    i guess steiff is luxury

made of things good and fine.
it looks to be crafted to very high standards and it might even come with a lifetime repair policy.
    i would of liked one.

shelterbank also makes some well crafted plush-vinyl with wire armature for pose ability

Steiff are one of those companies that have been around forever and are known for being expensive. Their teddies are talked about in a reverential tone on TV shows like The Antiques Roadshow.

I had no idea they had such presence in Japan!

Reminds me of the Billiken x Masataro version released back in 2015 which cost 46,000 yen.

Agreed and I think the Masataro version has the edge - his craftsmanship is lovely.

M-World sent out a mail ref the Steiff version and with their fees it was 56,500 Yen before postage and import taxes.

Should be arriving soon. I don’t expect it yo be as nice as Masataro —but I’m hoping I’m wrong. I do like Masataro’s offering more as far as looks go. Better proportions, and Masataro had made the eyes with shaved resin; Steiff looks like a patch or something.

Masataro used weighted balls in the body to give it a nice feel and weight. Not sure about whether or not that’s a standard practice with high-end plush toys.

I’ll post pics when it gets here

Will be interested to hear your take on the Steiff version.

Given the amount of Godzillas that were on eBay, at a lower price, I didn't bother buying via MWorld but thought I'd wait and see what the end product was like and then take my chance buying from eBay.

I hope it turns up for a good price for you. They made 1966 of them so i wonder if they made too many? Not sure how the overlap of booska fans and steiff collectors play here. I almost didn’t bother because it wasn’t made in Japan—but i thought about Japan’s long history with Germany and gave it a weird pass. With so many similarities to the Masataro version, i wondered if Masataro studied in Germany or with Steiff.

Hoping to see it in September.

So I received the Steiff Booska the other day and although i was very happy with the make and materials, mine had an issue that I’ve been seeing with other new arrivals on social media…

the teeth don’t sit right. I mean, they really don’t.
Now, a lot of people seem to be happy with it anyway. I was planning on selling it prior to its arrival as i think Masataro’s offering is a lot better looking, and made some better material choices with the eyes and teeth being resin (the eyes are shaved resin—and I don’t know what tha eff that even is, but when the light hits them just right, there’s this depth to them and it’s dreamy)—oh, and it’s made in Japan (which is kind of my jam).

I slept on it, and decided i might want to keep it anyway—i mean, i do like it. I like that it can stand on its own, and i like the shapes and quirky vibe of it. I found an authorized Steiff restorationist that , if available, could possibly set things (teefahs) right. Until then, he’ll stay safe in his box.

The Masataro gets a 9.5/10 from me. A perfect 10 would be given if it could stand on its own as as well as sit. But it came with a stand and totally kicks ass. I’d buy another if i could…shit, maybe one day i will!

Steiff gets 7/10. Legs are not articulated, so no sitting, but it stands. The teefs were a glaring oversight on their part…and that’s why it’s not an 8 or higher. The make and feel is great. But thos teeth. Somebody in production saw that holy-hell-bucked-toothedness and nodded with a sense of satisfaction and pride in the work—…having a hard time picturing it?…how about them laughing in dark sunglasses, tossing it in the box like they were at the 3pt line and counting that paper!! Making it rain on you nerds! Maybe not the case, but easier to picture. And speaking of pictures…

“Eeeerrrrr! Isth me! Boouutkah! Help me, friend

…I’m still a little miffed about that. I’ll be alright.

Wish me luck on the repair! I’ll keep you posted!

update: The restorationist will kindly take my request. They plan on assessing it and going over some options for correction with me. If I’m game, then they’ll fix it. If the methods seem a but too invasive, i could always send it to Steiff for an exchange possibly. They included a card for quality control complaint. We’ll see.

So! The restorationist was able to correct the problem. Not bad considering how screwed it was before. And it feels as good as the rest of the doll. I can actually enjoy it for what it is. Many thanks to “Dr. E” who is a certified Steiff Restorationist.

But what it is not (in my opinion) as great as the Masataro offering. If you dig stuff that goes for the unpretentious charmingly flawed vibe, then maybe the Steiff Booska is for you. There’s definitely something I like about it, but it is way overpriced for what I got.

the Masataro Booska cost me about the same (a little more), but when I got it, I was very impressed and would buy it again if anything ever happened to it. It felt and looked the part. I even got the Chamegon when it was released and was just blown away once again.

Steiff is fine. Looks a bit scruffy and I would never tell anyone what I paid for it because they wouldn’t believe me—especially after handling the Masataro version. For a company boasting over 100 years of quality craftsmanship, i was not impressed. At 250, I would’ve been much happier with it, but still not impressed or anything. I just like Booska stuff.

Yup. So it’s made with nice materials, feels pretty solid at the seams and such. But with its initial flaws, and embroidered eyes and felt teeth instead of other design approaches, I can’t sing its praises. It’s not horrible.
