I do not see this as a bad thing really - all these idiots had to unite and cumulate to actually be a crowd (a small crowd still) - it actually gives me a little hope for us as a society that we are not as stupid as it often seems.
On the other hand if I look at the recent election results my hope fades quickly... so nevermind :cry:

I am due to start working in the office again in just two weeks. I'm a single parent and my kid was pretty concerned about me, so I stocked up on the Powecom KN95's mentioned in the article. I'm vaccinated, but really want to avoid a breakthrough infection. The building I'm going back to holds 1500 people. Going to miss my private office, bathroom and breakroom (home).

Having worked from home since going freelance over 10 years, Covid has shone a light on our dirty little secret.

Fuck commuting. Fuck office politics. Fuck the crap coffee. Fuck having to be nice to people you wouldn't bother pissing on even if they were on fire.

Guess it’s time to revive this thread up again, thanks to our new friend Omicrom.

I don’t know what’s going on here in Connecticut, but despite having one of (if not the) highest vaccination rates, we’re seeing an uptick of cases lately. Towns are being declared “red zones” again and if I remember this one article correctly, almost 30% of people being hospitalized for COVID are actually fully vaccinated. Seems like the booster might be needed now to avoid a possible hospital stay.
My parents and the rest of my family all got their booster already, my sister and I are scheduled but don’t have it yet.

I got to admit, I’m worried. Not necessarily worried about myself getting COVID, but that it seems to be making somewhat of a resurgence. I was really counting on going back to Ceramics class in late January. If it needs to be canceled, that is going to be one major bummer.

And then there’s this whole Omicrom crap. If the current vaccines and booster aren’t effective against it, well… god, I don’t even want to think about another lockdown.

So what’s everyone else’s thoughts and situations?

In Australia we had 2 Omnicron cases a couple days ago, nows its 5, next will it be a repeat of this fucking year? Hopefully not because our lockdowns are extreme over here (Melbourne being the most locked down city in the world) but who knows at this stage. Fingers crossed for a slight return to normalcy in the face of media frenzy.

I read in today s NYT e-mail that viruses variants tend to become more and more contagious and less and less mortal, as the evolve to thrive. It’s highly possible yet not certain that that is what is happening with Omicron (it seems to have been the case with Delta).
I think we all should get our booster shots regardless of the risks for ourselves for the same reasons we all should get vaccinated in the first place.
I m doubtful that we might see an end to pandemic world. It’s pretty amazing we did not have any for so long living how we did, travelling everywhere all the time. I m more hopeful that we ll learn to adapt to it. Keeping people in there house isn’t sustainable, mentally and physically and we should start to offer better options than the “I believe in the virus and keep myself away from the world” vs “I believe in freedom and will never wear a mask” camps. It’s embarrassing at this point. But then I have watched WAY too much post apocalyptic movies and shows over the last couple of years and I guess that must have clouded my judgement.
That’s all i got in my lil head.

That being said, the editorialist simply writes that all the reasons to not get vaccinated are, in his opinion, bs. And he is furious at the people not getting the vaccine.
    That is all.

The article came through for me. It was an interesting read but not essential. It had me reflecting on the ups and downs of the past 20+ months.

Earlier in the week I had a conversation with a longtime friend that really bummed me out, we were talking about vaccines and immunity and he kept insisting that the results of medical studies were opinions, not tools to establish facts. It was like we were speaking two different languages despite knowing each other for 35 years. Then a couple of days ago, I had what was a relationship-ending conversation with another close friend who is also my dental hygienist. She flipped out on me when I asked her if she was vaccinated for my upcoming appointment.

Maybe I'm finally at the acceptance stage because as frustrating as it is, I can't stay angry at these people. I know there's no point to bargaining any more, and depression feels like it's in the rear view mirror (famous last words). It doesn't feel great, though, thinking about potentially doing fun things in the future like conventions and traveling to see friends, but not knowing what the world is going to be like six months from now.

Liked it so much, I got it twice. No kidding. Had all my vax now (weren't available at first) and a booster. Really can't see how people can say the earth is flat and a disease is a plot.

Look at the cult following a 2000 year old fairy story, written by a man with no evidence of existence, has? . . . Not a huge leap to believing everything on the internet is true!

    I feel you.
Some of my closest friends aren’t vaccinated. We had to agree not to talk about covid early on. Obviously it does resurface now and then, and we’re all relatively good at deflecting or straight on changing subjects. We re still in connection and I’m happy about that. And having people to hang out with where we just don’t speak about this feels actually pretty great.
On the other hands, anyone I am not closed too who wrote on their social media page stupid bs on the matter, or any kind of conspiracies for that matter, I had to unfriend or block. I am not great at feeling righteous anger and engaging into crusades online to right the wrongs of people thinking. I guess I know it’s pointless but and mostly, I just don’t care enough.

to your later point, I really wish our elected officials would start planning a future with plagues being a thing. We can’t live like this. We need some sort of agreement and plan. Since a year at least we need this.
I’m in the mental health industry and we are all past the point of burnout now. Ain’t great for our clients/patients. I know it to be the case for most of doctors and nurses I know too, either here in the us or back in Belgium and France. Earlier this week an hospital in Belgium closed its ER unit for a few days, saying in an official statement they weren’t happy about that decision but needed to do so because their entire staffs was past burnout point and they needed to regroup. The health minister response was to menace them. Fuck him. Fuck those insane pathetic irresponsible blind fuckers.

@Anti Social Andy, that's something I've been thinking about for the last few years. That if you if you instill a supernatural worldview in someone while they're still a child, that, in some cases, it makes it difficult for an understanding of the natural world and the scientific method (the means by which we learn about that natural world) to take hold.

I'm not saying that all people of faith are incapable of reason. That is definitely not the case, and there are many that obviously are. However, the disturbing trends I've been seeing in this country since 9/11 seem to be much more pronounced among religious lines.

@nico000, I have to work on that "changing subjects" tactic with my friends. Another longtime friend emailed me a stupid joke about a Dr. Fauci doll that lies when you pull the string on it. I don't have any room in my life for that kind of negativity. (I create plenty of my own negativity, thank you very much. ;p)

Regarding social media, a few months ago I did a search on posts my my friends on Facebook for words like "vaccine," "covid," "election," etc. and found a handful of people who were saying stupid things. I did pretty much what you did, made the decision to block or unfriend each one, and then figure out if anyone said something so sever that they would be "unfriended" in real life.

I totally agree regarding our national and international health infrastructure. We need to completely rethink how we're doing things because this crisis has broken so many people and things.

It’s an interesting idea, that religious folks ‘believes in supernatural worldview’ or that faith is in obvious contradiction to seeing the natural world and trusting the scientific method.
It obviously has infected religions themselves. The way they tried to fight back science, on science very own terrain, -I think- impoverished everything and got churches empty.

Btw, that is the same argument that was made against any non Christian population during the colonisations: that they -the others- stupidly or dangerously believed in things that made no sense and were ridiculous or ‘evil’. You guys are making the same ol’ claim. I would respectfully recommend against it.

It’s been a long time since and anyone studying religion, faith or believe would tell you that believing in science, that the world is intelligible at all, stems from the same faith as religions.

More to the point, that religions and science are operating on different domains of knowledge. The ways of knowing in science aren’t the same as the ones we use in spirituality. So it’s totally meaningless to try and judge one with the tools of the other. Like saying that people playing football are insane cause all you know is basketball. Same same.

That being said, obviously, religious folks do the same and when they do it, it sounds as embarrassing on the other side. Some religions thankfully are much clearer on this issue and never fell into that trap Christians fell into. They say: you first know according to your senses, then inferences, then description, then absence (zero) and everything that is unknowable through those means of knowledge are only knowable if they are revealed to you. By adding revelation as a mean of knowing we are clearer. (And obviously, those means of knowledge are to be used in that order and therefore revelation can’t fuck with science more than science can fuck with religion, they aren’t about the same thing and once somethin is knowable through scientific means religions back off instead of fighting as if … I don’t know). Added bonus is how to discriminate between believes: unbelievable believes are all that are in contradiction to anything knowable. Believable beliefs are then themselves separated into two categories: useful and not useful. Not useful are considered bullshit and therefore not recommended to be entertained. That’s just one way of saying it, you can read or listen to people way more articulate than me on this if you recognize the need to make peace with religions (or science).

I’m doing here what I’m trying not to do anywhere online. You guys keep thinking religion is silly if that’s your preference.

I don't think it's your intention, but this sounds a little like the "bOtH SiDeS" rhetoric that has become so widespread over the last 5ish years. Putting science and religion on equal footing is a bit too close to putting democrats and republicans on equal footing. They are not same same. Science evolves and changes as new information is gained. Religion is a social control masquerading as ethics. That said, I know plenty of wonderful people who are religious. And plenty of assholes who are not (myself!).

However, I think language matters and we need to reconsider calling people - or allowing them to call themselves - religious, when they clearly don't even attempt to abide by the tenets of the religion they claim. Which, to circle back to the idea of religion being the root of anti-science, makes me want to say that it has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with education and politics. Boiled down, Republicans have spent decades destroying educational systems, and turning education/intellect into dirty words, while claiming a near strangle-hold on "Christianity" and perverting it into an anti-Christ cult. And I don't mean anti-Christ in the sense of Satan, but in the literal sense of being against Christ.

If these people were truly religious, truly CHRISTIAN, they would be amazing people and the world would be an immensely better place. The US might actually be the greatest nation in the history of mankind like it pretends to be. But, here we are.

I understand why many people who were raised with religion turn to that and away from science in times like this. A religious worldview is designed to provide comfort in a time when existential threats are looming.

However, if people use that worldview as an excuse to eschew the benefits of modern medical science, or leverage their religious platforms to spread disinformation, then those people are on the wrong side of history.

My second shot sucked too, I was very surprised I escaped without side effects this time. But hey, at least we’re better protected!

Moderna booster wiped my wife and I out for 2-3 days after zero issues with the first two.

Hoping that means we got a good immune response.

I got the booster last Thursday (Pfizer all 3 shots) and felt sick for 24 hours, headache, mild temperature, no capacity to concentrate, all that.

(I'll leave the religion debate, anyway out of topic).
