than not. His work often appeared in UK porn mags back in the day. I have a whole bunch of Knockabout books and comics featuring his stuff, he's a bit of a legend. The last thing I bought of his was his adaptation of the 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.

Prices have gone up, and IMO, so has the writing and art quality. There's plenty of crap, but also tons of gold if you know how to look.

Influence/inspiration of US undergrounds, folks like S. Clay Wilson, who passed at the beginning of this year.

The first time I saw S. Clay Wilson stuff was in the self titled 'Knockabout' comix from the UK. Those early collections were a real education. I will also be forever grateful for their close relationship with Gilbert Shelton over the years!

Knockabout are great. Good on them for spreading “filth”. = )

Gilbert’s still ‘here’, and in relatively good health, last I’d heard. That being a couple months ago.

Was turned onto Gary Panter’s latest in another forum here on SB, tho haven’t found the time to track down a copy.

“…a riff on underground comics creators such as Zap's R. Crumb, Victor Moscoso, Robert Williams, and other icons of that era.”
The biggest riffs in what I’ve seen of Crashpad are on Rory Hayes’ stuff.

Indeed. As for the 'gym'... Williamsburg.

    Also, it's shill time again!

For those that don't mind consuming their genius through a screen, comiXology is having a crazy good sale on nearly everything Fanta in the Los Bros canon: Until January 6th, you could pick up all 13 omnis for the same price as one of the collections at retail, twenty bucks, and for just a few dollars more you could treat yourself to the companion book and several of Gilbert's B-movie novellas. If not for yourself, do it for that niece or nephew with progressive parents.

I've skipped about 3,000 reports, so I might as well get back in it a bit and drop one here that I just built for another forum ---

A fine brick from Floating World Comics landed today...

First off, a couple of older releases from m'man Zack's baby, Study Group:

Next, some catch-up with Hollow Press:

Maybe my favorite publisher of pan-artfart readables, their house style perhaps best defined by its diversity of interest and design. From some of the most beautiful abstraction and experimentalism that I've ever seen in comics, to epic comedies to plain ol' excellent storytelling, simply rendered, I don't think that I've ever picked up something from them that wasn't damn interesting on its own terms. Plenty of folks in their decade-plus roster that you might not have encountered before, but they've also been host to work by (now recognized) peeps like Simon Hanselmann, Noah Van Sciver and (elder stateswoman and grand duchess) Julie Doucet.

ANYWAY, they're having a ridiculously generous sale right now - 60% off (nearly) everything in print, shipping on the house once you hit $50 - so even if my clumsy sell up above doesn't have you a little curious, I'd still recommend reading over their catalog a bit... From $2 riso minis to hilarious sex comics to ultra-satisfying bricks, something might strike your fancy, eh?

@nico000, are you with me? @ungawa222? Anyone? Hello?
