Nothing new, just rebranded. I still laugh at the Christian movement to ban D&D because it was going to teach the kids how to do witchcraft (Shhh, quite Beelzebub, I'm typing.). Cancel rock and roll, jazz, punk, movies like The Passion of Christ, the ouiji board .... always something.

What we need is "educate culture", or "communicate culture". Canceling won't make people less stupid.

The issue I have with cancel culture is that it, like so many other things these days, are operating in absolutes. "If this then that" is not actually how the world works, it is way more nuanced. Cancel culture is a lazy way of dealing with uncomfortable issues. As opposed to looking at facts and using critical thinking to make decisions.

Whether the people doing it feel justified or not, its an extreme form of mob mentality. Its bullying.

To your first point - exactly. Cancel Culture was started by Neo-Christians.

Over the past decade, as the actions of corporations and those who lead them have been reported on more widely, consumers have been able to better link their spending habits to behaviors they agree or disagree with. So now we have people changing their spending habits (or at least saying they will) based on corporate behavior. Only now that it's going "both ways" did the Neo-Christians need to come up with a name for it, and label it as something those "others" are doing.

Holding people/corporations accountable for their actions isn't "cancel culture" - it's accountability.

Unfortunately, those same Neo-Christians are the same people who pulled the rug out from under education starting in the 60s. I don't believe we'll be able to truly rebuild our educational system until after Neo-Christianity is dismantled. Maybe that'll happen over the next several decades as younger generations are less and less likely to be religious.

A couple months ago there was outrage over Jill Biden going by "Dr." bc she had a doctorate degree. A massive story for the children pretending to be adults...

Dr. Seuss isn't a doctor. He is also vastly underrated and wasn't cancelled. The publisher pulled some of the books because they had outright racist material in them. That isn't a cancel.

There are plenty of people that need to be cancelled but "cancel culture" is a term that many terrible people are using as some form of excuse for the terrible things they do. They'll scream "i'm being cancelled" while being interviewed on national television. The whole thing is absurd...

Depends on what it is. People should be allowed to learn from their mistakes and grow as people where their reputation isn’t destroyed forever, but there comes a certain point where repeat offenders are subject to criticism and exclusion from social circles.

It also really depends on what your personal values are and how close they are held to your own belief system. Some of it I believe should honestly be taken out of the human experience (racism, homophobia, etc.) but it’s not completely possible to do that, it’s just not possible to take a form of thinking or opinion out of humans. So well, confront them and ask them why they said it and explain why it’s harmful to think/behave that way. If they proceed to act like a putz, get the hell away from them, and if they can cause major harm to yourself and others, let the right people know that can actually do something.

This is coming from someone who’s studied Sociology and is currently a Psychology student. I’m not at all perfect, I’m still learning. But from what I have studied about not only group mentalities and individuals who have things such as egocentric biases about their “world”, there is really only so much we can do with individuals that we deem shit that don’t align with our own moral compass. People totally can change, I’ve seen it, but it can take a life-changing event or personal interest that blows their freakin’ minds.

Now companies/corporations/businesses that have lots of money, you’d think they would want to have accountability solely on the fact they will lose business(though one would hope it would be for acknowledging wrong things they have said/done/promoted) but in all honesty, I have little faith in that until it becomes a major problem for the business, monetarily. It’s hard to change a person’s mind unless you can convince them that it’s important to them or their beliefs to follow suit. Imagine a giant corporation trying to change certain things after it is successful. It’s gross. But I think it’s why people resort to “cancelling;” I don’t necessarily like it, especially with certain individuals, but how else are people going to show their frustrations for something without boycotting or explaining why people are angry when they have no other power?

Like I said, depends on what it is.

Why is lycanthropy on the list? It's not like anyone chooses it, you just happen to get bitten by a werewolf and now you're one of them.

Lycanthopy is a CHOICE. No one is born lycanthopic. If you get bit by a warewolf, the body has ways to prevent it.

Lycanthropy is only a choice if you're kink and ask to be bitten.

I am just glad Flat Earth isn't on the list. I am planning to walk to the edge soon and jump off.
